Looks brilliant inside and out to me. Would love the opportunity to drive this. Supersport power and handling with GT refinement and trim

Same here. Very unattractive car to me. I never liked the SLS, nor the SLR, nor this. "Melted chocolate frog" is very accurate IMO -

I'm sure it's an incredible drive though!

Default Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster render has a lot of production potential

Decision still pending

The Mercedes-AMG GT has been rendered into a roadster by Theophilus Chin.

A rumor emerged on the eve of the AMG GT's reveal which indicated the model will be sold only with a fixed roof. Apparently, Daimler is afraid an AMG GT Roadster would cannibalize sales of the SL-Class and the upcoming S-Class Convertible. However, things have changed since then as AMG CEO Tobias Moers didn't deny plans of an open-top version but most likely it will take a while until the model will reach the assembly line.

As seen in these renders created by Theophilus Chin, an AMG GT Roadster makes a lot of sense and chances are it will eventually happen taking into account the aforementioned rumor indicated the car is "virtually complete" so what would be the point of doing all that work for nothing?

Until then, several other derivatives of the AMG GT will be launched, including a Black Series and a "nice" variant as described by Moers. There's also going to be a track-only GT3 model coming out in 2016 and set to replace the SLS AMG GT3. In addition, a street-legal GT3 version with more power and less weight is also in the works to compete with the Porsche 911 GT3.

Decent as a roadster too

Sorry but the AMG GT makes me dislike the SL even more now

I have always thought the current SL looked awful. I liked the 03-08 R230 better.

Yes possibly the best looking SL ever, but quality/reliability is not so good.

BTW I doubt they will make a hardtop convertible for the AMG GT even if they decide to make a convertible version, probably ragtop, same for the S class convertible ...

A retractable hard top (just like in the render) would be epic for this car. =)

Gojirra is right. No retractable hard top, not even for the next-gen SL (as plans stand right now). Only the SLK will retain a folding hard top. I say good riddance. Too much weight in the wrong place.

So the next SL will only have a rag top instead? Is it confirmed or just a rumor?

Not confirmed yet, but not a rumor either. Funny thing about this is that since the SL and SLK are on long lifecycles, they won't even be unveiled for another 5 years.
