Meet the new World's Largest Dump Truck
Belaz debuted its latest dump truck last month, and the Belarusian company claims it to be the biggest in the world. The 75710 can carry a staggering 496-ton (equivalent to 450 metric tons) payload, and will be used in open mines on temporary roads. To put the size of the truck into perspective, take a look at one of its eight tires, which is twice as tall as an average-size person!
Two 16-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines with a combined capacity of 130 liters power the mining truck, with help from an electromechanical transmission to put the power to the ground. Each engine produces 2,300 horsepower for a combined 4,600 hp, yet that number seems paltry when considering the combined torque rating: 13,738 pound-feet of torque! All that power nets a top speed of just 40 miles per hour, but at least the weight distribution evens out with a full payload. Speaking of full payloads, the truck has a max weight of 893 tons filled to the brim.
Belaz's chief designer for mining vehicles, Leonid Trukhnov, says the 75710 is the first 496-ton mining truck made, and the company is submitting documents to claim a Guinness World Record.

Those are amazing. I have driven in a 400 ton haul truck (the predecessor to this truck) and it was very cool. It's like driving in a small house. You are so high off the ground it is a very strange sensation. When it is filled the truck does move but not that much. There are sensors that tell the driver how full it is and the weight of the load. You can put a whole house in the back. You feel very small when you stand next to it. I believe the tires for the 400 ton were about $50,000 each.

Yea, it was a very cool experience. Google "haul truck accidents" and you will see pictures of when these things roll over pickup trucks and such in mines by accident. Just hope you are not in the pickup when it happens.....
When you are driving in one of these on a mine site the ride is actually very smooth, not what you would expect given the size of the truck and the road condtions. The weight of one of these alone would totally destroy a normal road so they can never be driven on roads, not to mention they are so huge they would take up both lanes and then some. I have seen the tires being hauled on 18 wheel trucks and they have to have wide load signs since they are usually a bit larger than a standard highway lane. While on a mine site you learn very quickly to give these trucks the right of way and stay clear of them or else...
