2014 Nissan GT-R Track Pack squares off against Audi R8 V10 Plus
Motor Trend has pitted the new Audi R8 V10 Plus against the Nissan GT-R. While both of the bright red all-wheel-drive supercars are comparably matched in power output, the similarities end there. Audi offers a mid-engine aluminum coupe with a naturally aspirated V10 that spits out 550 horsepower. Nissan shows up with a more traditional coupe equipped with a 545-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6 at the front of the car.
The Head-to-Head video takes both cars to the Streets of Willow Springs in the California desert for some track work with professional racing driver Randy Pobst behind the wheel. After a day at the track, the pair head to the local mountains for some spirited real-world driving. One dominates on the circuit, while the other earns back its credibility in the canyons.

A very well done comparo - much better than I expected from MT. Hats off to Carlos Lago in that regard.
The review in its criticism of the GT-R mirrors my complaint of AWD generally, which is that I feel like I have to push AWD cars nearly past the limit to feel like I'm actually driving something. It's just not a rewarding experience below the limit. It does seem like the reviewers did think the R8 provided substantially better feel in this regard, though.
Either way, I'd certainly pass on either of these cars. $120k for a GT-R? Seems silly. $190k for an R8? Look, hats off to Audi for having the ***** to finally offer an R8 with an engine that's not (too) detuned. That said, it's disappointing that now that we finally have it, it's also priced not to undercut the car it's detuned from. Just spring the extra for a Gallardo, which comes with the option of going down to RWD.
I also don't think the 'V10 Plus' makes a compelling argument for the R8's daily driving capabilities (TG and others have complained about how much stiffer the suspension is on the Plus, making for a far worse ride than the standard R8s). Why not just offer the (not-too-)detuned engine and keep the other bits available?
I actually don't like the look of the R8. Midengine cars are so easy to make look good. Audi ruins the R8 with the brand-matching front and the nasty contrast side blade. Certainly, no defense of the GT-R aesthetics from me.

For $80,000 more, you could pay to have the GTR completely re-upholstered in snake-hide leather if you chose, have a kickass sound system that would blow the stock R8's away and there are now aftermarket tuners that would replace the stock shocks with much more liveable suspension THAT would also handle better than the R8 ( AMS and some UK GTR tuners come to mind). AND still have spare cash left over to buy a daily driver for non-track days.
R8 is nicer inside and has a nicer ride. But $80,000 nicer? Not a chance...
