*Ford Explorer sales increased 32 percent; Ford Escape posted best July with a 19 percent sales increase

Ford Motor Company U.S. sales of 212,236 vehicles increased 10 percent over a year ago for the best July in eight years. Retail sales of 162,028 vehicles are up 7 percent.

“July proved to be a very good month for Ford and Lincoln with positive gains across the board in all the major segments,” said John Felice, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. “Escape and Fusion were big contributors to our sales increases, with both setting July sales records. F-Series again topped the 60,000-vehicle sales mark and we’re seeing great initial demand for our launch vehicles, such as the Transit Connect, Transit Connect Wagon and the Lincoln MKC as availability builds.”

Ford Fusion set an all-time monthly sales record in July with 23,942 cars sold, a gain of 17 percent. The West region of the United States continues to drive Fusion sales higher, with a 24 percent retail increase relative to a 22 percent increase nationally.

Ford Explorer sales are up 32 percent with 16,797 vehicles sold, for the vehicle’s best July since 2005. Ford Escape sales are up 19 percent, setting an all-time performance record for July.

Ford F-Series sales are up 5 percent with 63,240 trucks sold, a number achieved with the lowest incentives of the three largest pickup truck manufacturers.

SUVs rule

Ford, Toyota Sales Top Estimates in Big Month for SUVs

Strong sport-utility vehicle demand sent Ford Motor Co. (F)’s U.S. sales in July up 9.5 percent and Toyota Motor Corp. (7203)’s up 12 percent to exceed analyst estimates keeping deliveries headed toward the best year since 2006.
Ford’s said it sold 211,467 light vehicles last month as Escape SUV sales soared 19 percent to its best July ever. Chrysler’s deliveries jumped 20 percent as Jeep also recorded its best July on a 41 percent surge by the SUV brand. GM’s large SUVs powered a 9.4 percent increase. Toyota sales benefited from the RAV4 compact utility’s best month ever.
“The crossover SUV segment is just hot, hot, hot,” Michelle Krebs, a senior analyst at AutoTrader.com, said today in a telephone interview. “It’s driving so much of the sales today.”
Widely available credit, low interest rates and a rebounding U.S. economy, marked by a 4 percent jump in gross domestic product in the second quarter, are projected to keep the annualized selling rate, adjusted for seasonal trends, above 16 million for the fifth straight month as buyers returned to dealer lots following the frigid winter.
“The U.S. economy left July carrying good momentum,” Kurt McNeil, GM U.S. vice president of sales operations, said in a statement. “The economy has bounced back strongly from the harsh winter, consumer confidence has reached a post-recession high, energy prices remain moderate and job growth continues. The stage is set for strong sales through the balance of the year.”

Analysts had estimated a 9.2 percent gain for Ford, a 23 percent jump for Chrysler, and 11 percent increases for GM and Toyota.
16 Million Plus

Chrysler forecast an annualized sales pace for the market in July of 16.8 million, including medium- and heavy-duty trucks that typically account for at least 200,000 annual sales. Analysts had estimated a pace of 16.7 million light vehicles, up from 15.8 million a year earlier. GM also said it sees a 16.7 million light-vehicles sales pace for July, giving the industry its fifth straight month above a 16 million pace.
Total light-vehicle sales are forecast to rise about 10 percent in July to 1.45 million with one more sales day than a year earlier, according to analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.
Even as Ford results topped estimates, John Felice, the automaker’s U.S. sales chief, said the industry growth is beginning to slow as the auto market nears a peak, which drove up industry incentives by $190 per vehicle. At the same time, average prices industrywide rose $800 per vehicle last month as car buyers shift to more costly SUVs.
Car Incentives

“We’ve seen a very healthy industry this year, but the rate of growth has slowed,” Felice said on a conference call. “On the car side of the business, incentive spending there is aggressive.”
Sales of GM’s redesigned large SUVs surged. The Chevrolet Tahoe rose 52 percent, the GMC Yukon jumped 48 percent and Cadillac Escalade sales more than doubled.
“Sales of utility vehicles soared in July because American families feel better about the economy than they have in a long time, and they are finding an incredible variety of redesigned and all-new models,” McNeil said.
Better gas mileage on redesigned SUVs, such as the Ford Escape, is stealing sales from cars, Felice said.
“You’re seeing some customers who may have considered a car before to maximize fuel economy coming into the utility segment to take advantage of the improved fuel economy,” Felice said.
High Estimates

