Default Renault Sport R.S. 01 breaks cover with more than 500 hp [video]

Weighs less than 1,100 kg

Following a couple of teasers, Renault has unveiled the R.S. 01 racecar which features a LMP1-eligible carbon fiber monocoque.

The Renault R.S. 01 racecar boasts a carbon monocoque which meets LMP1 regulations and has been developed in collaboration with Dallara. The R.S. 01 weighs less than 1,100 kg (2,425 lbs) and will be motivated by Nissan GT-R's twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 engine tweaked by Nismo packing more than 500 bhp (373 kW) and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque.

The futuristic body will be made from composites and will include a front lower splitter channeling the air flow into extractors installed behind the front wheels. These extractors are running along the doors and change their shape turning into intercooler scoops aiding cooling. At the back there's a massive wing and diffuser as well as LED taillights and a twin exhaust arrangement.

Renault's R.S. 01 racecar sends its 500+ hp to the rear axle via a seven-speed Sadev sequential gearbox allowing the vehicle to hit a top speed of more than 300 km/h (186 mph). It rides on 18-inch Braid wheels shod in specially developed Michelin tires while the stopping power comes from 380mm carbon discs with six-piston calipers.

Other features worth mentioning include a steel roll cage and a double wishbone + pushrods suspension together with two-way Öhlins adjustable dampers. In terms of dimensions, the Renault R.S. 01 is 4710mm long, 2000mm wide and 1166mm tall, with a 2744mm wheelbase and 1675mm front & 1624mm rear tracks.

Patrice Ratti, CEO of Renault Sport Technologies, describes the R.S. 01 "as a marriage between the beauty of Renault DeZir and the performance of Formula Renault 3.5!" while Alain Prost, Renault Ambassador for motorsport, says it’s "a spectacular racing car, in the purest tradition of GT."

The vehicle which is priced from 282,000 GBP will be used in next year's World Series by Renault in a new championship called Renaultsport Trophy. It will be a one-make championship with an emphasis on "technical fairness, sporting ethics and cost control."

The car is big. Wished it were 4C or Cayman size. Wonder if a street version will be built. This is basically an Alpine.

It amazes me how Renault gets away with producing some of the most unreliable cars, and yet they stay in business. I guess as long as it looks nice, has features, an attractive price and warranty, the buying public can be easily fooled, over and over again.

Default Renault Sport shows how the R.S. 01 was born [video]

Design completed in just five months

Renault Sport has released a new video detailing how the track-only R.S. 01 came to life.

Designed in only five months, the R.S. 01 racecar will compete in this year's newly established one-make Renaultsport Trophy championship within the World Series by Renault. It benefits from a carbon fiber monocoque which meets FIA's LMP1 standards and the entire car weighs less than 1,100 kg (2,425 lbs).

Co-developed with Nismo, the racecar is powered by the Nissan GT-R's twin-turbo V6 3.8-liter engine which in this application delivers 500 bhp (373 kW) - 550 bhp (410 kW) & 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque and is reliable enough to last for two full seasons. All that power is channeled to the rear wheels through a Sadev 7-speed sequential gearbox which enables the R.S. 01 hit a top speed of more than 186 mph (300 km/h).

Renault has previously mentioned deliveries of the £282,000 R.S. 01 will kick off in March

Default Renault Pulls The Plug On The Renault Sport Trophy

Few automakers run such extensive motorsport activities that Renault does – especially when it comes to circuit racing. But the French automaker has been reconfiguring its racing programs, and the latest move will see it shut down the Renault Sport Trophy.

Launched just last year, the Trophy is the latest in a long line of spec racing series run by Renault, stretching back all the way to 1976. The current iteration replaced the Mégane-centered Eurocup with the RS 01, a purpose-built sports racing car built by Dallara and powered by the Nissan GT-R's 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6.

The car debuted in 2014 and has formed the backbone of the series since 2015. But the series will cease operation with the end of the current season, scheduled to take place this coming weekend at Estoril in Portugal.

The 30 teams currently competing in the series are being offered the opportunity to convert their cars to GT3 spec, which will open up a whole array of possibilities for competition around the world.

The Trophy is the second such casualty of Renault Sport's shift in focus following the withdrawal of its support from the Formula Renault 3.5 series. With the cancellation of the Trophy as well, the erstwhile Renault Sport Series (previously known as the World Series by Renault) now comes down solely to Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup – a vital step along the formula racing ladder whose championship was previously won by eventual F1 drivers Stoffel Vandoorne, Valterri Bottas, Kamui Kobayashi, Scott Speed, and Felipe Massa.

The cancellations come as Renault has re-entered F1 and increased its involvement in Formula E.
