Jaguar explains why their crossover is called F-Pace, they also considered X-Type and XQ

F-Pace has 'a bit of texture and character to it'

Jaguar design director has shed some light regarding why they chose the F-Pace moniker for the company's first ever crossover.

In an interview with British magazine Auto Express, Jaguar's design director Ian Callum said the initial list of names included about eight candidates, with X-Type being one of them. He was a fan of this moniker but executives within Jaguar Land Rover weren't because of its connection with a defunct model (2009) so they had to pick something else.

Ian Callum says "XQ" was also one of the names analyzed but was dropped because of its similarities with Audi's Q-labeled crossovers and also because Aston Martin uses "Q" for their high-end customization program. Might we add that Infiniti uses QX for their crossovers and SUVs so Jaguar did the right thing by eliminating XQ since it would have created a lot of confusion.

After narrowing down the list to three names, the rather controversial "F-Pace" was selected "because I think it's got a bit of texture and character to it and I think after time people will get used to it", according to Callum. He went on to specify he was reluctant at first about designing a crossover but was "eventually persuaded to do it" and now he has embraced the idea and would actually like to design a second SUV.

Default Jaguar F-Pace spied for the first time wearing a production body

Click here to view more photos

Promises to be a 'family sports car'

The 2016 Jaguar F-Pace has been spied wearing a production body for the first time.

Previewed by the C-X17 concept, the production model has a rectangular grille that is flanked by large air intakes and XF-inspired headlights. The crossover has also a sculpted hood, an upward sweeping shoulder line and a sporty roof. Moving further back, there's wraparound taillights, a dual exhaust system and a tailgate-mounted spoiler.

Our spies couldn't get close enough to snap interior photos but Jaguar has previously said the F-Pace will be a five-seater with class-leading interior space, luxurious interior finishes and cutting-edge technology.

Jaguar has been tight-lipped about specifications but the model is expected to ride on the iQ[Al] platform and feature engines sourced from the entry-level XE sedan. This means we can expect a variety of four-cylinder Ingenium engines and possibly a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that develops 340 bhp (253 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque.

Needs a supercharged V8

Would love to see an R or R-S version, but Land Rover may not be happy about a V8 F-Pace

Default Blimey: X-Type Name Was Considered for Jaguar SUV, Mercifully Dropped

What kind of name is F-Pace anyway? Is the whole Jaguar range going to receive an “F” prefix, like the upcoming SUV, or is it just a one-off for this model?

It will be comforting to learn that things could have been worse. That’s because, as Jaguar design director Ian Callum told Auto Express during the 2015 NAIAS, that at some point, the company was considering the X-Type moniker.

Rings any bells? It was the name of the sub-par saloon and estate that the British brand rolled out in 2001 and axed not a moment too early in 2009, to fight the BMW 3-Series and its likes.

Riding on a modified Mondeo platform, as Jaguar was at the time owned by Ford, it failed miserably and, dare we say it, was worse than the donor model, which was a very competent mainstream car. Even the company itself admitted that this whole project was a mistake.

“Creatively speaking, I had little role in the choice of the F-Pace name, but I was clear on saying it needed to have a reference to sportiness”, said Callum. “We played with the letter X a lot – XQ was one option but we felt Q is too much of an Audi thing, and of course Aston Martin uses Q.”

No Q, then. So, what was next on the menu? “We even toyed with the idea of calling it X-Type, which would have been an obvious one. Had there not been an X-Type in the past, it would have been a good choice. I was brave enough to go for X-Type, but there were a lot of other people who weren’t.”

He divulged that around eight names were put on the table before being short-listed to three, and then the F-Pace moniker was chosen for the production model.

Back to the question in the intro: it appears that in the 1960s, Jaguar run an ad campaign named “Grace, Space and Pace”. Now the F-Pace starts making some kind of sense. When asked if the other two would be used in future Jags, Callum said “it had been a good project and we might do another one. XJ would be F-Grace!”

