Lightbulb Digital Dashboard/Telematics Debuts at SEMA for 2015 Launch

For the past ten years, as new cars have adopted digital technologies, we've seen an explosion of instrumentation and entertainment features brought to the automobile. Ford was one of the leaders in developing an on-board infotainment system, and this year Chrysler/Fiat upped the ante with the introduction of a laundry list of custom features. Now, several automakers are looking into aftermarket "digital dashboard", introduced at SEMA this year by Infinite Skyz, and this week announced its first major customer, appearing as an option for the Elio Motors' autocycle that goes into production next year.

Incorporating a number of screens that display conventional dashboard instruments, the "SkyzMatic" will incorporate an entire telematics package, including Internet access, a forward and rear-view video display, GPS, tracking and logging software, VOIP phone, internet radio, remote start, locking, and monitoring with memory, Bluetooth and a WiFi hotspot. Your iPhone links directly with the SkyzMatic system to become your remote, your alarm, even your concierge system.

Infinite Skyz, a Houston-based technology company involved in process automation and healthcare industries has signed an agreement with Elio Motors, a technology bellwether with over 30K pre-sales of their vehicle that will begin delivery in 3Q15. The SkyzMatic dash will incorporate a brand-specific display, laid out over a series of screens as shown:

Combining a wide selection of data from the engine control computer, conventional sensors, GPS and internet connectivity, what makes the SkyzMatic system unique is that it can be adapted to practically any vehicle, either as OEM or aftermarket technology. By providing a wide range of display and convenience functions into the dashboard, and introducing the system in technology-leading automobiles, the hope is to de-clutter the cockpit for an integrated approach to the driving experience.

Look for this or similar systems to appear on the dash of many new cars within the next five years.
