Default Mysterious BMW spied, is it the X1 or the FAST?

Looks like an X1

A mysterious BMW prototype has been spied undergoing testing.

While it appears to be the 2015 BMW X1, reports indicate it is actually the FAST (Family Active Sports Tourer). We're not entirely convinced but this prototype appears to have a lower ride height and a revised tailgate. However this could be due to a variety of factors including the removal of body padding and the use of front-wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive.

Regardless, both the FAST and X1 are expected to ride on the UKL platform that underpins the MINI Cooper and BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. As a result engine options could carryover from the latter model and include:
  • A 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol with 136 PS (100 kW) and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque
  • A 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol with 184 PS (135 kW) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque
  • A 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol with 231 PS (170 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque
  • A 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel with 150 PS (110 kW) and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft) of torque
  • A 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel with 184 PS (135 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque

This prototype also sports "Hybrid Test Vehicle" badging so we can also expect an eco-friendly powertrain.

Yep- that's old news. The Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA are both FWD/AWD, it was only a matter of time before BMW followed suit. The X3 will remain RWD/AWD.

I honestly cannot believe how bad the X1 is and the pass it gets. It just comes across as cheap and not worthy of the BMW badge. With the base halogens and trim it really really is bad. However clearly some people don't care at all.

Default Next BMW X1 to offer a third-row seat - report

Could be launched next summer

Our spies have already caught the 2015 / 2016 BMW X1 on numerous occasions but new details are starting to emerge about the entry-level crossover.

According to Automotive News Europe, the model will be smaller than its predecessor when it is launched in June 2016. The crossover is also expected to feature ruggedized styling which will help it look "less like a small station wagon."

While the model will be shorter, the publication is reporting there will be a long-wheelbase variant for China, Russia and the United States. The long-wheelbase model will reportedly have a third row of seats as well as additional luggage capacity.

Default Second generation BMW X1 returns in more revealing spy shots

Click here to view more photos

Front bumper partially revealed

The second generation BMW X1 has been spied undergoing testing in the Death Valley carrying slightly less camouflage.

The entry-level Bavarian crossover has lost some of the front camouflage allowing us to see most of the bumper's design. In some of the attached pics you will notice the front bumper is camouflaged as the pictures were taken after the test driver saw the spy photographer and decided to disguise the revealing areas with screw-in plastic bits.

We can't really tell from these spy pics but it is believed the new X1 will be a tad smaller than today's model and is expected to offer a more rugged exterior styling. Riding on the front-wheel drive UKL platform, the second-gen BMW X1 will reportedly gain a long wheelbase variant with third-row seating and a larger trunk for markets such as United States, China and Russia.

At the beginning of last month we found out from BMW M GmbH's Jörg Bartels they are considering an X1 M to take on the Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG and Audi RS Q3. It's too late now for a high performance version based on the current model so if green-lighted, it will most likely be offered after the second generation's launch allegedly set for June 2016.

Engine lineup will likely be sourced from BMW's first ever front-wheel drive car, the 2-Series Active Tourer, together with a possible plug-in hybrid version combining a 3-cylinder 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. This variant is rumored to offer a combined output of 190 PS (140 kW) and an electric range estimated at 19 miles (30 km).

Default 2016 BMW X1 prototypes spied on a trailer

Will ride on the UKL platform

Several prototypes of the 2016 BMW X1 have been spotted while being transported on a trailer.

The second generation X1 is going to be entirely different than the current model as it will make the switch to the front-wheel drive UKL1 platform that also underpins the new MINIs and 2-Series Active Tourer. In these latest spy shots we take a better look at the headlights and taillights while the model appears to be slightly shorter but on the inside it should be more spacious as a result of a transverse engine layout which will save up a significant amount of space.

BMW will offer at an additional cost an xDrive all-wheel drive system for select engines and chances are there's going to be a long wheelbase version capable of accommodating up to seven people. A previous report indicated BMW has designed the second-gen X1 to look "less like a small station wagon" and instead feature a more rugged styling.

The engines will be borrowed from the aforementioned 2-Series Active Tourer so expect to find a 136 HP & 220 Nm 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine along with an array of 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline & diesel motors with output ranging from 136 HP (100 kW) to 231 HP (170 kW) while torque will vary from 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) to 380 Nm (280 lb-ft). The conventional-powered X1 will likely be joined by a more frugal plug-in hybrid pairing a 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery to provide a combined output of 190 HP (140 kW) and a 19-mile (30 km) electric range.

