Im thinking about a x5 as a replacement for my ML500
I test drove the then brand new F10 2011 528i with the up-tuned naturally aspirated Inline-6 with 240hp/230tq, and the ZF 8-speed automatic. The engine and transmission were indeed a gem, but unfortunately that's the only thing I liked about the car. Everything else felt like luxo barge. Quiet, isolated, NO steering feel at all, etc. I just couldn't connect with it. Night and day difference between that and the 335i I ended up buying. If you're looking at things like interior refinement or technology then sure, the newer cars are definitely better, but much worse to actually drive. There's just a connected to the road feel that you always had in the older cars that's completely absent on all of the newer ones, and it's just not something I could live with. It's a shame, because the cars really are great in all other respects. I'd rather buy an Audi or a Benz now if I bought another German car. Hopefully BMW will sort this out on the next gen cars.

supercharged and not turbocharged, so no lag and better throttle response

The 4.0T is actually turbocharged, not supercharged. Audi is confusing people with just using T to designate all their various forced induction systems.

It was slow last night so I took the 2013 S6 we got in trade out for a spin. The acceleration and lightning quick shifts were intoxicating

Partially true. Depends on trim level. The Q50 starts at 38-39K, The A6 and CTS start in the low 40s...not very far off.

Infiniti has their Q70 (former M37M56) that could have been included, but has also been pretty uncompetitive in the segment.

I understand you write some reviews MMarshall, but a lot of times your understanding of segments and models seems to be a bit off
I'll respect your opinion (I don't mind someone questioning my judgement...otherwise I wouldn't post), but the Q70 is actually in a higher price-bracket.....it starts in the high 40s. It is considered a flagship, where the other cars in the test aren't. That's why I didn't include it.

Lincoln MKS is the larger more premium sedan, that even then, wouldn't be in this segment, and is on its way out. Volvo S80 has been uncompetitive for some time now, and is also due for a major change, no need to include it in this test.

I agree with this post. The Q70 starts around the same price as the E350 and it was clearly made to handle that segment.

The MKS/S80/ES350 group are in a different class.

Again, you're wrong. The Q70 is priced DIRECTLY IN LINE with the heart of the E/5/GS/A6/etc. for V6 and up engines. Maybe we could argue that it shouldn't be priced directly with them, and that's what hurts it, but Q70 is not a "flagship" that competes against the LS/S-Class/A8/7 series. Is that who you're saying the Q70 competes against??

Yes, the Q70 it is Infiniti's current "flagship" after they ditched their Q45, but it competes (albeit not very well) in the heart of the "midsize" premium sedan segment.

The CTS starts at $45K and the A6 starts at $43K, both are on paper, I'm fairly certain you'd be hard pressed to find vehicles at that price point stocked on dealer lots. Whereas the bulk of Q50's on dealer lots will top out somewhere in the low to mid $40K's. Again, look at the avg as tested prices in the article!
