It's a boxer 6, not a V6. Competitively speaking, the six in the legacy is just pathetic.

It seems like that's what Subaru is content with--sell cars based on the fact they are reliable, have AWD and get good gas mileage. If you are looking for and AWD family sedan, the Fusion and new 200 are the only other choices, and the Fusion's mpg is far behind.

This is why the Tribeca is such a failure--there are lots of other better choices in that category if you want AWD.

I just would have thought with the BRZ, they would have tried something a little more bold for such an important category of car, and try and branch out from their loyalist customer base.

hah, of course, boxer 6 :-)... it was way late in the night.

As to the numbers - 256 hp and 247 lb-ft seems fine for the class, it is not a luxury sports sedan.

Also consider that Porsche, like Subaru, uses a boxer flat-six design in its most expensive cars.

How so? That's only 12 horsepower and 1 less lb-ft of torque than the Camry 3.5, which is generally considered quite competitive. I definitely don't consider the Camry V6 to be pathetic.

^ yeah but that's out of 2.7 liters vs the 3.6 of the Subaru. The 3.4 boxer engine has 315/330hp S/GTS on the Boxster

The days of the Legacy GT have gone unfortunately. The mistake was well 1. the lack of sport appeal and 2. only offering a stick. Offer the stick for the enthusiast and a CVT for everyone else. I cannot believe how many people are buying the CVT WRX. I would have thought no one would want that....or maybe they would buy a turbo Legacy if it were available.

Displacement doesnt really matter much here. It's like 5.0L in IS-F makes less power than the exact same engine in RC-F.

No sir it's reworked A LOT. They are very different now

Much higher compression (now same as the Lexus LFA) with higher compression pistons, different internals lightened for lower friction for higher revs and higher flow headers for top rpm heavy powerband with a swelling torque like surge (according to Yaguchi san). Probably a shorter stroke and bigger bore. It will rev to redline a lot faster than the V8 in IS-F. Redline at 7400 rpm and probably rev cut off at 7600 - 7750 rpm.

Yaguchi san said that they purposely decided against a flat torque curve in favor of a steeply surging torque curve to give the driver a sense of never ending acceleration. I believe it will feel similar to IS-F till around 5000 - 5500 rpm and then go crazy over 6000 rpm screaming all the way to 7400 - 7750 rpm. The torque curve shape vision is said to be "using mount Fuji ascent for inspiration".

Of course, everyone really wants to know what’s under the hood. You’ll find the same cast-aluminum block that’s now doing business in the IS-F, but everything else about this DOHC 5.0-liter V-8 engine has been revised. Lightweight titanium valves are again matched with strong, forged connecting rods, but there are new cylinder heads that still incorporate variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust cams. The polished crankshaft is smaller in diameter to reduce friction, while the pistons reduce friction as well. Naturally the intake manifold and exhaust headers are new, and the exhaust barks with a sharper, louder note. The dynamometer numbers aren’t yet final, but we’re told that this engine spins faster than before to deliver at least 450 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque.

"A switch to electric phasing on all four cams brings greater variability and precision, and lets the engine borrow the Prius' more efficient Atkinson cycle operation during low-demand cruising conditions."

"The ideal Atkinson cycle captures and compresses an amount of air that, when combusted and expanded throughout the entire power cycle, results in a cylinder pressure that's near atmospheric at the bottom of the piston's stroke, meaning the engine has wrung every bit of energy out of the fuel. Drop the hammer, and those valves shut in time to give you the full 12.3:1 compression (up from 11.8:1) and 5.0 liters of furious power — 480 horses' worth (up substantially from the IS F's 416)."

RC F 5.0 will be more powerful and more efficient than the IS F 5.0

2.7L in Boxster is even MUCH MUCH more different from 3.6L in a moving refrigerator like Legacy.
