Nissan has sold tens of thousands of Leaf EVs around the world, but at least for the moment, only buyers in Japan will get to trick their electric vehicles out with the company's new Nismo Performance Package. The NPP's various modules will improve the aerodynamics, driving performance and even the energy efficiency of your Leaf, thanks to technology built up in Nissan's Nismo motorsports division.

The visual and aero changes include lightweight LMX6 aluminum wheels for around $450 each, as well as an add-on rear spoiler, front and rear bumpers and side skirts in the Aero Package (about $5,500 in fiberglass or $7,700 in wet carbon fiber). In addition, the $1,100 sports suspension kit incorporates reworked dampers and springs to improve handling while delivering a ride height that's lower by 30 millimeters.

The most interesting change, though, is the Sports Reset feature for roughly $1,400 US, which tunes the vehicle control module to both improve the driving characteristics that make it "possible to enjoy sports driving more" (according to Google Translate) and increase range. There are no official details on how many more miles can be tweaked out of the pack, but if any of these changes come to the US, this one would likely be the easiest to get people to sign up for.

cool. In the end these cars are the future and tuning and desiring more power and handling will never cease. So this is the next step. Take a green car and make it fun to drive. Handling is far more important to driving pleasure than HP by far. This is a great thing to have both fun and economy

$10-12k more from the factory?

If it's under warranty and includes installation, that's pretty much what most enthusiasts spend to modify their cars with carbon fiber body kit, aluminum wheels, and suspension kit; not to mention the range increase.

Not that bad of a bargain when you look at it that way...

Prius already had a performance model.

In 2011, the Prius Plus Performance Package was introduced.

The package features styling and performance upgrades, and is optionally available on all Prius models with pricing set at $3,699 for the Prius Two, Three, and Four trim levels and $2,999 for the Prius Five.

Customers can choose from four exterior colors -Blizzard Pearl, Classic Silver Metallic, Black and Winter Gray Metallic. On the outside, the Prius PLUS is dressed in a seven-piece ground effects kit that includes front and rear bumper spoilers, side skirts and a rear diffuser.

The hybrid model also gains 17-inch alloy wheels in a five-spoke design wrapped in low-profile 215/45R17 tires with a custom offset, which Toyota says increases the track width while “maintaining Prius’ low rolling resistance”.

Underneath the sheetmetal, the PLUS package adds a sports-tuned suspension with lowering springs (1.1 inches in the front and 1.3 inches in the rear) and a new rear sway bar constructed of high carbon spring steel.

Custom badging inside and out along with bespoke carpet floor mats round off the package.
