LOL

Anyways, I saw some pics of the newly-facelifted Sport model...........and imho, it's neutral in terms of design. It's not worse than the pre-facelift model............but it doesn't look like an improvement either.

Front grille is not offensive and the wheels featured at the LA Auto Show seem smaller(?)

The only good things are mostly in the form of new features (e.g. LED headlamps, slightly improved mechanicals, etc.)

That's mostly it.

Always thought the Ford Flex was a much better looking wagon with the same amount of utility.

The Explorer just looks ungainly and badly proportioned from any angle. The new front clip makes matters worse IMO, its too busy.

I was still young and impressionable when Jurassic Park hit the big screen, and that movie forever imprinted the Ford Explorer in my mind. You remember the scene, but I'll describe it anyway: It's dark, raining and there's no power. The off-screen footsteps of a tyrannosaurus send shockwaves through the standing water in a plastic cup and the rain-soaked muddy roads. Seconds later, the toothy end of the movie's biggest predator crushes through the roof of a highligher-green-and-yellow Ford Explorer, causing all manner of mayhem to the SUV's occupants inside.

It's not lost on me that the Ford Explorer used in the movie is, in reality, a dinosaur itself. When the seminal Explorer hit the scene in 1991 it was based on the guts of the Ranger pickup truck, which was no spring chicken itself. Ford's first real foray into the then-burgeoning SUV marketplace was meant to compete against vehicles like the Jeep Cherokee and Chevy Blazer, along with Japanese models such as the Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota 4Runner. In those early days, none of these vehicles were sold based on the merits of their car-like ride and handling or superior fuel economy.

Nowadays, the discerning car shopper wants the looks of an off-road-ready SUV, but the inherent compromises and need for any serious rock-crawling capability faded away years ago. The current Ford Explorer is a prime example of this successful visual hypocrisy, with its SUV-like styling listed as the number-one reason for buying on customer surveys.

SUV-like styling is one thing, SUV-like guts are another. In 2011 the Explorer went from its traditional truck-based chassis to Ford's D4 platform, based loosely on the Taurus and shared with the Flex. As with the rest of the unibody crossover world, that means the current Explorer offers an excellent ride, the higher seating position that buyers want, and a useful third row for growing families. None of that inherent family-car goodness goes away for 2016. With class-leading sales already in the bag, Ford hopes its latest Explorer will attract new buyers due to the availability of a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine and an upper-crust Platinum trim level.

Based on some time sitting inside and inspecting the high-content Platinum model (albeit without a drive in this trim level) I believe Ford's claim that this is most luxurious vehicle ever to wear a Blue Oval. Only not all its ovals inside are blue. For the first time in history, the Ford Explorer Platinum boasts a machined aluminum emblem on its steering wheel. It may not sound like a big deal, but with more than a hundred years of marketing wrapped up into its logo, Ford is cautious to depart from tradition. (Recall that the F-150 Raptor needed Ford Family approval to run without an oval on the grille). The metallic logo looks appropriate in the Platinum, but don't expect the monotone tinge to spread across the lineup anytime soon.

Elsewhere inside the 2016 Explorer Platinum, it's easy to see that Ford engineers sweat the details to shoot for entry-level luxury crossovers like the GMC Acadia Denali and Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit. Leather covers most every surface from the seats to the dash cover to the door panels, which are stitched up in a neat diamond pattern. Such intriguing tidbits abound in the Platinum's cabin, and it does indeed take the Explorer a class above its predecessor.

The Sony sound system in the Explorer Platinum is also impressive. Not only does the system's overall Wattage increase from 390 to 500, but the Japanese electronics giant sent in its very best engineer to fine-tune the Platinum's high-end audio system to mimic the sound of the world's best concert halls. Listening to a pre-selected set of songs with the custom surround settings both on and off, the difference should please audiophiles, if not put your mind's eye inside Lincoln Center.

Besides the top-rung trim level, the other big bit of news for 2016 is the aforementioned EcoBoost engine. The new 2.3 replaces the previous 2.0-liter turbo, which moved the Explorer well enough for the everyday driving many owners put their commuters through. It wasn't powerful enough, though, to push its ponies to all four wheels, or tow a meaningful load, which kept it out of a large swath of buyers' order sheets.

