Default Tesla offers leasing options for new Model S in U.S.

(Reuters) - Tesla Motors Inc unveiled a leasing policy for its new Model S with an option for buyers in the United States to return the car within three months of purchase.

U.S. Bank will offer a lease for buyers of the new Model S, lowering monthly lease payments by as much as 25 percent, Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk said in a blog post dated Oct. 25.

If not satisfied and the car is returned within three months of purchase, the remaining lease obligation will be waived, Musk said.

However, Tesla, which also provides an option of ordering the car on its website, said once the car is returned, it would not be possible to immediately lease another Model S.

Earlier this month, Tesla launched its all-wheel drive Model S, an electric car that can park itself and recognize obstacles on the road.

Last year Tesla announced its partnership with Wells Fargo & Co and U.S. Bank to offer a 10 percent down payment on the purchase of a Model S sedan, the Wall Street Journal said.

Default Toyota sells off Tesla shares, too

The incredible rise of Tesla's stock price has done little to now stop two major shareholders from ditching their stake in the American EV manufacturer. First, Daimler, parent company of Mercedes-Benz, ditched its four-percent stake, and less than a week later, Toyota is doing the same thing, selling off an undisclosed bit of its Tesla investment.

The move comes as Toyota winds down sales of the RAV4 EV, which gets its batteries and electric motor from Tesla at the company's Fremont, CA factory.

"We have a good relationship with Tesla, and will evaluate the feasibility of working together on future projects," Toyota spokesperson Kayo Doi told Bloomberg via email.

According to Bloomberg, Toyota maintained a 2.4-percent stake as recently as March 31, making it the tenth-largest of Tesla's investors. As the Japanese shed an undisclosed percentage of its shares, though, another automaker might be eyeing the California company.

Value Walk has a speculative story that claims BMW could be looking at tying up with Tesla, based on a reported meeting between execs from the two companies. The fact that the Munich-based company's carbon-fiber expertise fits nicely with the Palo Alto company's EV knowhow is apparently the driving force behind this speculation. But as usual, take this with a grain of salt.

Consumer Reports says Tesla Model S reliability is just 'average'

Tesla Motors chief Elon Musk strikes us as someone who retches at the word "average," especially when it's applied to one of his companies. But that's the reliability grade his company's Model S all-electric sedan has received from Consumer Reports. From what others have reported, that might not be a bad thing.

CR reached its conclusion by factoring in both its own experiences and the responses from more than 1,300 Model S owners. Slow response from retractable door handles and creaky windshields were two widely reported issues, but it should be noted that Tesla scored good marks for being willing to foot the bill for all repairs. In the grand scheme of things, CR says Tesla is comparable, reliability-wise, to the Acura RLX. While luxury models from Audi and Lexus have scored better, Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz models have recorded scores "far worse," the magazine said.

After almost 16,000 miles in its Model S, CR needed to have the car's infotainment screen hard reset and had one unscheduled service. Meanwhile, Edmunds reported that its 17 months with a $105,000 2013 Model S required seven unscheduled service visits, and it needed nine information screen resets. The drive unit needed to be replaced three times. We think CR would not have found that "average."

Because we had an official master Tesla thread that was locked. VH started an August thread afterwards and I continued the monthly trend since it's been expressed not to have large threads. Y'all need to make up your minds, you're killing me Smalls!

Thanks for the feedback.

Sometimes threads get closed because they run out of gas or are so all over the map that anyone new coming into them will have no idea what they're about.

On the other hand, we certainly don't need a thread per month for tesla or any brand.

Tesla is a brand new auto maker and has average reliability. Ford has been making cars for over a century and has below average reliability. Never mind the fact that Tesla has more/newer tech than just about any other car on the road. I swear some people just love to dump on Tesla for no reason, haters gonna hate.

Default Tesla Model S Achieves Five-Star Rating from Euro NCAP

The safety credentials of the Tesla Model S were proved by the crash tests carried out in America, and now confirmed across the pond via Euro NCAP.

The Model S went through the usual barrage of tests and came out the other side with a maximum five-star rating.

The Model S impressed all round, offering excellent protection for occupants and pedestrians alike (it has an “active bonnet” that rises in the event of an impact, lessening the blow). It’s only the outer edges of the bonnet that present a real hazard to people outside.

There was a slight issue with the passenger airbag not inflating correctly and allowing the occupant’s head to come into contact with the fascia, but this was immediately tracked down and fixed – it was a software calibration error that won’t be making its way to customer cars.

As for structural rigidity, the electric sedan achieved the maximum all round, the only area where it wasn’t excellent was chest protection in the side impact test. See it deform in the video posted below.

Default Tesla celebrates Veterans Day with army camo wrapped Model S

Click here to view more photos

Wrap applied by SS Customs

Tesla Motors and SS Customs have applied a custom wrap on a Model S as a method to celebrate this year's Veterans Day.

Several months ago, electric car manufacturer Tesla announced plans to become one of the biggest employers of military veterans in United States and already about five percent of the staff are veterans, with an additional 600 people likely to be hired in the near future. November 11 was Veterans Day and Tesla decided to further support veterans by showing a special Model S.

In collaboration with SS Customs, the electric sedan received an army camouflage body wrap, army green alloy wheels finish, yellow tinted headlights together with typical military equipment mounted on the custom roof rack.

Hopefully they corrected this issue for US cars as well.

As to EuroNCAP results, their 82% frontal rating was just enough to get 5 stars. Lots of other cars got rated better this year, GLA got 96% frontal

Do I remember wrongly that Tesla was called safest car ever made?
