The lighter weight is great, as is the engine though I am sad to see that 4.4L Yamaha V8 go away. 8-Speed is always welcome, and I bet the XC90 will be one of the first with Apple CarPlay. Wrapped up in some sexy sheetmetal like the XC60 and we'll have ourselves a winner. About darn time!

The vehicle will be offered with a seven-seat configuration along with a gear lever manufactured from crystal glass by Swedish glass maker Orrefors. In addition, it will also boast diamond-cut controls for the volume and start/stop.
The all-new Volvo XC90 will combine soft leather upholstery with wood trim, aluminum inserts and other upscale materials while the instrument cluster appears to be fully digital. A four-zone climate control system will be offered along with "state-of-the-art" voice recognition and Apple's CarPlay system integration. The third row of seats will be able to carry passengers that are up to 1.7 meters tall and each passenger inside will have its own stowage space.
Volvo has announced the next-gen XC90 will be fully revealed in August, with production set to kick off early next year at the Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, Sweden.

love the materials inside... lots of leather and real wood... which is awesome.
Big pad does not look great and overall it is too minimalist for me - but thats what they went for, famous swedish minimalism.
overall, very luxurious... i hope it sells a ton.

And we are likely to see same sort of problems as we are seeing with Sync/MyFord Touch, Cadillac Cue, etc. -- the fact that touchscreens and swipe interfaces may look good but are not well-suited to use in cars.

Keep in mind that this is going to be one of the first (and maybe the first) production deployment of the Apple CarPlay platform, so this may very well avoid the issues with the other systems you highlight.