The X1 represents BMW's entry-level crossover offering but its status might change towards the end of the decade as the Bavarian marque is allegedly working on a smaller and more affordable 1-Series Sport Cross also using the UKL1 platform.

The second generation BMW X1 will probably be unveiled by mid-2015 and go on sale shortly thereafter.

Default New 2016 BMW X1's Fascia Exposed in China?

This could be the most revealing shot of BMW's upcoming, second-generation X1 compact crossover yet.

It was taken in China and shows the front end of the car including the headlamps, fog lamps, a third of the bumper and the alloy wheels. We can't be 100 percent certain, but for what it's worth, the styling matches what we've seen in the most recent spy shots of the next X1 and is similar to the new X4, X5, X6 and the facelifted X3.

The new X1 is based on the same UKL1 underpinnings as the 2-Series Active Tourer and will share its engines and gearboxes too, with entry- and mid-level models taking advantage of the Bavarian firm's frugal 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbos and top-spec cars using 2.0-liter inline-four turbo petrol and diesel units.

Front-wheel drive will come as standard, but you'll be able to get BMW's 'xDrive' all-wheel drive system on higher end models.

The X1 Mk2 is due to go on sale in Europe late next year (it should come to North America in 2016), with a plug-in hybrid version to follow later on.

Default 2016 BMW X1 spied inside and out; M35i version to pack 350 HP?

Click here to view more photos

Plug-in hybrid version planned

The second generation BMW X1 has returned in a new set of up-close spy images ahead of an official reveal likely planned for the second half of the year.

Still heavily camouflaged, the new X1 will adopt an evolutionary design but underneath the skin it will be an entirely different car as it's bound to ride on the UKL1 platform. As a consequence, front-wheel drive will be standard but select versions will be optionally available with an xDrive all-wheel drive system. It might not be that noticeable in the attached photos but the new X1 will be substantially bigger and it will even be offered as a seven-seater (5+2).

The engine lineup will be pretty much borrowed from the MINI and the 2-Active Tourer MPV while a plug-in hybrid version will also be offered likely with the hardware found in the upcoming facelifted 3-Series plug-in hybrid which was spotted yesterday.

According to German media, there's also going to be a range-topping X1 M35i variant which despite its designation will get a four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine developing an estimated 350 HP (257 kW). Set to arrive next year, the hotter crossover will be offered with a standard xDrive system and should carry a rather steep starting price of €55,000.

The regular second-gen BMW X1 will likely premiere in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Default BMW design boss says the 2016 X1 will have sportier styling

BMW's head of design has revealed some new details about the 2016 X1.

Speaking to Auto Express, Karim Habib said the redesigned model will have sportier styling and "more ‘X-like’ proportions." He went on to say the crossover's styling won't alienate current owners and the model will be "very mature" and a "bit more rounded.”

Habib also took the opportunity to confirm the model will ride on the UKL platform that underpins everything from the MINI Cooper to the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. This isn't terribly surprising but at least it's finally official.

While Habib was coy on specifics, he confirmed we'll see an "early version" of the X1 this summer. That's a little vague but it seems to suggest the company will preview the crossover ahead of a Frankfurt debut.

Default Next BMW X1 Takes Shape; Design Boss Says It Will Be More Sporty And Funky

BMW hopes to win the hearts and pockets of compact SUV buyers with its second (and more modern) take on the X1 that we spied testing both on the Nürburgring and in Northern Sweden.

Speaking with UK magazine Autoexpress, BMW's head of design, Karim Habib, said that the new X1 will be funkier to look at and sportier to drive than the outgoing model, despite being based on the German firm's versatile UKL1 front-drive architecture that also offers the option of all-wheel drive.

“The next X1 will be on the new [UKL1] platform," said Habib. "This has been referred to as the front-wheel-drive platform, but actually enables a lot of all-wheel-drive possibilities. We’ve realized that platform allows us proportions that – for small X cars – can give you more ‘X-like’ proportions than the current X1. And in that sense I think it looks sportier because it looks more like an X car.”

Asked by the publication if the new X1's looks are tuned towards a younger crowd, Habib said: "I don’t think it’ll alienate the current X1 drivers, but on the other hand I really do think it’s going to be a very mature product; a bit more rounded."

From the spy pictures of the camouflaged prototypes as well as a couple of sneak peeks from China recently, it seems that the 2016 X1 will have a more streamlined / digestible appearance than the awkwardly designed and proportioned current model that was based on the underpinnings of the E91 3-Series Touring.