Chrysler, wholly owned by Fiat SpA (F), said its sales rose to 167,667, marking the third-largest U.S. automaker’s 52nd consecutive monthly increase. All five of its brands increased deliveries as the Auburn Hills, Michigan-based automaker posted its best July in nine years.
“With Chrysler, I think the estimates were just too high,” Krebs said. “This is another strong month for them and, so far, for the other automakers.”
Fiat shareholders approved merging the parent company and the U.S. business into a new entity, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV at a special meeting in the Italian manufacturer’s hometown of Turin. The new company will switch its main stock listing to New York and its headquarters to London.
Sales of the Chrysler brand’s Town & Country minivan jumped 41 percent for its best July since 2006, Ram pickup sales rose 14 percent and the Fiat brand’s 500L gained 49 percent.
Nissan reported an 11 percent advance in sales to 121,452 for the month that fell short of analysts’ projected 14 percent increase.
SUV Strength

GM sales, helped by redesigned large SUVs, rose to 256,160 vehicles, the Detroit-based automaker said in an e-mailed statement. The company’s GMC truck brand rose 22 percent while the Buick and Chevrolet brands both increased almost 8 percent. Cadillac fell 2.6 percent.
Ford’s SUV sales jumped 17 percent, with its Explorer model up 32 percent to its best July since 2005. Ford also had a record month for sales of its Fusion sedan, which rose 17 percent to 23,942. Ford F-Series pickup sales gained 4.6 percent.
GM slipped 1 percent to $33.49 at 11:45 a.m., while Ford fell 1.2 percent to $16.81.
Rising Demand

The sales growth seen in July was evident at Ames Ford Lincoln in Iowa, where sales have risen fivefold in the last 18 months as buyers embrace low-cost financing on popular models like the Fusion sedan and F-150 pickup.
The “new car business is in very good shape right now,” said Rick Pattison, the dealership’s new car manager. “New cars are really better than they have ever been.”
The revamped cars and trucks from Ford, GM and other automakers are luring buyers to dealerships in droves and prompting analysts, already bullish about the industry’s prospects, to issue even more optimistic projections. Analysts estimate deliveries of new cars and light trucks will rise to 16.3 million by the end of the year. The new estimate means this year would be the biggest for auto sales since 2006, when 16.6 million units were sold.
Available Credit

Automakers are benefiting from widely available credit and low interest rates, said Jessica Caldwell, an analyst with Edmunds.com. A change in buying habits is also making owning a new car more affordable over time with leasing and longer-term loans attracting buyers, she said.
“Even though cars are more expensive now, people are leasing now more than we’ve seen in a long time and loan rates are averaging out around 5 years,” said Caldwell, who forecasts sales this year of 16.4 million vehicles. “When you’re leasing or you’re spreading payments out over six or seven years as opposed to three or four, all of a sudden that car doesn’t appear to be as expensive.”
The automakers are in a much stronger position than the last time sales were this robust, Caldwell said.
In 2006, U.S. automakers GM, Chrysler and Ford were facing increased competition from Asian manufacturers, higher labor costs and rising gasoline prices that dinged sales of pickups and sport-utility vehicles, their most profitable models.

General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) dealers delivered 256,160 vehicles in the United States in July, for the company’s highest July sales since 2007. Total sales were up 9 percent compared with a year ago. Retail sales – those to individual customers – were up 4 percent. Commercial deliveries were up 69 percent and all other fleet deliveries were up 21 percent.

Sales of crossovers and trucks, which include pickups, vans and SUVs, surged by double-digits, pushing combined sales to 1,048,114 through July. GM was the first automaker to pass the million-unit milestone in both 2014 and 2013.

“Sales of utility vehicles soared in July because American families feel better about the economy than they have in a long time, and they are finding an incredible variety of redesigned and all-new models in our showrooms,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president of Sales Operations. “Small, compact, medium, large – sales were strong across the board.”

