There are 1.4l for Yaris, Auris and Corolla, 2.0l for Auris, Verso, Rav4, Avensis, 2.2l for Verso, Rav4, Avensis, and 2.2l 180hp for old IS, Avensis, Rav4, Verso, etc. Then there is one 3.0l truck series for Prado, another one 2.5l for Hilux and LC200 gets V8 version :-).

Probably 5 distinctive engine series in there.

As on of the Ward's article's pointed out, in 2017 new emissions rules will mean redesign for current engines, and before that it makes no sense to have 2017 engines due to cost. It is unlikely that Toyota will make one engine design to sell 10,000/year.

I was partly joking

Didn't I hear something a while ago about Hino (owned by Toyota and makes diesel trucks) designing a diesel engine for the Tundra? Guess that got shelved?

I don't mind Cummins at all. Their engines are damn good.

I would agree with that to a certain extent but Cummins has been doing diesels for a long time and they're quite respected in that arena. This maybe Toyota's way of getting accepted in the diesel market; which would be to partner with someone that can build/have access to a diesel engine builder that is well respected. While in the background they're building their own with all that they can learn through this partnership.

Would love to see Toyota put a diesel in the Taco, 4Runner, GX460, LX570, Landcruiser, Tundra, and Sequoia. I think it's going be less likely to see a diesel in the Lexus brand but I think the Taco, Tundra, 4Runner, and Landcruiser would be able to sell them.