Another significant change for the second-generation X1 will take place under the hood where it will stop offering a straight-six engine. Instead, it will borrow the powertrain lineup of the related 2-Series Active Tourer with a range of 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol and diesel mills, all turbocharged, and paired to either 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmissions.

A plug-in hybrid model with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor producing around 190-horses is also believed to be under development, as BMW teased this drivetrain in the original Active Tourer concept in 2012.

The BMW design boss said that we're going to see a prototype version of the new X1 this summer, with the final production model to follow in the coming months.

The standard sound system with 7 loudspeakers provides high quality audio. The optional Harman Kardon HiFi system, complete with 12 loudspeakers and a digital amplifier with 360-watt output, provide an outstanding audio experience while on the road.

Powertrain and driving experience

The second generation BMW X1 uses an all-new powertrain and chassis technology to build systematically on the compact BMW X model's versatile sporting ability in its segment. The newly developed chassis technology, which ensures not only precisely controllable handling, but also noticeably improved ride comfort is another key factor that further enhances agility on the all new BMW X1. Together with the car's low center of gravity, a wide track, short overhangs, optimized weight and the impressive rigidity of the body and chassis, all contribute to lay the foundation for a driving experience familiar to BMW drivers but without parallel in the class.

Highest power in it's class

The all new BMW X1 will be available from launch with an all-new 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo engine featuring a twin-tailpipe design that draws further attention to the sporty character of the all new BMW X1. The BMW X1 xDrive28i features BMW's new modular BMW EfficientDynamics engine, a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder unit with a TwinScroll turbocharger, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve lift, and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. This powerful engine develops 228 hp at 5,000 rpm, representing the highest power output in the entry model class and thanks to BMW's EfficientDynamics technology. The peak torque of 258 lb-ft, which is available between 1,250 rpm and 4,500 rpm ensures once again that the driving torque is effortlessly and instantly delivered for a dynamic and agile driving experience. Its instantaneous pulling power enables acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. The new BMW X1 xDrive28i CO2 emissions stand at 152– 49 grams per kilometer (in the EU test cycle, depending on the tire format specified). US EPA mileage estimates will be available closer to launch.

Flexible, quick to respond and more efficient than ever: the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system in the new BMW X1

The compact, low-weight and efficient all-wheel-drive system distributes the engine's power between the front and rear axle exactly as the situation requires – at all times. Working closely with DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) allows the system to act preemptively to counteract any tendency on the car's towards oversteer or understeer. The BMW xDrive system therefore ensures excellent traction, optimized directional stability and enhanced cornering dynamics in all weather and road conditions. Furthermore, the combination of the DSC system and xDrive also includes Hill Descent Control.

The xDrive system of the all new BMW X1 consists of a single-speed bevel gear and a rear-axle drive unit with an electrohydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch than controls longitudinal torque distribution. The two are connected by a two-piece drive shaft. When required, the multi-plate clutch – with the help of an electrohydraulic pump – diverts up to 100 percent of the engine's power to the rear wheels. It does so within fractions of a second and unnoticed by the driver. The DSC system keeps the pump's control unit constantly supplied with important data for analyzing the driving situation. The data includes the vehicle's speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering lock, wheel-speed, pitch, accelerator position and the Driving Dynamic Control and DSC settings. This information is used to determine – and instantly generate – the ideal power split between the front and rear wheels, seamlessly and flexibly.

A recipe for enthralling agility: sophisticated chassis technology

The chassis technology of the original X1 has been totally redeveloped for the new model with aluminum wheel hubs, as well as axle carriers and control arms made from high-strength steel, reduce weight and increase the rigidity of the front axle, which in turn helps to ensure an agile turn-in response and direction-changing precision. The rear axle also employs a high proportion of high-strength steels. Tube-shaped anti-roll bars at the front and rear axle, innovative axle mounting and specially tuned elastokinematics contribute to the agility and ride comfort of the all new BMW X1, as do the connection of the dampers to the body via sophisticated three-way support mounts.

The all new BMW X1 is equipped with standard Servotronic speed-sensitive steering assistance. This system allows parking and turning maneuvers to be completed safely and comfortably with little steering effort, and at higher speeds drivers can also benefit from steering precision and straight line stability as the steering effort is increased just the right amount.

