This is why I'm a big fan of start stop systems. I let my car "heat up" to get into a warm car rather than drive for 10 min in the cold. warming the engine is secondary. With me leaving for work at 6am I saw some of the low # on record(-20F) I wouldn't consider not warming up the car. Also how does idling cause engine damage?

In its most simple form, it's wear and tear on an engine that's not going anywhere.
In a more complex form, factors such as excessive heat, lack of air circulation and cooling, vibration, wear and tear, etc. all add to "damage" or aging the engine.

i hate people who do this in front of a store for minutes in the parking lot. Like it's so hard to move their *** outside and wait. Or in the driveway while waiting for the meal to get ready, that's a 10 min wait ...but USA is build like that on waste and consumerism. If the gas was more expensive they'll be more considerate.

When we were in Italy for Christmas 2012, I rented a Mercedes C Class. It had this system, but they didn't tell me when I rented it. When I got to my first red light the engine shut off. I actually turned the key to the off position and restarted the engine. I thought "oh damn, I am going to have trouble with this car already". I was about to return it to the Sixt agency when I realized the car had this eco mode.
It actually was pretty neat. I got terrific mileage, and that was a good savings with diesel fuel prices there. The only thing I wondered about is in the long term what it did to your battery and starter motor.

turning the car off to avoid idling isn't practical or comfortable in very cold, very hot, or humid conditions.
but sure, if i know i won't freeze, fry, or sweat a lot, i'll turn if off if i'm stopped.

hate seeing people just sitting in their car, engine running looking at their phone or something for minutes on end.
In hong kong, buses, trucks, and taxis would keep their engine running because they needed the AC to be on in the hot summers. A law was past about two years ago that said they must switch off ignition when they pull into their parking/loading/waiting areas

My DD burns one half-pint of fuel per HOUR when idling. It therefore gets turned off when I exit and lock the doors, and very rarely otherwise. This also means it gets a 10 minute warmup when, as nearly constantly for the past 2 months, temperatures in the morning are below freezing. This has two major benefits:
1. My *** doesn't freeze for the first 10 minutes of the trip
2. The act of pulling out of the driveway doesn't sound like pistons will soon be puncturing the hood.
