November 2013 Sales Thread
DETROIT (AP) — Black Friday deals and the long Thanksgiving weekend lured buyers into U.S. automobile showrooms, and analysts say the surge should boost November sales above a strong month last year.
Analysts estimate that last month's car and truck sales rose from 3.6 percent to as high as 6.3 percent over November of 2012, which at the time was the best month in nearly five years. All automakers report monthly sales figures on Tuesday. Some analysts couched their estimates, however, saying they were counting on a strong finish to the month on Black Friday and Saturday.
Indications are sales finished strongly. Three dealers contacted by The Associated Press all said they did well after Thanksgiving, boosting their monthly totals over November of last year.
"Black Friday did give us a lift," said Bill Perkins, president of two Chevrolet dealerships in the Detroit suburbs of Taylor and Eastpointe, Mich. "A lot of people were out shopping over the weekend."
Normally November is a lackluster month for auto sales, tucked between strong demand in October and holiday discounts in December. But automakers, particularly Ford and General Motors, offered deals this year that brought out buyers, according to the Kelley Blue Book auto website.
The month-end deals were enough to overcome last year's sales, which were artificially boosted by Superstorm Sandy. The giant East Coast storm hit at the end of October, pushing some sales into November, said Alec Gutierrez, senior analyst for KBB. He's predicting sales of 1.19 million vehicles for last month, a 3.6 percent increase from a year ago and an annual rate of 15.6 million.
Others, including the TrueCar.com auto pricing site, expect larger increases. TrueCar estimates sales hit 1.21 million, up 6.3 percent from a year ago. Senior Analyst Jesse Toprak said the auto industry is on track to reach sales of nearly 15.7 million vehicles this year, up about 8 percent over 2012.
The Edmunds.com auto site expects a 4.7 percent sales increase to 1.2 million vehicles, led by Chrysler, General Motors and Toyota.
General Motors, which owns Chevrolet, ran ads during the weekend promoting deals on the Equinox and Traverse crossover SUVs, and those were supplemented by ads from Detroit-area dealers, Perkins said.
Chrysler dealers were buoyed by the arrival of the Jeep Cherokee small crossover SUV, which finally gave them a competitive product in that fast-growing part of the market, said David Kelleher, owner of a Chrysler dealership in Glen Mills, Pa., outside Philadelphia.
Kelleher said his dealership sold 21 Cherokees last month, helping to reach its best November sales since he bought it eight years ago.
Kelley Blue Book predicted that small crossover SUV and pickup truck sales will lead the market. But the growth in full-size pickup sales is starting to slow below the 20 percent seen through most of the year.
"We are now at a point where we are comparing to sales in late 2012, when the acceleration in pickup truck sales really began," Gutierrez said.

Chicago (AFP) - The US auto industry looked set to post one of its best performances in years as major automakers reported strong gains in November sales Tuesday.
"We feel good about the direction of the economy and our own momentum," GM sales chief Kurt McNeil said.
"The economy is creating jobs and household wealth. Energy costs are dropping and credit is available and affordable. All of this bodes well for future growth."
GM forecast November's sales pace would come in "above" 16 million once all automakers have reported.
That would be up substantially from the 15.2 million pace set in October and could beat the year's current peak of 16.1 million set in August.
The last time the sales pace topped 16 million was in October 2007.

DETROIT – General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) dealers delivered 212,060 vehicles in the United States in November, up 14 percent versus a year ago and the highest November sales in six years. Retail sales were up 19 percent and fleet sales were down 3 percent.
“November sales were strong at all four of our brands, and demand was robust for everything from cars to crossovers to the industry’s newest and best full-size pickups,” said Kurt McNeil, vice president, U.S. sales operations. “The sheer number of award-winning new models we have helped us grow faster than the industry for the second month in a row.”
GM’s product momentum will continue unabated. For example, the all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS, which is building availability, was recently named Motor Trend’s Car of the Year, an Automobile Magazine “All Star” and one of Car and Driver’s 10 Best cars.
Cadillac will also launch an all-new Escalade and the ELR in early 2014. In addition, Chevrolet and GMC are launching all-new heavy-duty pickups and large SUVs in the first quarter. Chevrolet also unveiled the Colorado, its new, highly acclaimed midsize pickup, at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. The Colorado goes on sale in the fall of 2014.
November Sales Highlights (vs. 2012)
Chevrolet sales were up 13 percent and retail deliveries were up 20 percent.
Sales of Chevrolet cars increased 19 percent, with Malibu up 41 percent, Volt up 26 percent, Impala up 20 percent and Camaro up 14 percent. Retail deliveries of the Cruze were up 39 percent and Impala more than doubled.
The Chevrolet Cruze, Equinox and Volt had their best November sales ever.
Sales of the Chevrolet Tahoe were up 23 percent, the Traverse was up 21 percent and the Silverado was up 12 percent.
GMC sales were up 20 percent, with the Sierra up 22 percent and the Acadia crossover up 108 percent, which keeps it on track for its best year ever.
Small business sales were up 38 percent, including a 76-percent increase in pickup deliveries. Commercial fleet deliveries increased 18 percent.
Buick deliveries increased 13 percent and the brand is on track for its best year since 2005. November was Buick’s 19th consecutive month of year-over-year retail sales growth.
Cadillac sales increased 11 percent and retail sales have grown in each of the past 18 months, driven by the success of the new XTS and ATS.
“We feel good about the direction of the economy and our own momentum,” McNeil said. “The economy is creating jobs and household wealth. Energy costs are dropping and credit is available and affordable. All of this bodes well for future growth.”

HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA REPORTS ALL-TIME RECORD NOVEMBER SALES
Hyundai Accent and Santa Fe Sport receive ALG’s award for the highest residual value in their class; both post 40 percent-plus sales gains
Refreshed Elantra family, new Veloster Turbo R-Spec and industry-first 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell launched at the Los Angeles International Auto Show, arriving in showrooms soon
COSTA MESA, Calif., Dec. 3, 2013 – Hyundai Motor America today announced sales for the month of November of 56,005 units, up five percent versus the same period in 2012, representing the best November in company history.
“With inventories being replenished with new and refreshed 2014 product, November was another record month for us,” said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of national sales. “As consumer confidence appears to be on the mend resulting in record sales on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the automotive industry as a whole appears to be making strong strides as the year comes to a close.”
The recent recipients of ALG’s award for the highest residual value in their segments, Santa Fe Sport and Accent, both experienced strong sales gains over last November, with Santa Fe up 43 percent and Accent up 42 percent. Elantra and Equus were both up five percent, with Veloster up six percent.
"We continue to see strong demand across our lineup, with consumer interest especially high for the 2014 model year updates we’ve made to Sonata, Santa Fe, and Tucson,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO. “While we finished November still short of 2014 model year inventory, our plants are literally working 24/7 to restock our dealers with these new models, including the refreshed 2014 Elantra and updated 2014 Veloster, which both arrive in showrooms this month.”
Fleet sales represented 18 percent of total sales in November.
Certified Pre-Owned vehicle sales for the month were 6,118 a gain of 5.7 percent, year-over-year.