That power deficiency no longer exists in 2016, thanks to a larger 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine with 280 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque – improvements of 40 in both categories. While its block and basic design are shared with the engine in the Ford Mustang, the Explorer's final tuning is specific to the needs of an SUV, with greater mid-range punch and more appropriate throttle mapping that puts the three-row 'ute into the meat of its torque curve early and often. Four-wheel-drive is now offered with the four-cylinder engine, as is a towing package that allows Explorers with the 2.3-liter engine to pull as much as 3,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Driving the new 2.3 EcoBoost back-to-back with the standard 3.5-liter V6, it's unlikely most consumers will notice a difference between the two in normal use. For the record, the EPA rates the 2.3-liter Explorer at 19 miles per gallon in the city and 28 highway with standard front-wheel drive, or 18/26 with all-wheel drive, improvements of as much as four mpg (highway/FWD) over the 3.5-liter V6. As with other such engines, though, I have to wonder if its on-paper fuel economy will live up to real-world use. What's more, the 2.3-liter EcoBoost is a $995 option, and even the non-turbo V6 can tow as much as 5,000 pounds.

The decision to option up to the torquier EcoBoost four or stick with the base V6 likely depends on your individual driving habits. A four-mpg improvement may pay itself off over the course of a few years if you drive enough miles, and if you don't need to tow more than a small camper, trailer, snowmobile, jet ski or similar. In any case, if you do take the 2.3-liter plunge, you won't feel down on power, and that's the whole idea behind downsized, turbo engines such as this.

The top engine in the range is a carryover 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, which, as with the entire Explorer lineup, is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard, and this engine is the lone choice for Sport and Platinum trims. It's rated at 365 hp and 350 lb-ft, and that's more than enough gumption to make the Explorer feel like a hot rod. The penalty, naturally, is economy. Explorer's equipped with the big EcoBoost are EPA rated at just 16 city, 22 highway.

Ford also claims to have made some changes to the Explorer's suspension and steering tuning for 2016, but in the afternoon I spent with the new car I couldn't tell much difference from the last-generation, and I doubt all but the most discerning driver will either. The good news is that the latest Explorer didn't need much updating. The ride and handling compromise was and still is pretty much spot on for a family crossover.

Exterior styling tweaks are few but noticeable to those paying attention, with new grilles standing out as the most immediately visible updates. There's a specific face on Platinum models, and the rest of the line, from the XLT to the Limited and Sport, each get different fascias. The Sport model in particular is noteworthy for its lack of chrome, instead boasting a blacked-out motif that stands out next to the XLT, Limited and Platinum.

Ford says it's added new rock crawling software recognition to its Terrain Management system, but there weren't any rocks available for us to crawl in San Diego, and I'd be surprised if more than a handful of 2016 Explorers ever see actual rocks large enough to crawl over, anyway. Perhaps a curb-crawling setting would be more appropriate? Those who lust over segment-firsts and class-exclusives may also be keen on the front and rear 180-degree cameras, each with its own tiny little washer. Perhaps more interesting is a new self-parking mode that can automagically back the 2016 Explorer into a perpendicular spot between two other cars. I tested this feature and found it worked quite well.

Base 2016 Ford Explorer models start at $31,595 (including $895 for destination). Stepping up to the XLT will cost $34,295, and adding all-wheel drive raises either price by $2,000. These figures represent pretty good value for those looking for a seven-passenger family vehicle but don't want a minivan. Interestingly, Ford tells us that 43 percent of all Explorer buyers choose either the Limited or Sport trim, which both retail for $44,195 with AWD. There goes the value proposition.

That leads us to the new Platinum trim level. At $52,600, this is one expensive Explorer. According to Ford, though, it's losing out on high-dollar sales to the likes of GMC's Acadia line and Jeep's Summit trim, both of which can be pushed into the mid-$50K range, and neither of which come from an established luxury nameplate. And while Ford might find similar success in this high-margin zone, I'd counter that the Limited is a better buy assuming its buyer can keep the options sheet in check.

