Default Honda S2000 successor green-lighted, will be a mid-engine coupe - report

Could be built in Ohio

According to a recent report, Honda has green-lighted an S2000 successor.

Details are limited but Motoring says the model will be a coupe with a mid-mounted engine. This would be a radical departure as the previous S2000 was a front-engine roadster.

Regardless, the website says the car will use a revised version of the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that powers the Civic Type-R.

It will reportedly be backed up by an electric motor which will give the model a combined output of roughly 365 bhp (272 kW). The powertrain is slated to be connected to seven-speed dual-clutch transmission which sends power to the rear wheels.

If everything pans out, the S2000 successor will be built alongside the Acura / Honda NSX at the company's new Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio.

Looks like this class is heating up again- across multiple price ranges too. Alfa Romeo 4C, Toyota roadster, BMW roadster, Fiat Roadster, Miata...

I guess this was the "baby NSX" that has been rumored since the NSX concept debuted.

I would be surprised if ends up costing about the same as the previous S2000. I'm guessing $40k minimum for all that gadge.

Ooooorrrrr they can give it another name.

And like the CR-Z... which supposedly they're wising up and offering a gas version of. So to turnaround and then throw a hybrid system in this would be a bit of a head-scratcher.

I don't believe Honda is offering a gas only version of the CR-Z.

Whats ironic is people are clamoring for lightweight, pure cars. The FRS/BRZ proved that you don't need all that crap to be successful. Honda had the pure S 2000 and NSX which they should have continued and maybe created new models that feature hybrid tech with a different name.

I am sure they will execute much better than with the CR-Z.

exactly !!! especially when Honda's hybrid technology isn't something to write home about in the first place. this is just dumb, it'll probably cost around $50k and too many moving parts to work on.
