Default 2016 Toyota Tundra to Come With Cummins Diesel

The next-generation Toyota Tundra will receive a version of the same Cummins diesel powerplant as the next Nissan Titan pickup.

The Tundra will utilize a 5.0-liter turbo-diesel V8 from Cummins to power its next-generation Tundra, which is likely to make its debut in 2016 according to Ward’s Auto. It’s unclear how or whether the engines will differ in specifications, but the Nissan unit is expected to make over 300 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque.

According to an inside source, the Cummins diesel could be a placeholder for the Japanese automaker. Toyota was working on an in-house Tundra diesel engine until the market collapsed in 2008. Depending on demand for the the Cummins-powered model, Toyota will weigh the possibility of reviving the project.

Previously we had reported that Tundra diesel models were already undergoing testing.

Until you see word from Toyota, I would find this information highly suspect.

original article:

According to a WardsAuto forecast, the Tundra will get a 5.0L turbodiesel V-8 from engine-maker Cummins, likely when the next-generation Tundra debuts in 2016.

This is a version of the same engine competitor Nissan will use in its next-generation Titan fullsize truck, set to debut next year in the U.S.

How different the engine will be from the Titan Cummins diesel is unclear. That mill is expected to produce more than 300 hp and more than 500 lb.-ft. (678 Nm) of torque in the Nissan truck.

A source tells WardsAuto the Cummins diesel possibly is a placeholder for Toyota, as the automaker had been working on an in-house Tundra diesel engine in 2007 and 2008.

I would rather have Toyota build their own diesel and not have to worry about someone else's quality.

iirc they did build their own 2.2L in Europe (poland factory). The IS220d and as of 2010 IS200d, it was a disater in terms of reliability. Cummins is at least a reputable brand, they could do worse

Toyota has 5 series of diesels engines, not only AD in Lexus... and while it is disaster for sure, they got rated better than all of the german diesels for reliability... food for thought :-)

That's true, I was only thinking of that terrible one in the IS. The LC, Prado and Hilux? among others have sturdy diesel engines. Wonder why they wouldn't just those those then?

Because of vastly different emissions standards!!! On top of that is the fact that diesel is pricier than gas in our country.

Toyota isn't going to invest in the engineering resources to do this for a truck that barely makes a scratch in the full size market. I know I know, chicken vs egg logic. And Toyota corporate doesn't like blackbox'ing things to suppliers like Cummins.
