Default Spy Shots: Next-Gen Nissan Titan

Bug-eyed next-gen Nissan Titan spied testing

It's no secret that the fullsize pickup truck market is dominated by offerings from Detroit's Big Three automakers, the Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra not able to outdo the Ford F-150, Ram 1500 or Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra twins. A great deal of that has to do with the fact that, while the American trucks have all undergone evolutionary updates that include a range of body styles, fuel-efficient engines and excellent technology, the Japanese offerings are, well, really old. Toyota is offering an updated Tundra for the 2014 model year, and while we haven't driven it yet, we're already betting that it's still behind the pack in terms of competitiveness – the 2013 model placed fifth out of sixth in a recent PickupTrucks.com comparison test.

At the bottom of the pack lies the Nissan Titan, a truck that hasn't received any sort of substantial update since its introduction nearly ten years ago. But that's going to change – a new truck is slated to debut for the 2015 model year, and these spy shots of a Titan mule clearly show that things are moving forward.

While this tester relies heavily on the current truck's bodywork for testing purposes, the new Titan will have a revised design, some of which is evidenced by the bug-eyed front fascia of this mule. No, the production model isn't going to look all weird (we hope), but the higher, more outboard headlight placement suggests that the new truck will be a bit wider than the current model.

Earlier reports have suggested that the new Titan will offer an increased range of powertrains and bodystyles, including, for the first time, a Regular Cab option. In addition to V8 power, V6 models will be available, and a Cummins diesel engine is rumored to be in the works for the Titan, as well. We still have another year or so before the new Titan debuts, so stay tuned for more details. We just hope this refresh will be enough to move Nissan's truck up from bottom-of-the-pack status.

About d*** time Nissan got around to this. Personally I don't think it will make a dent. 2014 Rams, 2014 Silverado's, and 2015 F-Series are not to be trifled with. Nissan, Toyota and Honda would have a easier time with light duty trucks like the Frontier, Tacoma and Ridgeline since most of the domestics have abandon that market in favor of full and 1/2 ton trucks

Thing is those Tacomas are just as expensive as full size trucks. Plus they really don't offer any fuel economy advantage unless you go with a base 2wd/4 cylinder.

10 Years? What has Nissan been waiting for? 'Bout time. But yeah, the new one won't make a dent anyway. If Toyota struggles against the American trucks, Nissan doesn't stand any chance.

And yet the Tacoma outsells the Tundra. I agree, it makes very little economic sense to by a small truck over a full size. I guess some people just prefer the Tacoma's size.

Even here in NYC, where parking isn't great, the full sizers are running rampant and its not only construction guys. Little 5'0 females driving em around. Hardly recall seeing frontier or Tacoma.

Well my point was basically other than reliability and competence that carry the Tacoma, Honda, Nissan and Toyota can't crack the full size category. They're better off with smaller trucks like the Tacoma, Frontier and Ridgeline which are much more successful for them, and which again the Domestics are slowly weaning off

Default Nissan Titan's upcoming Cummins diesel originally meant for Ram

Nissan Titan's upcoming Cummins diesel originally meant for Ram

The Cummins 5.0-liter turbocharged diesel V8 that Ram initially planned to use in its pickup trucks instead will find its way into the 2015 Nissan Titan as an option, Automobile reports. It will be the first time a non-Ram pickup truck will be available with a Cummins diesel engine.

The move comes after Chrysler decided to use a 3.0-liter V6 EcoDiesel engine designed by VM Motori (which is partially owned by Fiat) due to fuel economy concerns with the Cummins engine. Chrysler wanted its 2014 Ram 1500 trucks to achieve at least 26 miles per gallon. "Our simulations were showing 23 to 24 mpg [for the 5.0-liter engine]," says Mike Cairns, head of engineering at Ram.

Nissan had plans in 2008 to team with Cummins for a diesel engine for its Titan, when there were also plans for the second-generation Titan to share its platform with the Dodge Ram 1500, according to Automotive News, but that didn't pan out after Chrysler's bankruptcy in 2009.

Now that the dust is settling, let's put the pieces together. The 2014 Ram 1500 will get the EcoDiesel V6 as an option, making 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque; heavy-duty Rams can be equipped with the Cummins 6.7-liter diesel I6, which makes 350-385 hp and 660-850 lb-ft depending on the state of tune; and the 2015 Nissan Titan, a light-duty pick-up, will get the Cummins 5.0-liter V8 as an option, which makes roughly 300 hp and 500 lb-ft.

While the Nissan Titan currently poses no threat to Ram's truck operation - Nissan sold just 10,020 Titans this year through July while Ram sold 201,633 trucks during the same period - we like the idea of a light-duty pickup with a torque-rich diesel V8. Nissan's research shows that truck owners feel the same way, and 17 percent of them would consider switching brands if a light-duty truck was offered with a diesel V8, Automobile reports. That works out to 300,000 customers per year.

Being that the Titan will be RWD based I wonder if they'll stuff the VQ37 in there as a base engine, offer this 5.0L V8 Diesel, and the 400hp 5.6L V8?
