Default BMW recalling all 2000-06 3 Series models over airbags in US, 1.6M globally

As a Precaution, BMW to Replace Passenger-side Front Airbags in Model Year 2000-06 3 Series Vehicles.

Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – July 16, 2014 – 7:00am EDT/4:00am PDT ... BMW announced today that it has informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the company's intent to voluntarily recall all model year 2000 – 2006 BMW 3 Series vehicles, produced between May 1999 and August 2006, to replace the passenger-side front airbag as part of a worldwide recall. Potential problems with the airbag inflator which may rupture in vehicles produced by other manufacturers using similar systems from the same supplier have become evident in rare cases. BMW is not aware of a case involving a BMW vehicle. The replacement campaign is a voluntary precautionary measure that aims at minimizing the risk of faulty airbag activation. The number of potentially affected vehicles in the US is approximately 574,000.

This is a voluntary extension of the recall campaign announced in May 2013. At that time, the supplier stated a production period during which potentially faulty airbag inflators were installed in passenger-side front airbags. Following this, BMW recalled 42,000 3 Series vehicles in the US. The supplier has now extended the production period.

In order to ensure maximum safety of our customers, BMW has decided to replace the passenger-side front airbags in the vehicles from the suggested production period, and additionally as a voluntary precautionary measure, the passenger-side front airbags in all model year 2000 – 2006 BMW 3 Series vehicles equipped with this airbag module. The 42,000 units recalled in May 2013 are excluded from the current replacement campaign.

BMW will notify customers with potentially affected vehicles will be informed by mail. Customers with questions should contact BMW Customer Relations at 1-800-525-7417 or email customer.relations@bmwna.com.

As a precautionary measure, BMW is replacing the passenger airbags in models of the 3 Series pre-predecessor generation.

Munich. BMW is replacing the passenger airbags on 1.6 million 3 Series vehicles (pre-predecessor generation E46) produced between 05/1999 and 8/2006. Potential problems with gas generators that may rupture in vehicles produced by our competitors using similar systems from the same supplier have become evident in rare cases. BMW is not aware of a case involving a BMW vehicle. The replacement campaign is a voluntary precautionary measure that aims at minimising the risk of faulty airbag activation.

Formally speaking, it is a voluntary extension of last year's recall campaign. At that time, the supplier stated a production period during which potentially faulty gas generators were installed in passenger airbags. Following this, BMW recalled 240 000 3 Series vehicles (E46) of the pre-predecessor generation. The supplier has now extended the production period.

In order to ensure maximum safety of our customers, BMW has decided to replace the passenger airbags in the vehicles from the suggested production period, and additionally, as a voluntary precautionary measure, the passenger airbags in all BMW 3 Series models (E46) of the pre-predecessor generation equipped with this airbag module. The 240 000 E46 units already recalled worldwide last year are excluded from the current replacement campaign.

The customers affected will be informed by BMW. It goes without saying that the costs of the quality measure will be borne by BMW. The rectification of the problem will take about 1 hour.

Default Cadillac issues stop-sale on recalled CTS, SRX

Stop Sale issued

General Motors has issued a stop-sale order on the Cadillac CTS and SRX, both of which were recalled late last month. Why the stop-sale after all this time? Well, um, GM apparently doesn't know how to fix them.

The stop-sale covers all used Cadillac CTS sedans, coupes and wagons from model years 2003 to 2013, as well as new 2014 coupes and wagons. The SRX crossover stop-sale, meanwhile, only covers used vehicles from model years 2004 to 2006.

Automotive News reached out to GM spokesperson Alan Adler, who told the news pub that the company's engineers were "looking at one common solution" for the affected vehicles, although "they don't have it yet."

GM recalled the Cadillacs as part of an enormous 8.4-million-unit recall on June 30. The CTS and SRX were – like the overwhelming majority of vehicles (some 8.2 million units) – recalled due an issue with the ignition. The key in affected vehicles can rotate out of the run position if jostled, much like an earlier recall for the Chevrolet Camaro.

Default GM announces 6 recalls covering nearly 720k cars

Official Press:

GM Announces Six Recalls for Varying Safety Issues

DETROIT – General Motors today announced six safety recalls covering 717,950 recent model vehicles in the U.S.