The midsize crossover/SUV market is more competitive than ever before, and the line between truly capable off-road contenders and mere pavement pretenders is getting blurrier with each passing model year. The Jeep Grand Cherokee may be a more authentic SUV, but it doesn't offer the coveted third row of seats. The GMC Acadia/Chevy Traverse and Honda Pilot are contenders, but none of those drive as well as the Explorer, at least until the upcoming new models debut. The Dodge Durango and Nissan Pathfinder are perhaps the clearest competitors to the Explorer, but the former doesn't have anything to rival the efficient new 2.3-liter EcoBoost or high-zoot Platinum, and the latter offers just one lone V6 that's roughly equivalent to the base engine in the Explorer.

Put another way, Ford has cornered a sweet spot with its Explorer, offering enough SUV-like credibility to lure buyers into the showroom, enough options, creature comforts and smart packaging to keep them there, and enough value to convince them to drive one home. None of that changes for 2016, which means the Explorer is still the best car-like, three-row 'ute on the market.

Agree, this one steps backwards a bit. Biggest problem is with interior space efficiency for its exterior size. Platform mate Taurus also suffers from this.

Looks like it still doesn't have Sync 3 at launch. Not sure if this is able to be upgraded after the fact.

The Sport model looks OK.

Still a step-down from the prior model though.

Big news is the 2.3. Only a matter of time before the NA V6 gets dropped and this will become an EcoBoost only affair

The "new" design almost looks older than the previous generation, IMO.

From people's comments here, it seems Ford may have repeated history with this refresh. Many claimed previous facelifts on the original model were a step backward. Facelifts are hard to pull off when the redesigns are well received.

The refreshed Expedition looks pretty handsome , surprised they couldn't make the Explorer similar

Looks like a Range Rover front was lifted and put on the Explorer. The Explorer should be more reliable ;p

Default 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum

Ford Explorer Goes Platinum; New Model Gives Iconic SUV Ultimate Combination of Comfort, Performance

- Featuring amenities such as an upscale leather-wrapped interior, industry-exclusive 500-watt Sony® Audio System and 3.5-liter EcoBoost® engine, 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum series adds a new chapter to the iconic sport utility's legacy
- Platinum edition combines the performance of the popular Explorer Sport with new levels of comfort and craftsmanship inside, offering customers the most well-appointed Ford SUV yet
- Explorer Platinum will arrive in Ford showrooms in September, aiming to build on the nameplate's success and strengthen its position as the best-selling SUV for the last 25 years in the United States

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 28, 2015 – The vehicle that gave us room to roam reminds us that there is always room to grow and #ExploreMore.

Ford Explorer – the best-selling SUV in the United States for 25 years – reaches new heights with the Platinum edition, a well-appointed combination of the performance-minded Explorer Sport and comfort-designed Limited trim level. Ford Explorer Platinum will hit showrooms in September.

"For 25 years, Explorer has shaped what people expect from an SUV," said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president and chief technical officer, Global Product Development. "With this new Explorer Platinum, we're raising expectations."

The new Explorer Platinum further elevates the three-row SUV in look and feel, with standard upgrades both inside and out. New multi-adjustable front seats wrapped in Nirvana leather with micro-perforation, industry-first 500-watt premium Sony® Audio System, smart driver-assist technologies and powerful 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 engine advance Explorer in ways customers can see and feel.

"Platinum is the ultimate expression of refinement," said Mike Arbaugh, Ford Explorer chief designer. "This is the most upscale, high-quality interior we've ever offered on a Ford vehicle in North America."

Unbelievable comfort in an 'unstoppable' SUV
The interior employs the finest materials, including real aluminum and real ash wood multi-piece appliqués on door panels and instrument panel. A wood and leather-wrapped heated steering wheel showcases unique stitching that matches the stitching used throughout the interior.

Interior color options include Soft Ceramic or a new Ebony with Anthracite headliner combination. Nirvana leather wraps the instrument panel, console armrests, quilted door bolsters and upper door trim. The instrument cluster features a large 10-inch digital display supported with analog displays – a first for a Ford-brand vehicle.

For the first time in a Ford production vehicle, a brushed-aluminum Ford oval is centered on the steering wheel. Even the A-pillars are fabric-wrapped; every detail has been considered for the Platinum customer.

The new Explorer Platinum is the first Ford vehicle to get all-new 500-watt Sony Audio with Live Acoustics™ and Clear Phase™ technology. Live Acoustics re-creates the sound dynamics of some of the world's greatest concert halls for more enveloping, more realistic sound. Clear Phase technology eliminates sound dispersion throughout the vehicle, so the music passengers hear is precisely pinpointed – just as the artist intended.

