McLAREN AUTOMOTIVE ANNOUNCES NORTH AMERICAN PRICING AHEAD OF NEW YORK AUTO SHOW DEBUT

- New McLaren 650S Coupé and Spider now available in North America
- US pricing for 650S Coupé starts at USD $265,500 and USD $280,225 for the 650S Spider
- Canadian pricing for 650S Coupé and Spider is CAD $287,000 and CAD $305,500 respectively
- McLaren 650S to make US debut during the 2014 New York Auto Show

Following the global debut at the Geneva Auto Show, the McLaren 650S Coupé and 650S Spider are now on sale in the US and Canada across all 15 retail locations (13 in the US, two in Canada). Of these 15, McLaren Atlanta, McLaren Scottsdale, McLaren Washington DC and McLaren Vancouver were opened in the past six months and reflect the tremendous growth and success of McLaren in North America.

As the first example of the McLaren 650S rolled off the line at the state-of-the-art McLaren Production Centre in Woking, McLaren Automotive has released performance numbers and confirmed pricing as part of the global debut at the 84th International Geneva Motor Show.

In the US, pricing for the 2015 McLaren 650S Coupé starts at USD $265,500 and USD $280,225 for the 650S Spider in the US, while in Canada, pricing is CAD $287,000 and CAD $305,500 respectively.

The latest addition to the McLaren range accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds, and can reach 100 mph in just 5.7 seconds. The standing quarter mile takes 10.5 seconds, and top speed is 207 mph in Coupé form. This performance puts the latest model from McLaren 0.6 sec faster over the standing quarter mile than the iconic McLaren F1 road car, and a full second quicker to 124 mph, underlining its performance focus.

Optimized aerodynamics ensure that the performance of the McLaren 650S is accessible and increases driver engagement. Enhanced handling, high-speed balance and steering turn-in result from improved levels of downforce. 'Driving excitement is at the absolute heart of the McLaren 650S,' explains Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive. 'Of course the performance figures are important, and they help boost excitement. But they're only part of the story. This is a car that's about feel as well as measurement.'

Despite these impressive performance figures, more akin to a stripped out road racer, the McLaren 650S boasts a high level of luxury specification. Standard equipment includes carbon ceramic brakes that sit behind unique '650' lightweight alloy wheels and shod with Pirelli P Zero™ Corsa tyres. Inside amenities provide a fully-trimmed cabin in lightweight Alcantara, IRIS satellite navigation with Bluetooth connectivity, SIRIUS satellite radio in North America, wireless tethering, audio streaming and voice control all fitted as standard. Enhanced levels of optional specification are also offered, including fixed-back carbon racing seats, based on the lightweight design found in the McLaren P1™, an electric steering column adjustment assists ingress and egress, a rear parking camera and extended carbon fiber throughout the interior.

'The McLaren 650S represents 50 years of road and racing car know-how,' comments Mike Flewitt. 'Everything we've learnt from the 12C and the McLaren P1™ has gone into this car, creating a car with the widest breadth of capabilities of any production supercar. It's also a new benchmark in pure driving excitement.'

The McLaren 650S will make its US debut at an offsite location during the New York International Auto Show next month. Invited media will be the first to see the McLaren 650S on April 16-17 at a to-be-announced venue adjacent to Jacob Javitz Center.

Default First Drive: 2015 McLaren 650S Spider

It seems like only yesterday that we enjoyed a mad dash in McLaren's wild P1 hybrid wallet-breaker. Now here we are, already back with the Brits, this time in on the great roads of southern Spain and at Ascari Race Resort as McLaren launches what has already become its most important seller, the 650S. Available as both a $265,500 coupe and as a $280,225 roadster, we will focus hard here on the Spider since it's the greater conversation piece and will account for nearly ninety percent of North American deliveries. The car's very first US customers are taking delivery as you read this.

Though the 650S essentially takes what was offered in the original MP4-12C, pumps it all up and refines it nicely, this new member of the McLaren clan looks more like a P1, albeit one costing over three-quarters of a million dollars less than the real deal. Truth be told, 12C production ceased in January to allow 650S production to ramp up, and the new car will therefore serve as McLaren's entry-level model until its rumored Porsche 911- and Aston Martin V8 Vantage-rival comes along.

There were a handful of key things we hoped for in this new 650S: more power and torque than the 12C, a more finely tuned ride and handling balance no matter the H (handling) and P (powertrain) setting selected, more character from the bi-turbo V8's exhaust and a flashier, less banal design.

We're pleased to report that all of these issues have been addressed.

The 650S' naked chassis and powertrain are nearly identical to those of the 12C at first glance, but variations do exist. The entire top portion of the dry-sump M838T 3.8-liter V8, built up by engine kings Ricardo in the UK, has been reengineered for more urgency and less friction between moving parts. These developments lead to microscopically improved fuel efficiency and lower CO2 numbers. Similarly, the seven-speed Seamless Shift Gearbox (SSG) from Graziano is the same unit, but its software has been reprogrammed for better shift behavior both in-town and at full chat come track days.

