Why do dealers do this?

Why do they customize cars?
Easy mark-up. Charge the guest who knows nothing about mods or specialities, call it a one-off or special edition and boom easy money.
I've encountered a #7/10 Hawaiian 'Aloha' Edition 2IS before.. Dealership simply put a nice metal placard with those words attached to the console below the shifter

I saw an LS with a chrome wrap and I fell out laughing. I almost pissed myself from how stupid it looked and how much the mark up was. The more I work around other professionals I do find that the guys with the money really have no idea whats up with cars.

Things are way worse in Cadillac land. The company, Vogue, made those fake convertible tops, yellow and whitewall tires, big grills, custom wheels, gold trim, etc for your 80's or 90's Deville. All of that is dealer installed accesories, very profitable for the dealers.
This stuff was real popular with the retirement set who has kind of died off or doesn't drive anymore. Only problem is that company never went away or changed its business model. I'm suprised GM hasn't put their foot down, both in that crap looks like ***** on newer Cadillacs and that they want a younger buyer.

I was in a Caddy dealership last week doing the $100 test drive and they had a new XTS on the floor with this look. Don't know if it was Vogue or not but the same thing only black with a tan roof. I'm sure Caddy execs would cringe knowing the target buyer they are after these days.

i worked at a chevy dealer in tempe, AZ for over 3 years. They always maintained a fleet up vehicles, especially trucks and Tahoes, loaded with crap from the aftermarket department. And for the most part they never had much trouble selling these vehicles to the rich clueless citizens of areas like Paradise Valley and Scottsdale. Players from the Suns (current and prior at the time) frequented there buying these.

These things are hard enough to sell without putting this kind of stuff on them.
