city car for women, small family car, 2nd car in the house.... thats what it is in Europe where they sold a ton last year.

i did not see this one yet so I cant really know but FMC had parts that looked too cheap, in otherwise good car... someone at Toyota decided the plastic should get unusual patterns that looked cheap to Europeans... now that TMME is in charge of the project, they changed those to proper leather grain patterns plus added more soft stuff... so it should look good in the class now and most journos did mention it had high quality interior. Price stayed the same, with more equipment added... so it is not like it was substantially more expensive to do this "proper" grain on plastic, it just needed someone from TMME to make sure they dont use some crazy japanese stuff.

We got the prices locally and basically same price but extra standard VSC + 4 extra airbags to base.

I only wish they added better LCD in meters, like they have optionally in Japan BUT they did add almost standard 7" screen in Europe (up from 6.1+ doubled the res+added more features) and obviously price for Hybrids and Diesels is already up to the mid-pack Auris price.

Europe gets the basic one, like in Auris.

Also, while they updated 1.0l with new tech, 1.4D4D was made quieter and hybrid more efficient, there were no updates to 1.33l - main engine - in Europe, despite Japan getting that new tech 1.33 with +20% better mpg than before. Since this engine is produced in Europe, it might come later on, together with Auris update - or they decided against it due to the price.

I like what I'm seeing. Toyota still makes the best small sub compact cars.

not sure about US, but facelift got Euro spec up to speed... plus 7" display is now standard.

compared to pre-facelift, it does look like huge upgrade in tech, especially with 7" display which was previously available only with very expensive navigation

Well, at least the Yaris offers something different. Most of the other American-market subcompacts in the same price class offer only a CVT for an automatic. Hyundai and Kia, though, offer an (IMO) proper 6-speed automatic on the Accent and Rio.

(and bit is correct.....the typical Corolla buyer probably won't care).

The 1st gen Yaris was awesome. It really redefined the sub-compact segment.

The current Yaris is a cost cutting, GFC special LOL

it is also much better vehicle than first one... I really like first one, it was way more unique at the time, but let it be said that we had 2 MMC's in Europe that were just for fixing quality issues. 2012 might have some questionable looking plastics but it is overall twice the car... IMHO for Euro model, but they are now all the same except for equipment.

Default Toyota Announces WRC Return in 2017 with the Yaris, Akio Toyoda Test Drives it [w/Vid

Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) has announced its return to the FIA World Rally Championship in 2017 with the Yaris WRC, a car developed and built entirely at its technical center in Cologne, Germany.

The Toyota Yaris WRC has already completed a preliminary test program on tarmac and gravel stages across Europe, with TMG to continue testing over the next two years to prepare for a return to the series in which it won four drivers’ and three manufacturers’ world titles in the 1990s.

Toyota president Akio Toyoda himself made the announcement at a news conference where the Yaris WRC made its public debut in its new launch livery. He proved he remains probably the coolest CEO in the automotive industry by test driving the car in Tahara, Japan, a week before the announcement. As stipulated by WRC regulations, the car is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged, direct injection engine producing more than 300 hp.

Toyota says the Yaris WRC’s chassis has been developed using advanced simulation, testing and production techniques. The automaker has also announced that it has chosen Frenchman Eric Camilli as the first member of a junior driver development scheme, designed to nurture the Toyota rally stars of the future.

Camilli will be joined by Stéphane Sarrazin, winner of last year’s Tour de Corse and a racer in Toyota’s FIA World Endurance Championship team, and Sebastian Lindholm. Toyota’s development program will include several European WRC events, with different surfaces. However, the driver lineup for the 2017 season hasn’t been announced yet.

Toyota’s 2017 WRC return will come 18 years after its final WRC rally in 1999. That season marked the end of more than 25 years’ continuous rally activity at TMG, which began life as Andersson Motorsport, named after the company’s founder, the late Ove Andersson, and which competed in the WRC as Toyota Team Europe.

During that time the team achieved 43 wins, with iconic cars such as the Celica Twin-cam Turbo and GT-Four and the Corolla WRC. The line-up of legendary drivers included Carlos Sainz, Juha Kankkunen and Didier Auriol.