"These recalls signify how we've enhanced our approach to safety," said Jeff Boyer, vice president, Global Vehicle Safety. "We are bringing greater rigor and discipline to our analysis and decision making. If we identify an issue – large or small – that might affect the safety of our customers, we will act decisively."

The recalls cover:

414,333 2011-2012 model year Chevrolet Camaro; 2010-2012 model year Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain; 2011-2012 Buick Regal and LaCrosse; and 2010-2012 Cadillac SRX models in the U.S. equipped with power height adjustable driver or front passenger seat structures. In these vehicles, the bolt that secures the height adjuster actuator may become loose or fall out. If the bolt falls out, the seat will move up and down freely because it is no longer attached at the height adjuster. The vehicles are safe to drive, but customers should not use the power height adjustable feature until dealers can replace the height adjuster bolt. GM is aware of one crash and three injuries but no fatalities related to this condition.

124,008 model year 2014 Chevrolet Caprice, 2014 Chevrolet SS, 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado LD and HD, 2013-2014 Cadillac ATS, 2014 Cadillac CTS, 2014 Cadillac ELR; 2013-2014 Buick Encore; and 2014-2015 GMC Sierra LD and HD vehicles because certain vehicles may have an incomplete weld on the seat hook bracket assembly. A loss of power to a laser welding machine may have resulted in an incomplete weld, according to data collected from the machine between July 2013 and January 2014. Dealers will inspect the weld. If it is sufficient, no further action is necessary. If it is insufficient, dealers will replace the lower seat track at no charge. Less than 1 percent of welds are expected to require seat track replacement. GM is unaware of any crashes or injuries as a result of this issue.

120,426 2011-2013 model year Buick Regal and 2013 model year Chevrolet Malibus equipped with front turn signals that use two bulbs in each front turn signal. While the driver would get a rapidly flashing turn signal arrow in the instrument cluster if both bulbs in one turn signal were burned out; if only one bulb on either side burns out, there would be no signal to the driver. Dealers will reprogram the body control module to fix the condition. GM knows of no crashes, injuries or complaints related to this issue.

57,242 2014 Chevrolet Impalas equipped with belt-drive electric power steering. On certain vehicles, customers may experience reduced or no power steering assist at start-up or while driving due to a poor electrical ground connection to the Power Steering Control Module. If power steering is lost, a warning message is displayed on the Driver Information Center and a chime sounds. Steering control can be maintained because the vehicle will revert to manual steering mode, but would require greater driver effort particularly at low vehicle speeds. Paint may have seeped behind the nut on the power steering control module ground stud. Dealers will inspect and clean paint from behind the ground nut, re-torque the nut and update the power steering control module software at no charge. GM is aware of one crash but no injuries or fatalities related to this condition.

1,919 2014-2015 Chevrolet Sparks imported from Korea that were assembled with a lower control arm bolt not fastened to specification. The condition could result in noise from the front suspension and separation of the lower control arm from the steering knuckle while driving resulting in loss of steering control. Dealers will inspect the left and right hand lower control arm attaching bolts to assure they are tightened to specification. GM knows of no crashes, injuries or fatalities related to this condition.

22 2015 model year Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon/Yukon Denali vehicles in the U.S. In these vehicles, the roof carriers may have been attached with the wrong retaining nuts, resulting in holes or tears in the roof rail air bags if they deploy. Eight of these vehicles are in dealer stock and will be repaired before being sold.

Default Chrysler recalling hundreds of thousands of Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commander SUVs

Statement: Ignition-Switch Performance
July 22, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -
Chrysler Group LLC will recall an undetermined number of older-model SUVs in connection with an investigation of ignition-switch performance.

Engineers are working to develop a remedy and Chrysler is committing now to conduct a recall out of an abundance of caution.

Chrysler Group is unaware of any related injuries. The Company is aware of a single reported accident and a relatively small number of complaints involving 0.015 percent of the subject vehicle population.

Preliminary investigation suggests an outside force, usually attributed to contact with the driver's knee, may move ignition keys from the "on" position in certain model-year 2006-2007 Jeep Commander and 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. Such an occurrence may cause engine stall, reducing braking power and making steering more difficult. Safety features such as frontal airbags may also be disabled.

The Company expects to identify affected customers and advise them by mid-September when they may schedule service, the cost of which will be borne by Chrysler Group. This timing complies with regulations governing recalls and owner notification.

