Will likely grow in size to distance from XE

The second generation Jaguar XF has been spied for the first time while undergoing testing ahead of a planned 2016 release.

Jaguar is busy right now putting the finishing touches on the 2015 XE baby sedan but as you can see work has already started on the larger XF which in a couple of years will reach second generation. The new XF is bound to grow in size in order to distance itself from the XE so the stretched wheelbase will grant more room inside the cabin, especially for rear passengers who will enjoy the additional legroom.

The second-gen XF is currently in its early development stage so it shouldn't come as a surprise the prototype seen here is wearing a full body camouflage.

However, we still get to see the LED daytime running lights which look quite similar to those fitted onto the upcoming XE. At the back, it seems the XF will adopt an Audi A5 Sportback-like liftback configuration replacing the current model's regular sedan trunk opening. Both the XE and second-gen XF will ride on Jaguar's newly developed lightweight iQ[Al] platform which will also underpin a production version of the C-X17 concept crossover.

As a result of making the switch to an all-new platform, we won't be too surprised if the 2016 Jaguar XF will lose as much as 100 kg (220 lbs). Both rear- and all-wheel drive systems will probably be available and matched with an updated variant of the 9-speed gearbox developed by ZF and implemented first in the 2014 Range Rover Evoque.

The second generation Jaguar XF will likely be introduced in 2016 at a major auto show.

Exciting. XF is gorgeous and has a good arsenal of power trains. The new platform should allow for more versatile AWD models too

I hope they cut more weight than mentioned.

The XJ weighs as much as the XF due to its aluminum platform. The XF would benefit much more if it lost near 500 lbs...

Looks like they'll lose the Rear Door/Window shape that was a close copy of the 3rd Gen Lexus GS. Seems to be set up like the XJ to have a 3rd set of windows behind the door in the c-pillar.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's new Jaguar design trend, I think the XE may have something similar too albeit a bit more pudgy

Give it the rear end look of the F-Type and I'd highly consider it.

Default Second-generation Jaguar XF spied for first time

Bigger yet lighter

Jaguar's second generation of the mid-size XF sedan has been spied undergoing preliminary testing on the Nürburgring.

On sale since 2007, the XF is starting to show its age and Jaguar needs to make the model bigger taking into account the XE is now out so there has to be more room between the two in order to better target different segments. Jaguar has the right recipe for that as testing of a new XF has started and as you can see it will be considerably larger and feature a stretched wheelbase so we should expect a roomier cabin with extra legroom for rear passengers.

The prototype seen here looks like a bigger XE which shouldn't come as a surprise as the styling won't be very different. One other big change aside from the enlarged size is the implementation of a sloping rear with a more practical liftback configuration thus replacing the current model's sedan layout.

The second-gen Jaguar XF will likely ride on the same iQ[Al] platform as the smaller XE and is expected to shave off as much as 100 kg (220 lbs). Rear-wheel drive will be standard but at an additional cost an AWD system will be offered. Details about the engine lineup are not available at this point but will likely include the supercharged V6 3.0-liter along with a series of four-cylinder Ingenium gasoline and diesel motors. The engine range will probably be topped by a supercharged V8 5.0-liter in the XFR-S which in the current generation puts out 542 bhp (405 kW) & 680 Nm (502 lb-ft).

A public debut of the new generation Jaguar XF will probably occur at a major auto show in 2016.

Default 2016 Jaguar XF spied in action around the Nurburgring [video]

Set to grow in size

The all-new Jaguar XF has been spied undergoing preliminary testing in Germany around the Nürburgring.

Upon first glance this might look like a camouflaged XE but hiding underneath the disguise is the second generation XF which will be bigger compared to today's model. The styling won't be a major departure compared to the smaller XE and it seems those criticized wide taillights from the baby Jaguar will be carried over onto the mid-size sedan.

Calling it a sedan might be wrong as judging by the spy video and the attached (older) images, the overhauled XF will actually be a liftback as indicated by the more sloped roofline. This is good news not only because it looks sleeker than the current car but a liftback configuration is also more practical as you can squeeze in taller objects.

Regardless of the body style, the all-new XF will lose as much as 100 kg (220 lbs) as a result of making the switch to the iQ[Al] platform also used by the 2015 XE. Power will come from several economical four-cylinder Ingenium engines sending output as standard to the rear axle but an optional AWD setup will also be offered. More potent versions will likely get the familiar V6 3.0-liter supercharged motor while the XFR-S is expected to make use of a V8 5.0-liter supercharged engine tweaked to develop more than the current model's 542 bhp & 680 Nm output.

The second generation XF will likely go on sale in 2016 so an official reveal could occur late next year.

Default All-new Jaguar XF to debut at 2015 New York Auto Show

Bigger and lighter

The second generation Jaguar XF will receive its world premiere in early April at the New York Auto Show.

Set to significantly grow in size, Jaguar's all-new XF will get a design heavily inspired by the smaller XE compact sedan from where it will also inherit the iq[Al] platform which will provide weight savings of up to 100 kg (220 lbs). Thanks to its increased dimensions, the overhauled XF will provide more rear legroom and trunk space which represent two issues of the current model.

In terms of engines, Jaguar will ditch the Ford units in favor of the newly developed Ingenium motors which are up to 80 kg (176 lbs) lighter. Most of them are going to be sourced from the XE but probably with a bit more power to match the weight difference. Sitting on top of the range will once again be the XFR and XFR-S while a flagship variant developed by Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) is rumored to get a V8 engine with almost 600 bhp (447 kW).

Deliveries of the second-gen Jaguar XF will commence in the early autumn of next year while the current XF Sportbrake will probably live on until late 2016 before being replaced by a new model.

2016 Jaguar XF to spawn a long-wheelbase variant

Will be aim at Chinese consumers

Jaguar has high hopes for China so it comes as little surprise that the next-generation XF will be offered as a long-wheelbase model.

According to several Jaguar board members who spoke to Car Magazine, the XF L will be aimed squarely at Chinese consumers but could eventually be offered in additional markets.

Little is known about the long-wheelbase variant but it will ride on an extended version of the company's aluminum-intensive iQ[Al] platform. The additional length will benefit rear seat passengers and hopefully sway sales away from models such as the Audi A6 L.

While Jaguar will introduce the redesigned XF at the New York Auto Show, the XF L will likely bow at a Chinese auto show in the future. The magazine also says we can expect another XF Sportbrake but it's still a ways off.

Default Second generation Jaguar XF spied during final testing

Could spawn long wheelbase version

Our agile spy photographers have snapped on camera a fully camouflaged prototype of the second-gen Jaguar XF.

Scheduled to come out early April at New York Auto Show, the overhauled Jaguar XF will grow in size to distance itself from the XE compact sedan and could also spawn a long wheelbase derivative aimed primarily for the Chinese market. It will borrow the XE's aluminum-intensive architecture which will enable an approximate 100 kg (220 lbs) weight loss despite being larger than the outgoing model.

Under the hood Jaguar will install their new Ingenium gasoline & diesel engines which are about 80 kg (176 lbs) lighter on average compared to the old Ford units. Later during the XF's lifespan, more potent XFR and XFR-S versions will come out and these will eventually be topped by a high-powered 600 bhp V8 model developed by Special Vehicle Operations (SVO).

Jaguar will kick off deliveries of the new XF early fall 2015 while the more practical XF Sportbrake will arrive towards the end of 2016.
