Default Future flagship BMW X7 rendered

X5's bigger brother

BMW’s upcoming flagship SUV model was speculatively rendered by Malaysian automotive digital manipulator Theophilus Chin.

Little is known about the X7, but it will be based on the stretched platform of the next generation 5- and 7-Series. The vehicle is set to come out in 2017 or 2018 as a competitor for the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.

In late February, the Bavarian brand announced the model will be manufactured at the company’s Spartanburg (South Carolina) plant, where the automaker plans to invest 1 billion USD (730M EUR).

Default BMW X7 render is a taste of what's to come

Coming in 2017 or 2018

The already confirmed BMW X7 has been digitally imagined ahead of an expected 2017 or 2018 launch.

Towards the end of March we heard BMW announcing a huge $1 billon investment at the Spartanburg factory in South Carolina where they want to bump annual production rate to 450,000 cars by the end of 2016. The already confirmed X7 will be manufactured exclusively at this facility and is programmed to come out in 2017 or 2018.

Details about the X7 are scarce at the moment but it is believed the seven-seat crossover will be a global model and will ride on the same "35up" platform as the next generation 5- and 7-Series. If this turns out to be true, expect a lightweight construction combining aluminum, high-strength steel, magnesium and carbon-reinforced plastic which in the case of the 7-Series (G11) will enable a diet of approximately 200 kg (440 lbs) compared to the outgoing model.

The US-spec X7 will reportedly be offered with turbo inline-six and V8 gasoline engines along with possible straight-six diesels and a plug-in hybrid setup. Regardless of engine choice, all models will have an all-wheel drive setup and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

We won't be too surprised if BMW is preparing a concept for 2016 to preview the production X7.

It's about time. They haven't had a GL or Q7 competitor. From what I can see on the road, it's a pretty big segment they've been ignoring. However, the renders do not look flattering.

That maroon render wouldn't be closer to a GL's rear

Was only a matter of time before the X7 would come.

I agree. BMW will have six SUV's:

X1
X3
X4
X5
X6
X7

Maybe Lexus should expand their SUV line as well worldwide.

NX 200/200t/300h
RX 270/350/450h
GX 400/460
TX 460
LX 400d/570
SX 570 (Sequoia based SUV)

Agree the Maroon rendering totally stole GL design language, they basically just snapped BMW headlights and taillights on a GL.

But BMW really needs a proper 7 seater SUV in their lineup, more than the goofy X4 and X6. I would consider one for my growing

family if they do

Yuck. Looks awful.

How about a real dedicated sports car or two instead of all these different variations of SUV's/CUV's or just a high performance 3 or 5 series, 3cyl hybrid, or small roadster. For a company that is so associated with performance, racing, and driving they don't offer a single dedicated sports car like a M1, they have not had one for decades which is a shame.

starting to look a lot like the mercedes GL suv.

the first generation X5 was the best SUV design they ever made. It all went downhill from there.

Sure it looks like the GL, but it is still a GORGEOUS SUV. I'm surprised so many people are hating on it stating it's ugly. I think this generation of BMWs are the best looking by far.

Default Possible BMW X7 chassis testing mule returns in an additional batch of spy images

Click here to view more photos

Could be the 7-Series High Security

Our spies have sent us an second batch of pics depicting what could be the BMW X7 disguised as an all-wheel drive chassis testing mule based on the next-gen 7-Series.

Caught for the first time testing back in October, the camouflaged 7-Series has returned and this time too it carries extra weight to simulate the added bulk of the upcoming X7. However, we are not entirely sure this is indeed BMW’s flagship SUV as the engineers from Bavaria could be testing the next generation 7-Series High Security. The extra weight could be there to mimic the armor plating of the HS version which will rival the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Guard.

If this is indeed the BMW X7, the model is bound to hit the market in 2017 or 2018 and it will be manufactured at the firm's factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It will be based on the next generation 7-Series from where it will inherit the engines and gearboxes. BMW could be cooking up a V12-powered version as well as a plug-in hybrid derivative but the rumors have not been confirmed so far.

A concept previewing the X7 will likely be introduced at a major auto show next year.