The precise number of affected vehicles will be determined by the investigation. Approximately 792,300 are implicated – 649,900 in the U.S.; 28,800 in Canada; 12,800 in Mexico and 100,800 outside of the NAFTA region. The Commander is no longer in production and the Grand Cherokee has since been completely redesigned; newer models are not subject to the recall.

Owners of model-year 2006-2007 Jeep Commanders and 2005-2007 Grand Cherokees are advised to assure there is clearance between their knees and the keys. As a further precaution, they are advised to remove all items from their key rings, leaving only their ignition keys.

Concerned customers may also call Chrysler Group's Customer Information Center at 1-800-853-1403.

###

Statement: Shock Inspection/Replacement
July 22, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Chrysler Group is recalling an estimated 21,000 vehicles to inspect and, if necessary, replace the shocks and/or struts.

Chrysler Group is staging the campaign to identify vehicles that may have been assembled using a shipment of shocks and struts that do not meet the Company's quality standards. Accordingly, the components may break free from their mounts, which could potentially lead to reduced shock damping and possible loss of vehicle control.

The issue was identified by a supplier. Chrysler Group is unaware of any related injuries, accidents or complaints.

Affected are certain 2014 Ram 1500 pickups, 2015 Jeep Cherokee SUVs and 2015 Chrysler 200 sedans assembled within a 16-day period ending June 6 of 2014.

An estimated 14,300 vehicles are in the U.S.; 5,300 are in Canada; 160 are in the Mexico and 2,000 are outside the NAFTA region.

Chrysler Group will contact affected customers and advise them when service is available. All costs related to the campaign will be borne by the Company.

Customers with additional questions may call Chrysler Group's Customer Information Center at 1-800-853-1403.

Default Hyundai recalls 883k Sonatas over detaching shift cable

RECALL Subject : Transmission Shift Cable Detachment/Rollaway Risk
Report Receipt Date: JUL 18, 2014
NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V434000
Component(s):
Potential Number of Units Affected: 883,000
Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company

SUMMARY:
Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, through May 29, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable may detach from from the shift lever pin.

CONSEQUENCE:
If the transmission shift cable detaches, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver parks the vehicle, despite selecting the 'PARK' position, the transmission may not be in 'PARK.' If the vehicle is not in the 'PARK' position and the parking brake is not applied, there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.

REMEDY:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, repair the connection between the shift cable and shift lever, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 123.

Default Hyundai recalls over 419k vehicles in three campaigns

Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company

SUMMARY:
Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model Year 2001-2006 Santa Fe vehicles manufactured from March 31, 2000, through February 15, 2006, that are registered and operated, or which were originally sold and registered, in the following 20 "salt belt" states and the District of Columbia: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The affected vehicles may experience front coil spring corrosion from road salt, causing the coil spring to fracture and make contact with the tire.

CONSEQUENCE:
If the front coil spring fractures due to corrosion it could cause the coil spring to make contact with the tire, possibly puncturing the tire and increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

REMEDY:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and if necessary replace the coil spring, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by the end of September 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 124.

NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company

SUMMARY:
Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011 Sonata vehicles manufactured from December 11, 2009, through September 1, 2010. The affected vehicles may experience a brake fluid leak from the two brake lines that connect the brake system's master cylinder to the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) due to insufficient seal between the inner brake hose and metal brake line fitting.

CONSEQUENCE:
If the brake lines leak brake sufficient fluid, the brake warning lamp in the instrument cluster will illuminate and longer stopping distance will be required, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

REMEDY:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake hoses with a revised service part, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by the end of September 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 122.

NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company

SUMMARY:
Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 Veracruz vehicles manufactured from December 26, 2006, through July 24, 2012. The affected vehicles may experience an oil leak from the front cylinder bank valve cover gasket. If there is a sufficient amount of oil dropped onto the alternator, the alternator will be damaged causing the charging system to become inoperative.

CONSEQUENCE:
If the alternator is damaged, the charging system warning lamp in the instrument cluster will illuminate, and the engine will lose power and the vehicle will eventually stop operating while being driven. An unexpected failure of motive power while driving increases the risk of a crash.

REMEDY:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect/repair or replace the alternator and the front valve cover gasket, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by the end of September 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 121.

