I think Ford has no more stake in Mazda..............so yeah, it's a pure Mazda effort now and all their engines (Skyactiv philosophy) are completely their own. I test drove a Mazda 6 with a 2.5 liter engine and wow, I was surprised at how this four-cylinder engine easily reached 5,000 RPM in such a short time. I had to be careful though since it was a test drive unit.
Still with that said, now that Mazda is on its own, the fate of a next-gen CX-9 is still undetermined. And for a few reasons:
1) The contract of Mazda with Ford for their 3.7 liter CYCLONE V6 engine is about to expire.
2) Will Mazda still be interested on developing their own in-house V6 engine using Skyactiv technology to power a top-of-the-line next-gen CX-9?
3) If not, will they seek to 'borrow' a six-cylinder engine from another manufacturer?
4) If they won't go V6, then the future CX-9 would be four-cylinder only. Would the 2.5 Skyactiv be enough to power it?
EDIT: Rumor has it that CX-9 may share Turbocharged 2.5L Skyactiv with Mazdaspeed 3, but tuned for large SUV. MS3 may have 300+hp.
Thanks. I edited, and saw your post. You're correct, it's Turbocharged 2.5L Skyactiv. Can't wait to see MS3. Last one was a "complete" car out of the box, hope this one take it to the next level.

Mazda has me waiting with such anticipation for this latest wave of vehicles. Revised sedans, Adding the Speed, revised CX-5, upcoming CX-3, redesigned CX-9, next gen power trains

After Ford got rid of every share of Mazda, Mazda had no clue where to start, but now they are sporty brand competitive in every segment they are in.
Suffice to say weaning off Ford platforms and engines and transitioning to in house is tough when you're a much smaller outfit than the competition but here they are producing a fine stable of vehicles and a bright future ahead
It took them awhile to figure it out. Not bloody long, but awhile.
i think they already knew what was happening by then... CX5 and 6 were not released too long after, as well as sky active engines... so they probably knew years before.

Lol. This reminds me of the difficulty all the Swiss watch house had difficulty making their own in house movements(gears etc) after Swatch gave them a a deadline that they weren't going to provide them anymore. I CAN'T imagine a while engine and auto related parts. But glad to see Mazda going on it's own. Good for them!
Different segments and price points, but just from a styling perspective, IMO, the exterior styling of the current and refreshed CX-5 trumps the upcoming NX.

Honestly to each their own. I personally like both, and while I lean more towards the NX because of the creature comforts and ownership experience that comes with the Lexus, I would be more than happy to be in the CX-5!

CX5 looks really nice, but compared to NX, it is pretty plain (but still nice). Reason NX is going to sell so well is that it looks like nothing else, and a lot went into its exterior (and interior) design... look at those shoulders alone.

For the price point though and what you get, CX-5 has a lot going for it. It was also one of the first small CUVs to offer BSM
