2014 Accord Hybrid to get 49mpg city
Honda is expanding its Accord lineup this fall with the addition of the 2014 Accord Hybrid that will boast class-leading fuel efficiency.
The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid will use the Japanese automaker’s new two-motor hybrid powertrain, much of which is found on the Accord Plug-in that went on sale earlier this year. Three different driving modes will be available on the Accord Hybrid, EV Drive, Hybrid Drive, and Engine Drive to help optimize fuel efficiency.
In the EV Drive mode, the Accord Hybrid utilizes the lithium-ion battery for electric-only mode at lower speeds and in medium-to-high speed cruising. Engine Drive will send power directly to the front wheels while Hybrid Drive takes advantage of the 124-kilowatt electric motor and the 2.0-liter, DOHC i-VTEC Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine. Honda anticipates that the Accord Hybrid will receive an EPA rating of 49 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway.
Unique to the Accord Hybrid will be hybrid badging, blue-accented grille and light lenses, LED daytime running lights, special wheels, and a rear trunk spoiler.
The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid will be the first Honda hybrid vehicle assembled in Ohio and the second built in the U.S

why must most hybrids have hideous rims?

Sometimes aerodynamics can make wheels look realllllllllllllly bad lol. Look at that fat-spoked older civic hybrid! They are literally no more than slits between the spokes.
If this new Accord hybrid really does get 49mpg, then the new Prius better be pushing at least 60!
Toyota cant keep carrying over engines while their opponents are catching up.

At least it doesnt' have the silly styling of the plug-in model. I call this hybrid a total winner. The numbers are outstanding for the class. If it's priced right, it will give Honda even more credibilty for the Accord line-up. The future is now and it's refreshing to see Honda in the forefront with something.

Damn. Toyota should redo a Camry Hybrid with a Valvematic 2.0L instead of the 2.5L just to show Honda and Ford who the boss is!!!
The Camry Hybrid with 200hp has too much power for most people who are just looking to save fuel on a midsized sedan. 2.0L should be the sweet spot.

I have a feeling that real mpg will be much closer to Camry than Prius, just like it is with Fusion.

Impressive. Honda definitely looks like they're getting back on track. Toyota will really need to pull out all the stops on the next Prius as there are several models getting dangerously close to its numbers. People were predicting "60 MPG" before the 3rd gen Prius was introduced. Didn't happen. The 4th Gen will indeed need to close in on that number to continue to stand out as the hybrid benchmark.
I'm glad the hybrid doesn't look like the hideously styled plug-in. It's amazing Honda took the beautiful new Accord and and made it look like a joke with the plug-in.
Next up, Honda needs to really pull off a great new Insight that is a real, full hybrid using their latest tech. The current Insight is an utter failure. Pretty interesting that the Insight's MPG will be beat by the large Accord that is shaped like a normal sedan. LOL.

I am also interested in seeing the specs of Honda's new 2-motor hybrid system. I have seen claims that it runs as a CVT, like Toyota's and Ford's hybrid systems, AND also a direct-drive mode (engine directly turning the drive wheels, unlike Toyota and Ford), which I assume is not running in CVT mode. So does Honda have a power-split device (PSD), and if so, how is it configured?
