Spyker B6 Venator Spyder arrives November 2014 at $150,000
Spyker B6 Venator Spyder arrives November 2014 at $150,000
We met up with the well travelled Victor Muller at The Quail gathering at Monterey and talked turkey regarding the re-entry of Spyker production cars in the United States. He was showing off the running prototype of his new B6 Venator Spyder with 375-horsepower supercharged V6.
Although the definitive pricing for these "more accessible" Spykers has yet to be announced, Muller tells us that the target for the new spyder is $150,000, while the previously introduced Venator hardtop will shoot for $140,000. Production numbers for the Venator lineup per year are set currently at 500 for each bodystyle. The United States remains a huge market for Spyker's future, roughly 25 percent of total production, while China will take 25 percent, and the Middle East 25 percent, the rest divied up between Germany, the UK and the rest.
Mr. Muller was less forthcoming on who provides the supercharged V6, though we'd have to think of Audi or Jaguar as likely candidates. (To which spokespeople tell us Audi would be a wrong guess.) Nearly all engineering R&D for the powertrain and chassis is provided by Lotus Engineering, so this could be one fine ride if they let it be. More accessible? Yes. This significantly lower price versus previous overdone Spykers should work wonders, and the execution on the Venators is far simpler and more tasteful than the bejewelled predecessors the Dutch built.
And Muller did give us a scoop of sorts. The Venator family will apparently be built in "one of three current possibilities" in Europe, current hot choices being in the UK and Germany. But definitely not in the Netherlands.
Let us all hope good hopes that the very likeable Viktor M. works all of this effort right. Because we finally like the cars on first glance. North American Venators arrive in November 2014 after starting European deliveries in August 2014.

Pagani debuts first US-spec Huayra at the Quail
Pagani debuts first US-spec Huayra at the Quail

When our own Matt Davis drove the gob-smacking Pagani Huayra in the fall of last year, he mentioned that the supercar would finally be available to upper-crust American customers sometime this summer. True to its word, Pagani has arrived at The Quail this year with a car wrought in bare carbon fiber; a Huayra that is not destined for any one customer, but that will serve as a demonstrator with which to lure those upper-crust dollars. With a probable price tag of $1.2 million, it'll take a healthy bank account balance to put the Pagani in your garage.
For those who can afford the best of the best, though, this Huayra should prove compelling to drive on US roads. The Italian coupe is powered by a brutal, Mercedes-Benz AMG-sourced, biturbo 6.0-liter V12 engine that's good for 720 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers are impressive – as are its run to 62 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 224 mph – but seem absolutely fitting for a vehicle that looks to have driven from the bay of an alien spacecraft. Welcome to the US, and welcome to Earth, Pagani.
Even displayed on a lawn covered in exotic metal, the Huayra stood out here at The Quail.

Though hardly moving into Porsche levels of 50th Anniversary celebrations, Lamborghini is taking its own golden jubilee pretty seriously. The Italian company treated the world to a 50 Anniversario version of the Aventador LP720-4 earlier this year in Shanghai. At this year's swanky show at The Quail during Pebble Beach weekend, Lamborghini is showing off the convertible version of the car, the very sultry Aventador LP 720-4 Roadster 50 Anniversario.
What's more, the company has brought along the anniversary-treated Gallardo LP560-2 50 Anniversario as well, which we officially saw for the first time in China. Hey, a stage full of Lambos is no bad thing in our book.
As the coupe version before it, the 50th Anniversary Aventador has been massaged to make a full-bodied 720 horsepower from its stunning 6.5-liter V12, as well as done up with special edition paint and badging. A subtlety redesigned front splitter will call out the limited run Aventador Roadster to those in the know, too.

There's a way to access the ultra-ritzy Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance that doesn't involve spending $275 on a ticket. It's called the Tour d'Elegance, and it's arguably a better time than the actual show itself.
Scheduled on the Thursday before the Concours, the Tour sees the cars of the show on parade, retracing portions of 17 Mile Drive and other historic, NorCal roads. That means that not only will spectators get to see the super-exclusive cars, they'll get to hear them, too. The Tour d'Elegance remains the very best way for the general public to see some of the finest vehicles ever made, in their natural environment – on-road.
This year's tour, which took place yesterday, saw participants run from Collins Field, along some of California's scenic roads and out to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca before stopping in Carmel-by-the-Sea. The cars spent some time displayed on Ocean Avenue in Carmel, before returning to Pebble Beach. Naturally, the whole affair ended with a champagne toast.
Ace photographer Drew Phillips was staked out on both 17 Mile Drive and the PCH to get photos of all the historic machinery.

