BMW's new coupé-syled crossover contender, the X4, is a new entry to the sports SUV market. Can the new upstart really rival the Porsche Macan, which has been received as one of the best compact SUVs ever? Steve Sutcliffe finds out.

Spending $100,000 on an SUV is becoming an increasingly common occurrence in Australia, but never before has there been so much choice, particularly if the ‘S’ in SUV means anything to you.

The new Porsche Macan and BMW X4 to take on the existing Range Rover Evoque and Audi SQ5. All four SUVs are all-wheel drive and showcase just how good an SUV can be for the driving enthusiast in all of us.

Putting aside the Range Rover Evoque as it’s cheaper, four-cylinder-only and getting on a bit, and Audi’s SQ5 as it’s diesel-only, we’re pitting a Porsche Macan S petrol against a top-spec BMW X4 35i.

Porsche is such a dominating brand. I was never a Porsche fan but some of the new products they're coming out with definitely creates attraction.

The Macan is Porsche's new compact crossover. It delivers performance and luxury that Porsches are famous for in addition to day-to-day practicality.

Default New Porsche Macan URSA Tune by Russia's TopCar

Click here to view more photos

After many months of preparation and work, Russian tuning firm TopCar is ready to share its Porsche Macan URSA aftermarket program.

Set to be officially revealed at this week's Moscow International Motor show 2014 (August 27 to September 7), TopCar's URSA project for the Macan SUV consists exclusively of exterior styling parts at this stage.

There are two editions to choose from, one with carbon fiber detailing for €16,080 (about $21,300 or GBP 12,800) and a painted one for €12,680 (~$16,800 or GBP 10,100).

Both versions include a wide bodykit comprising of a new front bumper with a lip spoiler, hood vents, side skirts, wheel arch extensions, front fender air ducts, rear bumper and diffuser, plus lower and upper tailgate spoilers.

The alloy wheels pictured in the display car are not included, but due to the wide body kit, you will probably have to get spacers and/or a new set of rims and tires.

Very aggressive but it's only a body kit yes? No performance additions?

We pit two very different cars from Porsche's range against each other in one of our famous track battles! Which comes out on top?

Porsche's range is bigger than ever, and we're testing two of the newest and most exciting models - the Macan Turbo and Cayman GTS. The cars couldn't be more different - the Macan a sports SUV, whereas the Cayman GTS is a more powerful version of the Cayman S. They both cost under £60,000, but how different are they on track?

The Cayman GTS has 340bhp and 380NM of torque. It'll hit 60mph in 4.6 seconds and weighs just 1,345kg. When it comes to price, it's going to set you back just over £55,000. The Macan Turbo has 400bhp and 550NM of torque, but it tips the scales at 1,925kg and will cost you just over £59,000, but it'll still hit 60mph in just 4.8 seconds.

The Cayman GTS is an absolute delight to drive around a circuit and set an impressive lap time of 1:10.5 seconds. That's 1.2 seconds faster than a Cayman S. How does the Macan Turbo compare?

The end result wasn't much of a surprise - the Cayman showed a clean pair of heels to the Macan around the test track, but there's more to these cars than racing against a stopwatch. The Cayman GTS is simply one of the finest cars I've ever driven on a circuit. It's beautifully balanced and an absolute joy to drive.

The Macan isn't as at its best when it's chasing a lap time, but it's got lots of grip and a very smooth, powerful and refined engine, and it's one of the best sports SUVs you can buy. So, in our minds, both of these Porsches are winners.

Interesting Comparison and I agree with both bit and hoovey!

I've seen a lot of people who are looking to purchase a Macan and are comparing it to 5 Serires, GS's and other fine sports sedans and just cannot make up their mind because of varying personal needs and factors. People have gone both ways with their picks but much like the academy awards, it says a lot about a sporty SUV just to be considered in the running and have made it to the final 2!

Macan pretty much has the reflexes of those sedans but the utility of its hatchy nature

I don't have to tell you that though L