During July, GM sold 100,122 crossovers and SUVs, bringing the calendar-year-to-date total to 587,250 units – the best month for utility vehicle sales since August 2007. Compared with 2013, crossover deliveries increased 26 percent in July and they are up 5 percent year to date. Large non-luxury SUVs were up 25 percent in July, and they are up 15 percent year to date. Including the Cadillac Escalade, SUV sales are up 32 percent.
The Buick Encore, 1 of the industry’s 1st small crossovers, saw a 28 percent sales increase compared with July 2013.
GM’s medium-sized Chevrolet, GMC and Buick crossovers, which were redesigned for the 2014 model year, were up 14 percent compared with last July, led by a 25 percent increase in Chevrolet Traverse deliveries.
Combined sales of Chevrolet and GMC large SUVs, which are all new for the 2015 model year, were up 25 percent compared with a year ago. GM’s estimated share of the large SUV segment is 77 percent on a retail basis.
Cadillac Escalade deliveries nearly doubled and Cadillac’s estimated share of the large luxury SUV segment is now about 37 percent on a retail basis.
“GM and the U.S. economy left July carrying good momentum,” McNeil said. “The economy has bounced back strongly from the harsh winter, consumer confidence has reached a post-recession high, energy prices remain moderate and job growth continues. The stage is set for strong sales through the balance of the year.

“In particular, there is a lot of pent-up demand for our new large SUVs and we expect pickup deliveries to be strong, as they usually are in the second half of the year.”

July Sales Highlights (vs. 2013 except as noted)
The seasonally adjusted annual selling rate (SAAR) for light vehicles in July was an estimated 16.7 million units, topping 16 million units for the fifth consecutive month.
Total Chevrolet deliveries were up 8 percent, on the strength of trucks, crossovers and a 4 percent increase in retail car sales. This year marked Chevrolet’s best July sales since 2007.
Chevrolet Corvette deliveries more than tripled for its best July since 2004, and the Camaro was up 25 percent, for its best July since 1995. In addition, the Volt was up 13 percent, the Malibu was up 9 percent and Sonic was up 6 percent. Silverado sales were equal to a year ago.
Buick had its best July since 2006, with sales up 8 percent.
Every GMC nameplate posted a sales increase, including the new Sierra, driving sales 22 percent higher. GMC had its best July since 2006.
GM’s average transaction prices (ATPs) in July were in line with June 2014, and they are up more than $2,000 per unit versus a year ago, according to J.D. Power PIN estimates. GM’s large pickup ATPs were equal to June.
Incentive spending as a percentage of ATP was 11.2 percent, the lowest of all domestic automakers, according to PIN. GM was up 0.2 points month over month and the industry was up 0.3 points. On a year-over-year basis, GM was up 0.1 points and the industry average was up 0.5 points.
GM’s gains in the commercial segment were driven by pickup and van sales, which were both up 78 percent. Sales to rental customers increased 22 percent due to timing. Year to date, rental sales are essentially equal to a year ago. Sales to government customers were up 8 percent. GM’s fleet mix in July was about 23 percent, which is below the company’s typical mix of about 26 percent.

Lightbulb Audi

Audi reported that its July 2014 sales increased 11.9% to 14,616 vehicles, a total that stands as the 43rd consecutive month of record monthly U.S. sales for the brand. Audi U.S. sales year-to-date increased 13.3% to 98,965 vehicles.

Audi has maintained steady momentum throughout 2014, with the best-ever July results following record sales for the first half of the year. The previous July record was set in 2013 with sales of 13,064 vehicles. To date, 2014 has produced four of the six best U.S. sales months for the premium car brand.

“Due to the sustained high demand for our Premium cars, we needed to move our 2015 model year release ahead of schedule as supply became available early July,” said Mark Del Rosso, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Audi of America. “That gives us tremendous confidence heading into the 2nd half of the year with the new Audi A3 Cabriolet, A3 Sedan TDI and the S3 performance model reaching showrooms within weeks, and the new Q3 crossover arriving later this fall.”

By the end of July, Audi and its U.S. dealers had a lean 47 days’ supply of unsold cars and 29 days of unsold SUVs in inventory.