Details

Manufacturer: Harley-Davidson Motor Company

SUMMARY:
Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Harley-Davidson) is recalling certain model year 2014.5 FXDL Dyna Low Rider motorcycles manufactured January 6, 2014, through June 19, 2014. In the affected motorcycles, certain optional performance electronic control module calibrations may allow higher engine rpms that could result in engine vibrations that cause the ignition switch to move from the "IGN" (ignition on) to "ACC" (accessory only) position, which will shut the engine off.

CONSEQUENCE:
If the vibration causes the ignition switch to move to the accessory only position, the motorcycle would stall while riding, increasing the risk of a crash.

REMEDY:
Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will replace the engine mount bracket assembly and ignition switch ****, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by the end of July 2014. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464.

Default Saturn Vue ignition switch leads to new group of GM recalls totaling 312k

GM Announces Recalls

DETROIT – General Motors announced the following recalls today:

202,115 model year 2002-2004 Saturn VUEs because the ignition key can possibly be removed when the vehicle is not in the off position. GM is aware of two crashes and one injury potentially related to the issue.

Dealers will inspect for key pullout or key binding, and, if necessary, replace the ignition cylinder and key set at no charge to customers.

Until recall repairs have been performed, it is very important before exiting the vehicle for customers to make sure the vehicle is in "Park" or in the case of a manual transmission to put the transmission into reverse gear and set the parking brake.

48,059 model year 2013 Cadillac ATS four-door sedans and 2013 Buick Encore vehicles in the U.S. In some of these vehicles, the front outboard lapbelt pretensioner cables will retract upon deployment to pull in seat belt webbing, but may not lock, allowing the cable and the retracted webbing to return to their original length under occupant loading. As a result, there may be a potential of increased occupant movement in certain accidents. Dealers will replace both front outboard lap belt pretensioners. GM is not aware of any crashes or injuries as a result of this issue, which was discovered during frontal crash testing. A stop sale is in effect for unsold models at dealerships until repairs have been made,

14,940 model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Impala sedans in the U.S. On some LT and LTZ models equipped with a front console storage compartment, the inertia latch on the compartment door may not engage in the event of a rear collision and the front console compartment door may open. Dealers will replace the console door storage compartment door inertia latch. Because this is a non-compliance with a federal motor vehicle safety standard, GM has ordered dealers to hold unsold models of these vehicles until the repair can be made. GM knows of no crashes or injuries related to this condition.

1,968 model year 2009-2010 Chevrolet Aveo and 2009 model year Pontiac G3 vehicles for a brake fluid issue that could lead to longer brake pedal travel and/or reduced braking performance. This was originally a Customer Satisfaction Program issued in 2012 and has been reclassified as a safety recall. GM knows of no crashes or injuries associated with the condition.

1,919 model year 2014 Chevrolet Spark models for left and right lower control arm attaching bolts that may not be tightened to specification. GM has informed owners to have their vehicles transported to Chevrolet dealerships, where they will be inspect the attaching bolts to be sure they are tightened to specification. GM knows of no crashes or injuries related to this issue.

Default Volkswagen recalls 150,000 Tiguans for fuel bubbles

VOLKSWAGEN ISSUES VOLUNTARY RECALL
Aug 11, 2014

Herndon, VA - Volkswagen considers the safety and satisfaction of its consumers and passengers a top priority. As such, Volkswagen of America today notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it will be issuing a voluntary safety recall affecting the fuel pump on certain 2009-2014 model year Volkswagen Tiguan vehicles.

The recall affects approximately 151,389 model year 2009-2014 Volkswagen Tiguan vehicles. In isolated cases, it is possible that gas bubbles may form in the fuel system when winterized fuel with high vapor pressures is used in warmer areas or during months with higher ambient temperatures or during engine hot soak. The condition occurs when the engine is restarted within a short period of time, before the engine has fully cooled down. When the vehicles affected by this recall have been operated under low load for an extended period of time, deposits may collect and degrade the electrical current flow inside the in-tank fuel pump, thus leading to reduced fuel pump performance and pressure. If these conditions occur in combination, the fuel pump may not be able to overcome the vapor pressure under low loads and can potentially result in a vehicle stall directly after engine start. Potentially, this could lead to a crash.

To fix the issue, authorized Volkswagen dealers will install revised Electronic Control Module (ECM) software on all affected vehicles. This will be performed free of charge to the customer.

No accidents or injuries related to this issue have been reported. Volkswagen will notify all owners of affected vehicles and will instruct them to arrange for an appointment with an authorized Volkswagen dealer.