Bugatti has officially debuted the first of its five "Legends" cars, which pay tribute to six of the most revered figures in the French manufacturer's pre-war history. The first, which we detailed a few weeks back, is dedicated to Bugatti's longest-serving test driver, Jean-Pierre Wimille, and is based on the world's fastest convertible - the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse.
Fittingly, it's finished in a paint scheme reminiscent of Wimille's own racer, a 1939 Bugatti Type 57C Tank, which was also on hand for the Monterey debut. Bearing blue carbon fiber and Wimille Bleu paint, it looked striking under the bright blue skies of Monterey. The powertrain, a quad-turbocharged, 16-cylinder monster, will remain unchanged for the Legend cars.

Chevrolet is already the featured car the Monterey Motorsports Reunion races, but it's also aiming to make a big splash outside the track. The Bow Tie has put all seven generations of production and racing Corvettes up to the C7 (which of course, doesn't have a racer based on it yet) on display for fans. You'll recall that Shelby made a similarly grand display last year, showing off several historic Cobras.
Spectators can easily trace the Corvette's evolution from its humble roots, up through its days as a muscle car (the C2 on display is particularly gorgeous), and on to its current place as a world-class sports car. As for the racers, it's interesting to see not just how the Corvette evolved as a racecar, but how racecars themselves evolved from the stock-looking C1 to the C6-based Z06-R GT3 car.

Galpin's monstrous GTR1 has made its official debut, and now we have live images to go along with the 1,197-horsepower (when fed 100-octane fuel) rocket. Taking a look at the GTR1 outside of the studio, it's interesting to see how different it looks.
The exterior isn't so familiar when shown in natural light. The studio shots make the design seem overly influenced by the Ford GT and Shelby GR-1. There are still nods to those designs, but we're certainly more enamored with the finished product.

Los Angeles, Calif. (August 16, 2013) - Galpin Auto Sports (GAS) debuted its first coach-built supercar, the Galpin Ford GTR1, on the Monterey peninsula with initial showings at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering on August 16 as well as a display on the prestigious concept lawn of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on August 18.

The Galpin Ford GTR1 is a vision of what the Ford GT may have looked and performed like, had Ford continued its evolution. Once the design of the prototype was finalized late last year, a hand-formed all aluminum body was constructed by renowned concept car builder, Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters, Inc., of Fountain Valley, Calif. - a process that in and of itself took more than 12,000 man hours to complete.
Underscoring its commitment to providing buyers with the ultimate custom coachwork experience, Galpin has worked with Metalcrafters to offer owners the choice of ordering their GTR1 in either a carbon fiber body or an aluminum body. In addition to its aluminum work, Metalcrafters has several decades of experience providing carbon fiber bodies for a number of established supercar manufacturers and world champion race teams.
Complementing the bespoke body created for the GTR1, Galpin equipped the car with a twin-turbocharged system specially tuned to produce 1024 horsepower and 739 pound feet of torque. With all that available power on hand, early estimates show the GTR1 is mechanically capable of speeds in excess of 225 mph, 0-60 mph in approximately three seconds and 0-100 mph in the mid-six second range.
Galpin also commissioned the design of a special set of brakes for the limited production run to assure the car could safely slow from such extreme speeds. Normally found on the F22 fighter jet, Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Formula One racing cars, a special set of carbon-carbon brake rotors were crafted and paired with Brembo six-piston calipers. The decision to use carbon-carbon rotors was made because of carbon-carbon's superior resistance to fade even under the most rapid deceleration from high speeds and the material's reduction in unsprung weight.
In addition to its twin-turbocharged V8, bespoke body and brakes, the GTR1 also features specially made 20-inch forged aluminum knock-off wheels shod with Pirelli P Zero Rosso tires, jeweled headlamps, tail lamps and select carbon fiber exterior accents.
Inside, owners will find a machined aluminum instrument cluster, McIntosh sound system and equally exquisite hand fabricated leather trimmed seats, dash, door panels and headliner all available in the buyer's preferred color and stitching.
In fact, the leather used for the interior was sourced from Bridge of Weir, a specialty Scottish leatherworks that for the past 100 years has provided material for some of the most exclusive luxury automotive applications the world over. For this GTR1 in particular, a gorgeous blue Sateen Marine leather was selected that makes use of a special recycled chromium process reducing the environmental impact of leather processing. In total, roughly eight hides were needed to complete all the leather appointments in the vehicle; each selected from free range cattle that graze at altitudes in excess of 4,000 feet to reduce potential blemishes to the finished surfaces that would ordinarily come from barbed wire and insect bites.
"For more than 60 years Galpin has placed the utmost importance on the craftsmanship and performance of each of the cars we build," said Beau Boeckmann, President of Galpin Auto Sports. "I'm incredibly proud to share our interpretation of one of the most iconic automotive designs of the twenty first century."
Production for the GTR1 will be extremely limited. Galpin anticipates an initial build of just six vehicles and a maximum of 24 units created with an initial price of just over one million dollars. For interested buyers outside the U.S., Galpin will facilitate international shipment and delivery as needed.
Orders for Galpin's supercar are being taken immediately with full-scale production scheduled for early 2014. For additional information on the Galpin Ford GTR1, please inquire with Galpin Ford GTR1 Sales Manager, Stuart McIntosh at (818) 922-3683 or via email at GTR1@Galpin.com