After its April U.S. sales debut, the 2015 Audi A3 Sedan has maintained a strong and consistent sales pace. July 2014 brought 2,164 A3 sales to solidify the model’s standing among the top three of the brand’s best sellers.

July totals for the top-of-the-range Audi models kept pace, constituting nearly 1/3 of all Audi sales. Audi A8 demand increased 11.3% for the month as customers responded well to the updated 2015 model line. Audi Q7 YTD sales increased by 8.9%.

July is the 12th consecutive month of record sales for Audi Certified pre-owned. It also marks the 2nd highest monthly total of all-time with an increase of 26.6%, to a total of 4,116 CPO vehicles sold; CPO sales year-to-date increased 15.6 %.

Highlights:
- The all-new 2015 Audi A3 sedan models officially went on sale this spring, with 9,899 cars sold since launch.
- Sales of Audi premium category vehicles (Audi A6, Audi A7, Audi A8, and Audi Q7) increased 13% year-to-date, representing 32.2% of total Audi sales year-to-date and 32% of the Audi year-to-date sales gain.
- Sales mix for Audi S performance variants finished the month at 18.5% for the S4 sedan; 32% for the S5/ RS 5; 5.5% for the S6; 22.4% for the S7 / RS 7; 15.1% for the S8; 34.7% for the TTS and TTS Roadster, and 7.7% for the SQ5 crossover.
- Sales of Audi A8 increased 11.3% compared to July 2013
- Sales of the Audi Q5 increased 0.4% compared to July 2013 due mostly to tight supplies; YTD sales grew 7.6% compared to previous period.
- Sales of the Audi Q7 increased 8.9% compared to July 2013; YTD sales grew 24.9% compared to previous period.
- July sales mix for Audi TDI models: Audi A6 TDI at 18.8%; Audi A7 TDI at 14.7%; A8 TDI at 10.7%; Audi Q5 TDI at 14.2%, Audi Q7 TDI at 24.1%, with an overall mix of 13.3% on 1,298 total TDI sales for July.
- Audi Certified pre-owned sales increased 26.6% to 4,116 vehicles in July; YTD CPO sales rose 15.6% to 25,943 vehicles sold.

Passat delivered 8,668 units for the month
Jetta sedan delivered 11,008 units for the month

Herndon, VA (August 1, 2014) — Volkswagen of America, Inc. (VWoA) today reported 30,553 units delivered in July.

The all-new Golf GTI is continuing its strong start with 1,727 vehicles delivered in July. The seventh generation GTI has earned high praise, including being named the winner to the Cars.com/USA Today/MotorWeek “Cheap Speed Challenge.” The challenge focused on compact coupes, sedans and hatchbacks that cost less than $30,000 and come with features popular among drivers looking for performance in a new car. In addition, the GTI triumphed over fierce competition to win a recent MotorTrend comparison test, taking top honors in the compact car segment. The all-new 2015 Golf TSI and TDI Clean Diesel models recently hit showrooms and will see a full month of sales in August.

“We’re thrilled with the early response to the all-new 2015 Golf GTI, which has already racked up some impressive accolades in both enthusiast and mainstream publications," said Mark McNabb, chief operating officer, Volkswagen of America. “With the continued roll-out of the Golf family, including the Golf TDI Clean Diesel, the turbocharged TSI model and the upcoming e-Golf this fall, we are confident we will see more showroom traffic at our dealers in the weeks and months ahead."

The Chattanooga-built Passat totaled 8,668 units delivered for the month. In July the Passat TDI, the only clean diesel in the midsize sedan segment, delivered 2,442 clean diesels or 28.2 percent of total Passat sales.

Last month Volkswagen announced they will be investing approximately US$900 million in the production of a newly developed, 7-passenger SUV at the Chattanooga, Tennessee manufacturing facility. The investment will create 2,000 additional jobs in the US and includes the establishment of a National Research & Development and Planning Center in Chattanooga. Production of the new vehicle will start at the end of 2016.

Total Jetta deliveries for June, including SportWagen, accounted for 13,142 units. The Tiguan and Touareg delivered 2,121 and 581 units respectively.

