Default VW announces recall of 26,000 2014 models with 1.8T engines

VOLKSWAGEN ISSUES VOLUNTARY RECALL
Apr 21, 2014

Herndon, VA (April 21, 2014) - Volkswagen considers the safety and satisfaction of its consumers and passengers as a top priority. As such, Volkswagen of America today notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it will be issuing a voluntary safety recall affecting the automatic transmission oil cooler on certain 2014 model year Volkswagen vehicles with a 1.8T engine and torque-converter automatic transmission.

The recall affects 26,452 model year 2014 Volkswagen Jetta, Passat, Beetle and Beetle Convertible vehicles produced between February 1, 2014 and April 6, 2014. Of the 26,452 affected vehicles, 1,655 are customer cars. Due to a supplier material change during the production of the transmission oil cooler, the O-ring seals in affected vehicles are out of specification. If the O-rings do not completely seal between the oil cooler and transmission, a fluid leak may result.

To fix the issue, Volkswagen will replace the defective O-ring with a new one, at no cost to the customer. No fires, accidents, injuries or vehicle fires have been reported. Volkswagen will notify all owners of affected vehicles and will instruct them to arrange for an appointment with an authorized Volkswagen dealer.

Default Dodge Viper recall requires small-handed mechanics

It has been over a year since Chrysler first announced its recall of 3,660 2003-2004 Dodge Vipers because the airbag could suddenly deploy. The repairs are finally beginning, and it appears to be a nightmare for mechanics.

According to the automaker's filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the airbag control module can fail, which causes the bag or the seatbelt pre-tensioner to deploy without warning. It took over a year to design the new parts, according to The New York Times. However, Chrysler finally has a new "jumper harness with an in-line diode filter circuit" ready to fix the problem.

The dilemma now moves to the mechanics who have to actually install the part. A 47-step guide from Chrysler explains that the procedure should take about two hours. It's not an easy job, though. Most of the dashboard has to be taken apart, and the instructions include this helpful bit of advice: "Installing the jumper harness and filter box into position is not an easy task. Patience, perseverance, and small hands are required." We wish the best of luck to them. The fix comes just in time for the Vipers to enjoy the summer sun.

Default Mercedes recalling 284k C-Class models for taillight failure

Statement From Mercedes-Benz

We are working very together with our NHTSA colleagues on this topic. Daimler AG has become aware through its worldwide product observation that on some model year 2008-2011 C-Class vehicles (204 platform*), the contact between tail lamp bulb carrier and tail lamp connector has deteriorated. The contact deterioration may lead from dimmed tail lamps to, in the worst case, a loss of tail lamp functions. In this case, the driver will immediately be informed by dedicated warning messages in the instrument cluster.

RECALL Subject : Tail Lamp Dimming or Failure
Report Receipt Date: APR 11, 2014
NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V177000

Component(s):
Potential Number of Units Affected: 252,867
Vehicle MakeModelModel Year(s)
MERCEDES BENZ C300 2008-2011 MERCEDES BENZ C350 2008-2011 MERCEDES BENZ C63 2008-2011
Manufacturer: Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC.

SUMMARY:
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (Mercedes) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 C300, C300 4Matic, C350, and C63 AMG vehicles manufactured January 26, 2007, through July 13, 2011. In the affected vehicles, a poor electrical ground connection may result in the dimming or failure of the tail lights.

CONSEQUENCE:
Dimming or failure of the tail lights reduces the ability to warn other motorists of the driver's intentions of stopping or turning, increasing the risk of a crash.

REMEDY:
Mercedes will notify owners, and dealers will replace the bulb holders if not previously updated and replace any corroded connectors, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. Owners will be sent an interim notification in June 2014. A second letter will be mailed when parts are available, currently expected to be in August or September 2014. Owners may contact Mercedes at 1-800-367-6372.

Default Investigation suggests GM slow to recall 1.2M CUVs over airbags

Slowly but surely, General Motors is learning quite a few lessons from its recent ignition-switch recall fiasco. A recent timeline submitted by the company to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed that it took six years to issue a recent recall on several crossovers.

In March, GM recalled 1.18 million CUVs because the side impact airbag system could fail, including some 2008-2013 Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia models, as well as 2009-2013 Chevrolet Traverse (pictured above) and 2008-2010 Saturn Outlook models. The announcement was timed with GM CEO Mary Barra's video apology about the ignition switch recall.

The NHTSA document suggests that GM initially hoped to avoid a recall on the CUVs. On March 13, the company first wanted to cover the vehicles under a customer satisfaction campaign. These aren't monitored by the government, according to Automotive News. The next day, it updated the repair to a full recall after a call with the government regulator.