Whereas on the 12C, Pirelli PZeros have been standard-issue tires with Corsa versions as an option, the 650S jumps straight to the latter's higher-performance asymmetric treads. As to braking, there is a similar change, with the optional Akebono carbon-ceramic brakes of the 12C coming standard on the 650S.

With that new-look, P1-style front end gobbling up more air, at 150 miles per hour, downforce is increased by 40 percent over the 12C's less extravagant nose. Larger engine-cooling side scoops are now visibly rendered in carbon fiber – our test car was equipped with the full carbon-look exterior detailing. To compensate for this much higher downforce that allows quicker lap times, the ProActive Chassis Control suspension scheme has come in for tweaking, too.

The revisited system on the 650S employs wider-diameter dampers with bigger pistons, plus an accumulator attached to the damper body that manages hydraulics – a setup similar to that of the P1. The result is much tighter control of all dynamic movements under all conditions. Add a higher spring rate at the rear to liven up directional changes – something that at times on the 12C felt almost soft even though you knew the hardware was working – and the driver simply senses more faithful feedback. All that leads to improved confidence in every corner and transitional moment.

We gave this new 650S a proper thrashing around the 3.4-mile Ascari circuit. The sensation fostered by the 616-horsepower 12C – especially when pushed on a track – was always that the car would go about its business methodically and competently, but with little flair and a slight lack of solid feedback. The ProActive chassis worked so hard on the 12C that it ended up giving the driver a less-than-complete idea of exactly how fast they were going, as well as how fast they could go. The dampers and springs and steering also came off as a little under-communicative. It all worked very effectively, but a progressive crispness and a more talkative chassis was needed in order to more regularly knock our socks off the way the Ferrari 458 Italia and Porsche 911 GT3 have routinely managed.

This 650S goes a long way toward addressing these shortfalls. Now at 641 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque (up nine percent) and incorporating all of the aforementioned technical upgrades, the 650S is the Ferrari 458 Speciale of 12Cs, if you follow us. Its chassis and gearshifts are exactly as they should be now, whether you have the powertrain and handling set to Normal, Sport, or Track. We tested all three calibrations on both twisting roads and on countless laps of Ascari, and everything is quicker yet smoother, with more feedback. Most importantly, the 650S delivers these improvements with a much clearer sense that the driver is at the heart of the experience, not the technology. Steering turn-in has been especially improved on the 650S' electro-hydraulic rack, and the already exceptional brake-steer system (which slows the inside rear wheel in corners to curb understeer) has been carried over from the 12C.

The difference brought about by the stiffer Pirelli PZero Corsa tires and Formula-One-quality carbon ceramic brakes cannot be overstated. With more time on the track and in these ideal dry conditions, we would have loved to have eagerly explored this exceptional equipment further. In another very positive development, McLaren has also altered the 650S' braking software to make pedal feel and engagement more linear and less like an on/off switch.

With the P dial set to Track mode, when at 5,000 rpm or greater, there's more torque delivered in every gear as you upshift under hard throttle. This is being called "inertia push" – as we will see on the Lamborghini Huracán – and on Ascari's three key straighter sections of track, it's an emotional development, similar to what the P1's IPAS button performs through that car's electric motor. Only here, there are no extra buttons to push to get it. The same is true of the Drag Recovery System that works at high speeds to decrease the drag provided by the rear AirBrake wing. It's an easier-to-use, P1-inspired set of technological tricks on a smaller budget.

We also prefer the updated, P1-influenced styling penned by design director Frank Stephenson and his team. There is much more of a fanciful spirit going on – the 12C is a svelte thing, but it also is a bit anonymously styled, particularly up front. The 650S is decidedly more interesting to look at. It's also fun to watch the top retract, as can be seen above.

Sitting in the 650S also provides a much more personalized cabin than that of the short-lived 12C. There are now more options available and the exterior gets four dedicated colors. This particular orange – McLaren's third – is named Tarocco after a blood orange in Spanish, and there's a new blue, a gray, and a green as well. Our test car featured available race seating covered in synthetic ultrasuede that, among other things, will have you religiously dieting in a jiffy.

They might be tight, but this optional furniture is just the thing for testing out the 650S' impressive performance numbers. The official estimate of 2.9 seconds to 60 mph feels conservative, and this new Mac will storm all the way up to 204.

The 12C's exhaust sound saw countless unfortunate comments hurled its way during its brief life. Revised for this model, it's sort of better now, but again, it's really heard largely outside – inside, this car is still too quiet. Even in this Spider configuration with roof open and the little rear window down, it doesn't take a tunnel to reveal that the 650S doesn't have the operatic lungs of a Ferrari. To be fair, though, McLaren doesn't seem to be trying to compete on this front. The British racing outfit has at least engineered a two-cylinder cutoff on downshifts that announces your approach to any Spanish village with festive, uppity throttle blips.

