So the press release basically points a bad finger at their own TL in regards to styling. They had a fan and magazine favorite in the 1st gen TSX, turn it into cruiser in the 2nd gen and now its canned. Now TL gains an X and TSX is gone. What a turn of events.
They are utterly delusional by calling the ILX entry level luxury, the TLX mid-size and the RLX flagship.

TORRANCE, CA., Dec. 19, 2013 –Acura today announced that the 2015 Acura TLX Prototype performance luxury sedan will debut at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. The TLX will mark the debut of a new name for Acura's mid-size modern luxury sedan entry, replacing the outgoing TL model. The all-new model will feature more emotional styling with tidier, sports sedan proportions wrapped around two all-new advanced powertrains that provide even more athletic performance, along with a host of signature Acura technologies. The 2015 TLX Prototype is designed to appeal to current and next-generation luxury sports sedan buyers including existing TL and TSX customers.
In conjunction with the launch of the production TLX in the second half of next year, Acura will discontinue sales of the TSX model in 2014, as it moves to clarify its sedan lineup with a clear hierarchy of three distinct models – [B]the entry luxury ILX, mid-size TLX sports sedan, and flagship RLX performance seda[n/B].

There is some indication that TLX will be official Accord replacement which seems likely as TSX/Accord is being discontinued next year. So in terms of size this car will end up smaller than current huge TL but larger than current TSX so technically it is a midsize car a la Passat.
TLX offered as Honda in other parts of the world will be great cause for the first time Honda will bring its "affordable luxury" to it's line up. Actually that makes more sense than offering it as Acura in US now that I think about it. If US spec TLX somehow survives spec changes for European market it would be a no brainer when compared to lackluster Passat, Avensis, 508, Laguna, Insignia or any other non-luxury midsize car on European market. But that is only if TLX comes to EU with nothing else but different badges and a diesel option.

if they did, and switched to rwd platform with sh-awd option, all else remaining the same , but in so doing had to bring their pricing up to similar levels as Lexus / Cadillac / BMW / Audi / MB, would they sell more or less vehicles as they do now? discuss amongst yourselves.....

They also have to divest themselves from Honda and anything image related. Similar to how Lexus is slowly gaining control of themselves from Toyota as well as regions ie US etc.. getting more say in their own market rather than Japan Corporate dictating every little thing.
I will say it is very impressive as well as a little unexpected of Acura/Honda USA building the NSX despite protests from home so props to that
perhaps the next NSX will light a fire under Acura and do to them what the LFA did for Lexus.

They don't have to go RWD (though it would admittedly be nice), they simply need to model themselves after Audi and Quattro. Audi's are after all FWD but their formula works because Quattro is a staple to the brand. Acura has this awesome technology yet they simply refuse to exploit it. This latest RDX is a great vehicle inside and out but it now has a standard AWD system vs the first generations SH-AWD.
They also have to divest themselves from Honda and anything image related. Similar to how Lexus is slowly gaining control of themselves from Toyota as well as regions ie US etc.. getting more say in their own market rather than Japan Corporate dictating every little thing.
I will say it is very impressive as well as a little unexpected of Acura/Honda USA building the NSX despite protests from home so props to that perhaps the next NSX will light a fire under Acura and do to them what the LFA did for Lexus.

Acura had NO PROBLEMS selling tons and tons of cars when they actually looked good. Most people don't even know or understand the differences between FWD or RWD. The new TL/TLX just needs to look good, and it will sell. TL sales peaked for the 3rd gen car (2004-2008), which arguably was one of the best looking cars on the market. Every other car around here in the DC suburbs was a 3rd gen TL at one point. Sales of the 4th gen model are only half of what the 3rd gen was. The Infiniti G-line outsells the TL nearly 2-to-1 in the U.S. now, which looks pretty decent. Nobody wants an ugly car.

Every Audi above the A3 also share many common aspects with RWD cars including engine placement, dash to axle ratio (for the most part as the A8 suffers just slightly from the FWD "look") they even use the ZF 8-speed found in every BMW, Jaguar, Chrysler 300/Charger.
Acuras don't have the RWD "look" not to mention the configuration for high horsepower cars like Audi does.
