You can stretch a platform....Look at how the current models are all FM based from the 370Z to the M. That is one thing I like about Lexus, its a Lexus.
Wasn't the RX and IS based on a Toyota (Harrier and Altezza)? BTW, the RX is based on a Camry/Highlander platform and have the same engine...so the Lexus is really a Toyota.

Ironically the most expensive Nissan is way more than the most expensive Infiniti

My understanding is the q50 will use the Nissan vq until further notice. MB V8s may show up in the IPL variants, and a 4 cylinder version is in the works. There may be other powerplants co developped by MB like diesels, but none are slated for North America.
This is correct, they do not share a platform.

The next C-class will, however, will ride on a platform that can stretch all the way to the S-class. Mercedes' super modular MRA platform is similar in variability to VW/Audi's MQB platform.

Infiniti Q50 falls short of BMW in affordable luxury

A new naming convention takes hold with the 2014 Infiniti Q50, replacing the G37 sedan at the bottom of the Nissan luxury subsidiary’s model line, but a revived letter and an attention-grabbing face lift fail to solve its biggest problem: the competition.

Two Infiniti models will be manufactured in China to take advantage of its fast-growing market
Beginning life a decade ago as the G35, the entry-level luxury sedan from Infiniti continues to toil in the shadow of the all-singing, all-dancing BMW 3 Series. Though Johan de Nysschen, president of the Infiniti brand, did not mention that or any other competitor by name in his address on 14 January at the Detroit auto show, the Bavarian sedan loomed large between his teleprompter-served lines.

Infiniti has done Q cars before. Its former flagship sedan bore the letter, and its top-line SUV goes by QX. Though the alphabetical resurrection is notable, the Q50 does not hold up its end of the bargain.

The car’s cheeks – pardon, face – which chief creative officer Shiro Nakamura described as a “double arch grille”, evokes a cherub eating Japanese salted plum candies; the car is happy to meet you, but is clearly experiencing some discomfort. Above the rear wheel, a crescent character line appears lifted from the Nissan Altima, a midsize sedan priced more than $15,000 less than the outgoing G37.

Power comes, at least at its US launch later this summer (China and Europe follow later in the year), from a 3.7-litre V6 producing 328 horsepower and a hybrid powertrain, for which de Nysschen did not announce specifics. Fuel economy and pricing will also be announced closer to its summer sale date. A first for the brand, which de Nysschen said was a first for the industry, was Direct Adaptive Steering, an electric system said to be more precise and responsive than hydraulic systems.

Infiniti omitted mention of the G coupe, the luxurious, stronger-selling equivalent to Nissan’s 370 Z sports car. Asked in an interview following the press conference about the omission, de Nysschen said the G coupe, too, would wear a Q, as the Q60.

“The coupe is an important part of our plan,” he said. “Expect Q60 about two-and-a-half years down the road.”

The BMW 3 Series has met every challenge brought by Audi and Mercedes-Benz, as well as by Japanese and American brands. Like Lexus, Acura and, increasingly, Cadillac, Infiniti can no longer trumpet cash savings over BMW’s 3 Series in its advertising. It must rely on the drive, and above all, the slippery calculus of “premium”, to woo buyers.

To this, Nakamura noted that the brand would rely on “Infinitiness” to distinguish its offering in the marketplace. Whether that is a winning substance remains for drivers to decide.
Wow the coupe is 2 years away.....Why would they not have it ready now? Are they going to keep selling the current car and rebadge it? By that time Lexus will have their coupe and the Audi A5/S5 continues to gain ground.

Huh? That's not a review. It's just an overview of the car's basic backgrounds. They didn't even sit in the car let alone drive it, and have very little to say about the actual car, positive or negative. I agree that his tone sounds like a bimmer fanboy though.

And when was the last time a coupe version is released alongside a sedan, from any automaker?

I'm not buying the 2.5 years away part. General consensus on the Infiniti forums is the coupe will follow 1 year behind the sedan.

Yeah he most likely said 2.5 years to avoid affecting the sales of the current models.

That sir is a BMW fan boy, doesn't sound like a review at all. Bunch of negative assumptions with no real facts. Im sure he writes the same **** about Lexus, Caddy etc.

Review? Just a load of subjective mumbo-jumbo.

While they both have many flaws, the q50 is growing on me, and the new IS is still not.

The 3rd IS is still hideous and looks like a bunch of random shapes clashing together.

Obviously they make the LED lights outside of the headlamps just for the sake of trying something new. The shape the creases make strongly resemble the current IS headlamps and they couldnt just leave them untouched. This is an example of doing for the sake of doing and not for the sake of beauty

I still can't decide between he Q50 hybrid AWD and 335 xDrive. The 2014 F30s will have the new navi and possibly a new engine but it will be a fall delivery. The 13's seem old compared to the Q50.

The advantage to LED DRLs is that you can do stuff like this. And in the future many in the industry will. Better to be ahead of the curb than be seen as following the pack later, especially Lexus, the pioneer of LEDs in headlights.

The W205 C-Class is moving slightly upscale due to the new CLA coupe slotting under it, so yes it's possible. The W222 S-Class is much bigger than the W221, so the W213 E-Class(it's design has just been chosen) will be bigger as well.