For the Spider's roof system, count seventeen seconds to either open or close the fairly simple design. Nothing has changed here from the 12C Spider, and we still think this is the best mechanism of its type on the market. Leisurely rich folk on the go can raise or lower the roof at speeds up to 19 mph, too. Ahh, the joys of slow-speed multitasking.

As on the 12C Spider, the torsional and bending rigidity for the 650S Spider is identical to the coupe thanks to the stiffness of its aluminum and carbon-fiber chassis and passenger tub. It's just one more reason to not feel obliged to go for the coupe bodystyle if you want to do track days.

The 650S offers up a comprehensive re-think of Mac's 12C that took the world by storm just a few years ago. This is progress of a variety that we can really appreciate, as can the buyers. After all, ninety percent of McLaren's American customers can't be wrong.

seem like more of the same (good) stuff. Dynamically the cars are amazing but styling like that will not end up as a poster on a kids wall

Default Onboard Video of McLaren 650S Drifted Around Ascari by Chris Harris

The new McLaren 650S looks like a car with lots of poise and control; it’s not a chore to drive it quickly and neither is drifting it, as Chris Harris illustrates in the video below.

In the onboard footage of Harris going around the Ascari track in Spain behind the wheel of new supercar, we can see just how smoothly the car breaks traction and enters powerslides. There’s no snap, no drama but still lots and lots of sideways action.

It’s still apparent that the driver has a place in this car, and there’s no substitute for razor-sharp reflexes and advanced knowledge of car control on the limit – the wheel needs quite a bit of fine adjusting in order for progress to be smooth, though it’s clearly well past the stage of being an analog experience.

Upgrades also compatible with 12C

McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has taken the wraps of a unique 650S Coupe which combines an "optimized aerodynamic performance" with a "more dramatic appearance."

McLaren's bespoke division has introduced the 650S Coupe "design concept" which highlights some of the new aerodynamic bits and pieces that are also compatible with the 650S Spider, 12C Coupe and 12C Spider. Some of the new components include a redesigned rear diffuser and side blades manufactured from carbon fiber.

The vehicle showcased here wears an Agrigan Black exterior paint scheme consisting of a metallic black hue and a deep ruby red metallic flake. MSO says under direct sunlight the special paint changes its color and contrasts the satin-finished carbon fiber body parts.

Other components made from this lightweight material include the front splitter, air intakes, along with a new GT3-like rear bumper featuring a carbon fiber center area. Rounding off the list of exterior changes are the satin black 650S alloy wheels wrapped around in Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires.

For the interior, McLaren Special Operations has prepared fixed-back carbon fiber seats derived from those fitted inside the P1 which are 15 kg lighter and have been covered in carbon black leather.

Already available for order is the aforementioned rear diffuser for 7,245 GBP while the side blades cost 5,114 GBP.

Default McLaren 650S hits Monza during private event [video]

Deep V8 tone

During the “Pure McLaren Driving Experience” private trackday at Monza race track, the British manufacturer brought together a selection of McLaren 650S’.

YouTuber NM2255, an Italian car lover with a big passion for filming, spotted the new supercar starting up its 3.8-liter twin turbo V8 engine and doing some revs, accelerations and fly-bys on the circuit.

Made to "provide the ultimate in driver engagement on the road and on the race track," the 650S was presented during the Geneva Motor Show back in March. The coupe accelerates from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.0 seconds, while the 0-200 km/h (0-124 mph) sprint takes 8.4 seconds. Top speed is rated at 333 km/h (207 mph).

Default McLaren 650S GT3 goes official at Goodwood FoS

Click here to view more photos

12C GT3 owners can upgrade

McLaren has taken the wraps off the 650S GT3 today at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed, following last week's teaser announcement.

Based on the road-going 650S Coupe, the track-only GT3 derivative is a follow-up to the 12C GT3 but with a more aggressive body kit made mostly from carbon fiber and including larger air intakes providing optimized cooling. Carbon fiber was also used for the large fixed wing at the back where there's also a splitter sharing the same material.

McLaren's engineers have updated the suspension geometry and installed wider tracks along with a FIA-approved rollcage which is lighter and more comfortable than its predecessor as it provides the driver with more leg and headroom. Also inside the cabin is a bespoke steering wheel while behind it is a specially developed digital dash display.

Existing 12C GT3 owners have the possibility of upgrading their cars to the 650S GT3 specification which shares the same V8 3.8-liter twin-turbo engine. Until the 2015 season, McLaren plans on manufacturing and delivering 15 units of the 650S GT3 together with 15 upgrade packages.

Cool looking Livery though Gulf is my favorite. It's so cool the headlights were shapped like the company logo.
