My friends & colleagues who own Hon/Toy have had more visits than I ever had when I had my Mazdas.
I have a Mazda and a Lexus. I see A LOT more complaining here on CL than on Mazdas 24/7

I'm not going to count on it. The Highlander, Santa Fe and Pathfinder will not be substantially changed by 2017, considering they all were changed in '13/'14. And I don't think the Pilot is going in that direction.

But Volvo is already going in that direction with their new XC90, offering only 4-cyl engines.

I think you can get an Explorer with the 4 cylinder Eco Boost engine, but who knows if others will follow. As mentioned, Volvo seems to be.

Yes you can get an EcoBoost 2.0 in the Explorer for a few years now, but it only comes with FWD. The MY15 Edge has a base one too.

Really glad you said this. This is likely the case considering the next rumored Mazdaspeed3 gets a 300hp AWD powertrain. If Mazda is dropping the V6, a turbo 4 with 270hp-310hp is almost a given for the CX-9

Volvo does not need 6cly engine globally, so they dont offer one anymore. It will likely hurt their sales in the US.

The XC90 hasn't had a significant redesign since it first debuted in 2002. The fact that anyone buys it at this point shows the loyalty Volvo has as a brand name; Mazda doesn't have that kind of following. I hope it works out for the CX-9, because I really like mine.

If Mazda can get this kind of output from a turbo 4, and make it tame enough for family transportation, hopefully, it's a winner. It's interesting that Hyundai has a 270 hp turbo engine in the Sonata, but still sticks with the V6 for the Santa Fe 7-passenger model.

because their customers preferred V6... I dont see why couldnt they get 300hp out of 4cly, everyone else can and has been doing it for years.

But look at the product. XC60 and S60 get little support from the current XC90, V70, XC70, S80, C70 etc..

Anyway this thread is about Mazda

Miata is sooooo close !

Other than specialty cars like the STI, who has 300hp 4 cylinder engines? Or stated another way, who has 300hp 4-cyl engines that are appropriate for every day, plain vanilla, run of the mill, family transportation? The upcoming Volvo XC-90 is the only one I am thinking of.

well, thats because their customers prefer V6 engines, not for the lack of ability to turbo charge 4cly.

I doubt you will see these 300hp in other "family" vehicles, because their companies have enough sales in the USA to justify V6 development.
