Thumbs down German car industry rocked by vote rigging (ADAC car of the year awards falsified)

"We're very sorry," added Obermair, who initially scolded media for reporting doubts about ADAC's vote counting. "This strikes at the very core of our existence. Our goal is to restore our credibility."

ADAC, Europe's largest and most influential car club, has over 18 million members. Its Yellow Angel award can give a boost to sales in a competitive domestic market.

ADAC conceded that Ramstetter, the editor of ADAC's popular ADAC Motorwelt magazine, that calls itself Europe's biggest monthly with 18 million readers, massively inflated the results of votes, saying 34,299 motorists had voted for the Golf as Germany's favorite car when it had only been 3,409 votes.

ADAC, whose car test reports are followed closely in a country with a deep affinity for its automobiles, said the order of the results was not tampered with -- only the total number of votes.

Sad day for credibility of German media... what we have always known due to reviews where only certain brands win, now has been confirmed.

:-(

LOL, as if commercial media ever had any credibility to begin with. Doesn't surprise me one bit, everyone does that.

Looks to me like a simple typo...perhaps an honest, unintended one. Anyone can make a human error/mistake. That's not an excuse to toss any stones at them.

means only one thing: Not many people were interested in voting. But they had to show that people are truly interested and did participate. Sad.

I see what you are saying but it was most likely done like that so they could say it was all due to a typo

you dont announce typo to the world and stand by it for few weeks until it catches up with you :-). They admitted rigging the results and fired one of their directors.

ADAC is largest moto club in Europe, it has 19 million members. They have quality surveys, car tests, even crash tests... they are huge and people in Germany/Austria look for it for advice... it is bigger there than CR is in the USA because it is government backed.

They had affair in 2005 with crash tests on Dacia, new cheap brand, where it was found that they damaged the wheel of the car after the crash to make it appear worse.