Default Jaguar reportedly working on an F-Pace EV

Could have a range of approximately 300 miles (483 km)

According to a recent report, Jaguar is developing an electric vehicle which could be based on the F-Pace.

Citing "well-placed industry sources," Autocar is reporting is the model is being created to meet increasingly stringent fuel economy and emissions standards as well as growing demand for electric vehicles.

Little is known about the car itself, but it will reportedly have a range of approximately 300 miles (483 km) and could arrive for the 2018 model year. There is also speculation that the vehicle's powertrain could be shared with an electric Range Rover but nothing is official as of yet.

Default Jaguar F-Pace spied testing in UK

Based on the iQ[Al] platform

A test prototype of the Jaguar F-Pace has been recently caught on camera in the UK.

Spotted near the M42 motorway, the British SUV features a heavy camouflage hiding a sculptured slopping roof line, wraparound taillights and a small spoiler on the tailgate. There’s also and a set of multi-spoke black alloy wheels.

The production F-Pace was announced at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year. “The ultimate practical sports car” will ride on the iQ[Al] platform that also underpins the XE. The high-riding model will also share its engine lineup with the sedan which means we can expect a range of 4-cylinder units and possibly a range-topping 3.0-liter V6 powerplat with 340 bhp (253 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque..

Default More Jaguar F-Pace details revealed

JAGUAR F-PACE: THE ULTIMATE PRACTICAL JAGUAR SPORTS CAR

26/08/15

Double wishbone front and Integral Link rear suspension enable exceptional handling and ride comfort

Outstanding agility delivered by F-TYPE-derived technologies including Torque Vectoring2

Electric power-assisted steering designed to give immediate response and connected feel

Debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September

On sale in 2016

(MAHWAH, N.J.) - August 25, 2015 - Featuring sports-car derived chassis systems and evaluated on the same demanding roads as all other Jaguar vehicles, the new F-PACE will bring new levels of dynamic ability to the brand when it goes on sale in 2016, after debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.

The new F-PACE will reward drivers and passengers alike with a blend of agility and comfort that is unique to the small performance SUV segment; making it the most practical Jaguar sports car ever.

Whether on twisting mountain passes, flowing country roads or high-speed highway cruising1, the new F-PACE delivers responsiveness and precision with the characteristic levels of refinement and composure Jaguar vehicles are known for.

"We haven't made any compromises or exceptions: the new F-PACE had to be a true Jaguar and had to deliver the dynamics DNA. We've tested ride and handling to the limit, and the result is that the new F-PACE is as engaging and rewarding to drive as it is comfortable and quiet. As soon as you get into the vehicle you know immediately that it's a good place to be." - Mike Cross, Chief Engineer of Vehicle Integrity, Jaguar

Developed using the Jaguar Lightweight Aluminum Architecture, the new F-PACE is designed to handle with precision and control without sacrificing ride comfort - it's what makes a Jaguar stand apart from the competition. Taking full advantage of the body structure's inherently high stiffness, the sophisticated double wishbone front suspension and Integral Link rear suspension provide a great starting point; tuned by Jaguar engineers, they make the new F-PACE incredibly responsive, and ensure that the vehicle can handle the impacts, undulations and camber of varying road surfaces.

Incorporating all of the learnings from F-TYPE, the F-PACE features a similar electric power-assisted steering system2 (EPAS) which gives drivers greater feedback and control than hydraulic systems. Every system between the steering wheel and the tire's contact patch are optimized so that the new F-PACE responds immediately to driver input, giving a truly connected feel. Combined with the same torque vectoring by braking technology2 first developed for F-TYPE and incorporating a torque on-demand all-wheel drive system2, the new F-PACE has been designed to deliver outstanding agility in a variety of weather conditions and on varying road surfaces.

The new F-PACE makes its auto show debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show on Tuesday, September 15 at 10:30AM in Hall 5.0, Stand B06.