The recall wasn't the first indication of the airbag problem either. According to GM's timeline, in June 2008, it noticed "a significant increase in warranty claims for an illuminated airbag service light." An investigation showed the side airbag wires' connectors could wear and corrode, which would increase resistance in the wires. The additional resistance would first illuminate the "Service Air Bag" warning light, but at a high enough level, the airbags may no longer deploy. The automaker issued the first service bulletin about the possibility of failing side impact airbags on the CUVs in November 2008. More airbag-related bulletins were issued for subsequent model years of the crossovers.

According to Automotive News, there were no reported crashes or injuries related to the faulty side impact airbags in the affected models, and GM believed the service bulletins covered the problem. However, the company appeared reluctant to issue a recall for a problem that it knew about for years. With the automaker's vehicle safety under such scrutiny, it's a poor message to send.

Default Honda recalling 25k Odyssey minivans over side curtain airbags

Statement by American Honda regarding side curtain airbag recall: 2014 Honda Odyssey

Honda will voluntarily recall 24,889 model-year 2014 Odyssey vehicles in the United States to replace the shorting coupler, an electrical component in the side curtain airbag system, free of charge. During assembly of the electrical coupler for the side curtain airbag on the passenger's side of the vehicle, it is possible that the shorting terminal, which is used to prevent deployment of the airbag before it is assembled into the vehicle, may have been damaged. A damaged shorting terminal may illuminate the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) indicator as well as prevent the side curtain airbag from deploying during a crash, increasing the risk of injury. No crashes or injuries have been reported related to this issue, which was discovered through warranty repairs.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage all owners that purchased an affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda. Mailed notification to customers will begin on May 16, 2014. In addition to contacting customers by mail, at that time, owners of these vehicles will be able to determine if their vehicles require repair by going to www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (800) 999-1009, and selecting option 4

Default GM calling in 56k Saturn Aura sedans over shift cables

RECALL Subject : Transmission Shift Cable may Fracture/Rollaway
Report Receipt Date: APR 30, 2014
NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V224000
Component(s):
Potential Number of Units Affected: 56,214
Manufacturer: General Motors LLC

SUMMARY:
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through October 31, 2007, and equipped with a four speed automatic transmission. In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable may fracture.

Default 2014 Chevy Malibu, Buick LaCrosse recalled over brake mix-up

The recall madness over at General Motors isn't letting up anytime soon, as evidenced by this latest call-back of 8,208 Chevrolet Malibu and Buick LaCrosse sedans. For those keeping track, this is the fifth recall that GM has announced in the past two weeks, not to mention the massive ignition-switch issue from earlier this year.

GM issued a statement saying these sedans are being recalled due to "possible reduced braking performance," according to Automotive News. The problem? Rear brake rotors may have accidentally been installed in the front brake assembly. And since both cars use more robust braking systems up front than out back, braking power could be reduced, increasing the risk of a crash.

Automotive News reports that, of the over 8,000 cars being recalled, about 1,700 are currently in the hands of customers, while the others are still in dealer inventory. GM is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to this problem. All of the affected vehicles are from the 2014 model year.

GM has issued a stop-sale, effective May 1, on the cars still at dealers. After the front braking assemblies have been inspected and repaired (if necessary), dealers will be allowed to sell these vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not yet issued a formal announcement about the recall.

Default Ford recalling nearly 700k Escape CUVs, C-Max hybrids over two separate safety issues

Poor Escape. Ever since its launch in 2012, Ford's small CUV has been the subject of many, many, many recalls. And today, The Detroit News is reporting that Ford is adding two more recalls to the 2013-14 model year Escape's permanent record, one of them also involves the C-Max hybrid hatchback.

The first recall, covering 692,500 Escape and C-Max vehicles, is due to a software glitch that could cause the airbags – specifically, the safety canopy – to not deploy in a timely fashion during rollover crashes. According to the News, Ford says no crashes or injuries have been reported in relation to this problem.

The second recall, covering 692,700 Escapes, is related to the door handles. The News reports that the exterior door handles could open while the vehicle is in motion, and could also fail to latch properly. Once again, no crashes or injuries have occurred because of this. The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration has not issued an official notice on either recall as of this writing.

If that math doesn't seem to add up, it's important to note that all of the Escapes involved in the airbag recall are also included in the door handle issue. Might as well just fix 'em all at once, right?

The Detroit News reports that, in the airbag recall, dealers will reprogram the vehicles' restraint control modules. For the second recall, dealers will inspect all four of the Escapes' door handles and reposition them if needed.