Arrow Honda/Acura

08/01/2014 - TORRANCE, Calif.
Honda Accord posts best July sales in 5 years
Honda CR-V mints all-time July record
Acura MDX posts best July sales in four years, setting a new monthly record
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported July 2014 Honda and Acura vehicle sales of 135,908 units. The Honda division posted sales of 123,428 units in July while Acura sold 12,480 units in the same period. Year-to-date American Honda sales reached 875,344 units.

Honda
In a month of bests, Accord, the brand's top-selling model, finished its best July in 5 years, CR-V posted its best July sales ever and the all-new Fit had its best month of the year so far.
Accord had its 7th straight month above 30,000 sales with 35,073 July sales, up 11.3 percent.
CR-V, the nation's best-selling utility vehicle through June, broke a July record for the 2nd consecutive year, bringing its year-to-date sales to 28,522, up 4.8 percent.
With dealer supplies continuing to build, the all-new 2015 Fit posted its strongest monthly sales so far this year with 5,115 units, up 1.3 percent vs. July 2013 and up 38.3 percent over June 2014 sales.
"The CR-V continues to cement its place as America's favorite and best-selling SUV with yet another record month of sales," said Jeff Conrad, Honda division senior vice president and general manager. "Combined with Accord, which is on its way to become the most popular car in the U.S. for a 2nd straight year, Honda once again has the vehicles of choice in 2 of the biggest market classes."

Acura
Overall Acura sales reflect a virtual sell out of prior TL and TSX models as the company prepared for launch of the 2015 TLX line of luxury performance sedans, which is now underway nationwide. MDX, America's all-time best-selling 3-row luxury SUV, was the brand's best-selling model, besting a year-old July record.
All-new 2015 TLX is arriving at dealers now.
MDX July sales rose 13.2 percent on sales of 6,283 units, setting a new July record and combined with RDX, set a new July record for light trucks.
"Our July sales were definitely impacted by a lack of sedan availability as we sold out of TSX and TL," said Mike Accavitti, Acura division senior vice president and general manager. "We're confident that the all-new TLX luxury performance sedan, arriving at dealers now, will quickly remedy the situation and drive Acura sales growth through the 2nd half of the year."

Lightbulb Hyundai

Hyundai Motor America, recently ranked the highest non-premium brand in J.D. Power’s APEAL and IQS reports, posted its best July sales ever. Sales for the month were 67,011 units, up 1.5 percent compared with the same period in 2013. The Sonata had another strong month with sales of 22,577 up 19 percent while the Santa Fe recorded sales of 8,655, up 26 percent.

“As the summer weather heated up across the country, so did the selling season,” said Bob Pradzinski, vice president of national sales, Hyundai Motor America. “With 2015 models beginning to hit showrooms, incentive spend up across major brands and competitive financing available, it’s a buyers’ market that many shoppers took advantage of.”

The 2015 Genesis and Equus, Hyundai’s premium models, both saw sales gains for the month, up 5 percent and 76 percent, respectively.

Lightbulb Kia

Coming off the best 1st half sales performance in company history, Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced record July sales of 52,309 units, a 6.7 percent increase over the same period last year. After launching 7 all-new or significantly redesigned vehicles in 2013, Kia’s year-to-date sales are up 7.2 percent, and the brand’s aggressive new product cadence will continue this quarter with the scheduled launches of the all-new Sedona and Soul EV. Since arriving in 2009, U.S. sales of the iconic Soul have exceeded the 500,000 unit mark, and the wildly popular urban passenger vehicle recently topped the Compact MPV segment in the J.D. Power APEAL Study for the 3rd straight year.

“Kia’s 20th anniversary in the U.S. has included a number of historic milestones and achievements resulting from 1 of the freshest and most wide-ranging lineups in the industry as well as our unyielding commitment to delivering world-class quality,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president of sales and marketing, KMA. “As Kia’s units-in-operation count continues to grow, so does the level of recognition from highly regarded industry experts and consumers who have experienced the extraordinary design, technology, safety and value we offer, from subcompact to luxury.”

The Forester and XV Crosstrek model lines both contributed significantly to the company’s strong July result while posting best-ever monthly sales records. The Outback, Legacy and BRZ model lines were also notably strong. Subaru expects the sales momentum to continue now that the all-new 2015 Outback and Legacy models have begun arriving at retailers.
