It appears there's something in the water out there in Utah, because Weber Basin canal employees pulled out quite a catch on Monday: a whopping Lexus!

This is one of many stories around the country i've heard lately. Even locally, a few carjackings of ES350, (Really?).. Most people have no clue which lexus model is which... Glad peeps wants to jack an ES350, but not a LS460 or GS..

Truly stolen.........or simple insurance-fraud? Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference.

Any 2006+ Lexus or new is pretty hard to steal unless the owners of the car keep the remote fob in the car or left the car running while getting something at the gas station. These cars have so many electronics it would be very hard to hot wire and get it to run without the remote fob.

I bet this is insurancr fraud ok maby the owner is really an idiot and left the keys in the car for the thief to steal

In my valley the insurance don't pay out if you've left the keys in the car, haven't locked it and don't give comprehensive cover if you don't have a tracker installed and linked to the service provider. Cops are not interested at all if you've left the keys in the car and in anyway they just give you a case number to take to the insurer.

So here that Lexus would end up with no insurance to "dry" all the electronics and mechanical parts, which can simply set the owner back the cost of the car.

Think again. For as little as $17, you can get a device that will allow you to amplify and retransmit the signal of a fob such that the car thinks it's present when it's hundreds of feet away. It's trivial to steal a keyless entry/start vehicle from someone's driveway while they're asleep.