Explorer Platinum also gets standard smart technology features including enhanced active park assist, lane-keeping system and rain-sensing wipers. Along with popular parallel park assist, enhanced active park assist can now help drivers back the vehicle into a perpendicular spot.

For the exterior, signature lighting surrounds LED headlamps – giving the vehicle a continuous glow. Other features include a standard dual-panel moonroof, premium silver-painted front and rear skid plate elements, and 20-inch wheels with bright machined face and tarnished dark painted pockets.

"The Explorer name has long been synonymous with off-road capability," said Craig Patterson, Ford utilities marketing manager. "Explorer Platinum continues that reputation and adds so much more."

Building on the Explorer legacy
Since the 2016 Ford Explorer reached showrooms earlier this year, robust sales indicate the nameplate remains one of the strongest in the SUV segment. Through June 2015, sales of Explorer base, XLT, Limited and Sport models were at 20,377 units – a 30 percent year-over-year increase.

Platinum arrives hoping to build upon those numbers and continue Explorer's 25-year run as America's best-selling SUV. Introduced in 1990 as a 1991 model, Explorer featured generous interior space customers were looking for, and was engineered specifically for people seeking adventure for their families and a way to express their individuality.

Ford Explorer is sold in markets across the globe – built in North America at Chicago Assembly Plant, as well as in Venezuela and Russia. Ford exported more than 56,000 Explorers from the United States last year, and plans to export even more in 2015.

"Customers love Explorer, and they expect it to continue to lead the way in innovation, performance and fun," said Arie Groeneveld, chief engineer for the new Explorer. "That's the challenge we embraced when we set out to build the best SUV in the world."

More innovation equals great performance, more fun
For the 2016 model year, Explorer customers enjoy driver-assist innovations that have long made the vehicle an off-road favorite. The 2016 Explorer offers more drive-enhancing smart technology than previous models, including:

- Front and rear cameras with washers: Both have wide-angle lenses and come equipped with a washer – a class-exclusive, segment-first feature
- Enhanced active park assist with perpendicular park assist, park-out assist and semi-automatic parallel parking: The system uses ultrasonic sensors and electric power-assisted steering to help drivers with parallel parking and perpendicular parking maneuvers. Enhanced active park assist includes park-out assist to help a driver pull out of parallel parking spots. The system controls the steering wheel, while the driver operates the accelerator and brake pedals, and shifts the vehicle into gear
- Smart-charging USB ports: Located in the front and rear of the vehicle are USB ports able to charge smart devices up to two times faster than conventional ports
- Hands-free liftgate: A customer need only kick his or her foot below the center of the rear bumper to open or close the liftgate
- Industry-exclusive 500-watt Sony Audio System
- Active Grille Shutters: Upper and lower fascia openings close at highway speeds to reduce drag. At low speeds, the shutters open to deliver airflow to cool the powertrain
- Air curtains: Standard air curtains create a high-pressure region of air that impacts the outer surface of the wheels and tires. The result is airflow held close to the vehicle body, minimizing drag

Delivering EcoBoost performance
Explorer Platinum and Explorer Sport are equipped with a standard 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 that produces 365 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 350 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,500 rpm. All Explorer engines are mated with a six-speed SelectShift® Automatic transmission.

Base, XLT and Limited models are equipped with a standard 3.5-liter V6, and drivers can upgrade to the available 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that produces 280 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 310 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,000 rpm.

The 2.3-liter EcoBoost has a notable improvement in horsepower and torque over the outgoing 2.0-liter. The front-wheel-drive Explorer retains its EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 28 mpg on the highway, which is best-in-class. For the first time, customers choosing a four-cylinder Explorer can also opt for four-wheel drive and trailer towing capability.

"The new Explorer isn't giving up its reputation as a leader in highway fuel efficiency, which is especially key for customers who want a vehicle that is also a capable trail warrior," said Groeneveld.

Intelligent four-wheel drive: Ready for any adventure
Explorer Platinum comes standard with the intelligent four-wheel-drive with Terrain Management System™ that reassesses conditions about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye – providing precise handling and traction.