The Driving Dynamic Control switch on the center console allows the driver to give the car's set-up an even sportier, more comfort-oriented or efficiency-optimized character. Calling up COMFORT, SPORT or ECO PRO mode at the touch of a button adapts the responses of the accelerator pedal and steering as well as shift characteristics of the automatic transmission are also adjusted if the relevant equipment has been specified.

The Dynamic Stability Control stability system includes features such as the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Brake Assist system, Brake Fade Compensation, Brake Drying Braking and Start-Off Assistant and Performance Control. When DSC is deactivated, an electronic locking function for the front axle differential – known as Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) – comes into play. In tight corners the system brakes a spinning wheel as required and ensures power is diverted to the other wheel.

The enhanced functional effectiveness of all powertrain components, intelligent energy management, the rigorous application of BMW Lightweight technology and far-reaching measures designed to optimize aerodynamics all play a role in enhancing the efficiency of the all new, second generation BMW X1. The innovations developed under the BMW EfficientDynamics umbrella delivers greater driving pleasure.

Optimized exterior design

The all new BMW X1 also has smooth underbody paneling, air deflectors on the front wheel arches and vertical aeroblades, which form a unit with the roof spoiler to channel the airflow around the rear of the car to best effect. The Air Curtains integrated into the outer air intakes channel the onrushing air precisely behind the front fenders causing it to hang over the wheels like a curtain and thus reduce turbulence.

Engine, gearbox and BMW xDrive: lower weight, improved efficiency

The engine in the BMW X1 xDrive28i benefits from the latest incarnation of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with TwinScroll turbocharger and the most recently updated generation of VALVETRONIC. This latest 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine incorporates aluminum crankcase and cylinder head, forged steel crankshafts with an integrated balance shaft drive, low-weight pistons, forged connecting rods, friction-reduced cylinder coatings and map-controlled oil pumps.

With the reduced weight and enhanced internal efficiency, the new 8-speed Steptronic transmission also helps to optimize efficiency. The reduced converter slip of the new automatic transmission cuts energy losses, and its wider gear spread keeps revs lower at higher vehicle speeds contributing to the reduced emissions.

The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system developed for the new BMW X1 is considerably lighter with powertrain losses that are reduced by 30 percent in normal driving situations .The improved functional effectiveness of the new rear differential also helps to deliver a particularly efficient all-wheel-drive experience.

Intelligent energy management, ECO PRO mode with coasting function

The BMW EfficientDynamics technology employed in the new BMW X1 includes intelligent energy management. Brake Energy Regeneration enables extremely efficient power generation for the on-board power supply. The Electric Power Steering and on-demand fuel and coolant pumps work with maximum efficiency.

ECO PRO mode – activated via the Driving Dynamics Control switch – also allows drivers of new BMW X1 to make use of the coasting function. At speeds between 30-100 mph, the powertrain is disengaged when the driver takes his or her foot off the accelerator. Further efficiency gains have been achieved with items including reduced-friction wheel bearings.

BMW EfficientLightweight technology ensuring efficiency

The enhanced functional effectiveness of all powertrain components, intelligent energy management, BMW Lightweight technology and measures designed to optimize aerodynamics all play a role in ensuring that the new BMW X1 it is significantly more efficient. The innovations developed under the BMW EfficientDynamics banner form an overall package that delivers greater and more efficient driving pleasure.

An intelligent mix of materials for the body structure and chassis components of the new BMW X1 allows increased agility, lower vibrations and enhanced safety to be combined with optimized vehicle weight. The targeted use of hot-stamped, high and ultra-high tensile steels reduces the weight of the X1 yet also significantly improves torsional rigidity and strength. Contributing to the Lightweight construction of the BMW X1, components like the hood, the bumper supports and wheel hubs – among other areas of the car – are made of aluminum.

The weight of the chassis has been reduced by the deployment of components such as tube-shaped anti-roll bars, output shafts and damper piston rods, not to mention the increased use of aluminum. The integrated BMW EfficientLightweight concept also contains solutions for construction details, such as the production of steel with optimized material strength – in the form of tailored rolled blanks – for the front bulkhead and B-pillar support beams.

BMW ConnectedDrive: Progress through intelligent connectivity

The second generation BMW X1 also brings significant advances in the field of intelligent connectivity over its predecessor. The new selection of options designed to optimize comfort; safety and the use of infotainment functions, such as the Head-Up Display, take their cues from those available from other BMW Sports Activity Vehicles.
