It looks like its based on the Yaris.

Default Toyota Hybrid-R Concept Is A 400-Horsepower Yaris

Last week we learned that Toyota was planning to unveil a new concept car at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, which would showcase technology from its TS030 Hybrid Le Mans prototype in road car form. That got us wondering whether we might get a preview of Toyota’s planned successor for the Supra sports car in Frankfurt.

Unfortunately, this is not the case as Toyota has revealed a second teaser of its upcoming concept, which confirms that it will be based on the Yaris Hybrid. The new concept will be called the Hybrid-R and feature a sophisticated powertrain combining an internal combustion engine with an unspecified number of electric motors. Peak output will be 400 horsepower.

In order to make the most of that output, the Hybrid-R will feature a dual-mode control system that allows the car’s performance to be tailored to suit either the road or track. Helping to develop the Hybrid-R is TMG, the German outfit currently responsible for Toyota's Le Mans program and the former constructor of its F1 cars.

Toyota is keen to leverage its technology developed for Le Mans in its future road cars, and the Hybrid-R offers a glimpse of what to expect. Unfortunately, Toyota is yet to mention when we might see a high-performance hybrid model in showrooms but the Hybrid-R suggests things are brewing.

We’ll be seeing one more teaser before the reveal of the Hybrid-R at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show on September 10. To ensure you don’t miss out on any of our coverage, stay glued to our dedicated hub.

Of all the donor cars they could've picked they chose to demonstrate their best, cutting-edge hybrid racing technologies on a FWD econobox? What happened to the Volta and the MR2-based hybrid concepts, all of which not only had 400+hp but also a RWD layout and a sporty look to go with the sporty intention?

Let's hope the technology underneath is at least a real step forward.

Expect a Supra...get a Yaris. Sounds like a good deal.

I want a real Supra replacement, not a hybrid hatchback like car like that FT-HS concept or a 400hp Yaris.

Toyota, you tricked us good. But its a little bit of good news, if the hybrid R is based off the Yaris/Auris, the new "Supra" could be a turbo RC-F (just dreaming here)

Yes they did fool us, however I think this announcement still has meaning.
I predict that with this they're teasing us fans with the "Supra successor's" powertrain.
Anyone recall the original rumors over the past few years of the powertrain that the production version of the FT-HS was supposed to have? A rumored 400HP V6 capacitor hybrid system. Sound familiar? It sounds a lot like what this Hybrid R powertrain could be.

Also not too long ago, the chief engineer of the 86 let it slip that they had experimental 86 prototypes running around Japan with capacitor hybrid systems.

I think this 400hp Yaris is just to lull competitors into a false sense of security while Lexus secretly preps an upgraded version of this supercapacitor powertrain in an RC-F/GS-F/LF-LC body.

If they managed to put 400hp in a Yaris, this is quite an engineering achievement already.

Its just a concept. A hot hatch with 400hp, is more than likely 4wd and showcases the capabilities of hybrid powertrains. Not to mention its in Frankfurt, Germany, which is a European country where these small cars are more popular. Remember TMG has the LS as well, so maybe we will get more information on the TMG backed vehicles.
