EDIT: Mercedes is considering not giving the virtually done roadster model the green light so it doesn't completely cannibalize the sales of the SL. The most basic model of the AMG GT will almost definitely be arriving in the lower $100k range.

The SL has a different mission, even in AMG form. It's very heavy, focused on grand touring, and has a folding hard top. This is a much more focused model with handling being paramount. Whether those missions are too close together is completely different discussion. Some more good info: http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/News/Se...ival-unveiled/
I have to give it to Georg Kacher, much of what he reported back in January 2014 came true:

Mercedes-AMG GT gains optional Night Package
Click here to view more photos
Bringing a series of cosmetic tweaks
Following its introduction at the Paris Motor Show, the Mercedes-AMG GT has gained an optional Night Package.
Earlier this year Mercedes-Benz launched night packages for the CLS facelift and new C-Class and now they are doing the same for the AMG GT which as the name suggest brings several bits and pieces featuring a dark theme. For example, the front splitter wears a high gloss black look that has also been applied onto the diamond front grille, air intake grilles and the air outlet grilles on the hood and fenders.
Moreover, the Mercedes-AMG GT Night Package comes equipped with rear tinted glass, two black exhaust pipes, glossy black exterior mirror housings, black tinted windows and a black roof.
The Night Package is available for both versions of the AMG GT but can't be combined with the optional AMG Silver Chrome or AMG Exterior Carbon packages.

Mercedes-AMG GT to stick around for at least two generations
Model will have a seven to eight year lifecycle
AMG CEO Tobias Moers has revealed the AMG GT will become a permanent fixture in their lineup as it will stick around for at least two generations.
In an interview with Motoring, Moers said the car will likely have a seven to eight year lifecycle before the next-generation model is introduced.
The executive also confirmed we can expect a "few" additional variants to be added to lineup. Moers declined to go into specifics but a Black Series variant is all but guaranteed. There could also be a new convertible and a GT3 race car to replace the SLS AMG GT3.
Interestingly, Moers said the model could be equipped with all-wheel drive but there are no plans to do so.