Intelligent four-wheel drive continuously monitors wheel speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle to determine vehicle conditions and driver intent. The system then determines the optimal amount of front and rear torque for the given conditions to prevent slip from even occurring, which helps keep the vehicle sure-footed on virtually any terrain. In sand, grass or gravel mode, the antilock braking system changes its pulse rate, which allows material to build up in front of the wheels – acting as a doorstop of sorts to help slow momentum.

To help maintain efficiency, in most steady-state cruising conditions the new Explorer equipped with intelligent four-wheel drive seamlessly and quickly transfers torque between the front and rear wheels.

A newly refined, intelligent four-wheel-drive gauge display shows power being distributed to front and rear wheels under all conditions – from heavy four-wheel-drive usage to when the system is not transmitting power at all.

For added convenience, the Terrain Management System automatically defaults to normal mode whenever the vehicle is started to ensure it's ready for normal driving conditions.

Using a dial located on the center console, the customer can shift on the fly, selecting from four terrain management modes – normal, snow, sand or mud – to set how the engine, transmission, brakes and four-wheel-drive system will operate. A fifth setting helps navigate steep terrain.

Ford and Sony Introduce Premium Home Audio Technology on 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum

- Ford Explorer Platinum series introduces an industry-first audio experience with a 500-watt Sony® Audio System
- System includes two industry-first features previously offered only in high-end home audio systems – Live Acoustics™ and Clear Phase™ technologies
- Algorithm in Explorer Platinum audio system tuned to authentically reproduce the sound quality and signature ambience of concert halls in Amsterdam, Berlin and Vienna

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 28, 2015 – Because every great adventure is made perfect by the ideal soundtrack, the new 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum edition features an exclusive Sony® Audio System with two industry-first technologies – Live Acoustics™ and Clear Phase™.

As a standard feature on Platinum edition Ford Explorer, the audio system represents the first time high-end Sony home audio technology has been used in a vehicle. Live Acoustics and Clear Phase technologies bring realistic concert-quality sound to the new Explorer Platinum.

"Explorer is about pushing boundaries, and authentic high-end home theater sound isn't just for the living room anymore," said Craig Patterson, Ford utilities marketing manager. "The new Platinum series gives customers everything – including a sound system that will knock your socks off."

To develop the proprietary Live Acoustics algorithm, Sony engineers, led by Goro Shiraishi, also a concertmaster with the Sony Philharmonic Orchestra, visited great halls in Amsterdam, Berlin and Vienna, and installed microphones to measure their precise acoustic qualities. Shiraishi-san wanted to re-create the concert hall experience for Sony's high-end home audio products.

Sony engineers spent more than 100 hours tuning the audio system in the new Explorer, intent on providing Platinum driver and passengers with the finest audio experience on the road. At the core of the system are 12 high-power speakers in 10 carefully selected locations, plus an all-new Class D amplifier to deliver a loss-less power source that drives speaker output without straining.

Combined, the 12 speakers are capable of a maximum 500 watts. The speakers are optimized for sensitivity, including the center and surround speakers, a subwoofer with an 8-inch driver and a 12-liter enclosure for tight and full base tones, and door woofers and chrome tweeters with translucent grilles to preserve sound integrity and complement the upscale Platinum interior.

Even the system's speaker coils are unique – square coils instead of the more traditional round ones – resulting in greater efficiency and heat dispersion.

"This technology was previously available only in our high-end home audio systems," Shiraishi-san said. "We've now applied the algorithm of Live Acoustics to Ford Explorer Platinum's audio system to transform the listening experience to be among the finest in the world."

Every sound in its place: Clear Phase
When music is recorded, is live or in a studio, the best sound engineers always take care to establish a full sound stage. In other words, they make sure each instrument occupies specific areas in the "space" in front of the listener.

In the context of a vehicle, imagine occupants are listening to a live concert with instruments strategically placed in distinctive and acoustically correct zones on the vehicle's dashboard.

Clear Phase technology optimizes the sound stage inside Explorer Platinum to make the music sound as though it's coming from a stage larger than the vehicle itself. Every instrument is located in its proper place, and vocals are clarified instead of lost behind distorted sound.

The technology also eliminates sound dispersion, which allows music to be properly focused in specific areas of the sound stage. By flattening amplitude and correcting phase characteristics to attain linearity, music will open up for a crystal-clear listening experience.