As one the featured automakers at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Aston Martin had a pretty big spotlight with which to reveal two production vehicles to the North American market. The 2014 Aston Martin Vanquish Volante (shown above) made its global premiere in Monterey, while the 2015 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S (inset) made its debut on American soil.
The $297,995 2014 Vanquish Volante has the same sexy styling as its hardtop counterpart but provides a retractable soft top for open-air motoring, while the $184,995 2015 V12 Vantage is Aston Martin's fastest production car ever (excluding the One-77) with its top speed of 205 miles per hour and 0-60 time of just 3.7 seconds; both cars go on sale in the US early next year. Unveiled at the McCall's Motorworks Revival, both new Aston Martin models are joined by the equally stunning CC100 Speedster Concept.

The week of automotive events on California's Monterey Peninsula doesn't truly begin until the McCall Motorworks Revival kicks off. Put on by Gordon McCall, who is also the co-founder of The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering, the Revival brings together celebrities, food, wine, and many, many, many vintage vehicles and aircraft, all in the name of charity.
Our troops were on hand for last night's event, which saw plenty of folks arrive at the Monterey Jet Center in private aircraft, while some of the world's finest automakers showed off their latest and greatest products. Aston Martin was heavily represented, while a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, in Tuxedo Black and with French Racing Blue accents, captured the crowd's attention.
Meanwhile, the classic cars were numerous, with a Ferrari 275 GTB, a 1967 Ford GT40, Steve McQueen's old Jaguar XK-SS and more than a few Aston Martin DB5s

Aston Martin had an overwhelming presence at last night's Motorworks Revival. Besides the production models on hand, including the new Vanquish Volante and V12 Vantage S, the British manufacturer brought a One-77 and held the live debut of the DB9 Spyder Zagato Centennial. This was one of two one-offs commissioned by Italian design house Zagato, in honor of Aston's year-long, hundredth birthday celebrations.
We got our first official peek at the Spyder Zagato in July, along with its sibling, the DBS Coupe Zagato Centennial. The Coupe was set to go to a Japanese entrepreneur, while the model you see above was slated for Aston Martin collector Peter Read. Based off of the DB9 Volante, the Spyder Zagato ditches that car's sleek styling in favor of something, um, squarer? The results are up for debate.

Singer, those folks that build awesome sports cars that take the shape of old Porsche 911s, has unveiled a slew of new options for its rear-engined classics at Gordon McCall's Motorworks Revival, an annual event held ahead of this weekend's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The ritzy event saw a custom Singer Racing Blue 911 appear, sporting a 360-horsepower, 3.8-liter flat-six. Officially called the Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer (pesky trademark agreements), it also generates a more-than-adequate 280 pound-feet of torque.
The new options run the gamut between style and function. Firmly on the style side is the new "second skin" interior, which matches the body color. In the case of Singer Racing Blue, the effect is striking, like being physically covered in Gulf Racing livery. The show car also sports a pair of carbon-fiber racing buckets that somehow blend modern technology and form factors with a kind of 1970s chic. Finally, a new adjustable suspension from Öhlins is available, for those that need a more sporting ride.

2013 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
I am surprised that this thread has not been started so I am starting it. This is the best car show on the Planet in my book ( well this and Goodwood ). We should all celebrate the occasion and see what rolled in, but I must say that in my years on this forum I have noticed that most members don't really care about automotive history as much as the recent models and trends. We have to brush up boys and girls !!!

After days of other activities, Sunday marked the start of the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and the beginning of the end of the 2013 Monterey car week. Affectionately referred to as "Pebble," this coastal California concours event is one of the most prestigious in the world, and brings in exceptionally rare machinery each year. Besides the standardized categories, each year also brings with it a list of special ones, often honoring brands, models or segments that have contributed to automotive culture.
2013's honorees included Aston Martin, Lamborghini and the Porsche 911, all of which are celebrating major milestones, with the British brand is in the midst of its centennial year. Lamborghini and Porsche's 911, meanwhile, have both been celebrating fiftieth birthdays in 2013. Also being honored was one of the prettiest BMW models in history, the 507 roadster. Coachbuilders also got plenty of attention, with Lincoln and Vanvooren each getting their own category, in addition to the Simplex marque. Even the two-wheelers got some time in the spotlight, with motorcycles from France getting their own category for this year's show.
As we reported yesterday, a 1934 Packard 1108 Twelve Dietrich Convertible Victoria took Best In Show. We have an expansive gallery from yesterday's event featuring some of the best examples of the most beautiful cars ever made.
