Default Porsche 918 Spyder already almost sold out?

Still planning on getting your hands on a Porsche 918 Spyder? You'd better act quickly, because word has it that the hybrid hypercar is nearly sold out.

While Porsche has reportedly only delivered a little over 30 of the 918 examples of the Spyder it plans to manufacture in total, Automotive News says that production is sold out through late March or early April – just a few months shy of when production is set to wrap in July.

That's pretty impressive for a car with a base price of almost $850,000, especially one requiring a $200,000 deposit just to get your name on the list. Still, that sum is significantly less than its competitors get for the McLaren P1 or LaFerrari, both of which sell for over a million (if you can actually get on one at that price), though in fairness, production of each is limited to less than half of the 918 Spyder.

Default Top Gear’s Richard Hammond Has a Blast in the Porsche 918 Spyder

In Top Gear's Season 21 Jeremy Clarkson drove the McLaren P1 at the Spa-Franchorchamps track in Belgium and, even though the weather conditions were horrible, he actually loved it. Which is high praise indeed for the man is known to be quite difficult to please...

Richard Hammond, on the other hand, sampled the 918 Spyder at the Yas Marina circuit, at night and in the dry. At first, he marveled at the level of luxury the Porsche offers the driver and passenger, which is in stark comparison to the Spartan P1 that doesn’t even have a glove box.

Oh, who cares? Touchscreens and hi-end audio systems are not what these hypercars are about; instead, they are all about driving and, with the Abu Dhabi track at his disposal, Hammond drove the wheels off the 918. In case you missed it the first time around, or you just want to view it again, just scroll down for the video.

Default Porsche sells final 918 Spyder amidst excellent year of sales

Porsche exceeds previous year's sales by November

Last unit of the 918 Spyder sold

Atlanta. Porsche AG increased global deliveries to customers from January to November this year to more than 169,000 vehicles, already exceeding the overall total for 2013 of 162,145 new vehicles. This represented a growth of 15 percent over the same period last year (January to November 2013: 147,290 vehicles). In the month of November, Porsche delivered 17,700 vehicles – an increase of one quarter over the same month last year.

"This strong November is evidence that our strategy is working extremely well," said Bernhard Maier, Member of the Executive Board – Sales and Marketing of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG. "It also confirms our commitment to taking advantage of every opportunity presented in the global markets."

In Europe, Porsche delivered 54,500 vehicles from January to November 2014 – an increase of 18 percent over the previous year, with the domestic German market accounting for 22,200 of the sales. The American region also showed a significant 13 percent increase over last year with a total of 51,600 deliveries.

In addition, November announced the finality of sales for the 918 Spyder hybrid super sports car. With a limited run of 918 units, the majority of the cars – 297 – will be shipped from the Zuffenhausen manufactory to buyers in the USA. In both Germany and China there are already around 100 proud new owners who have taken delivery of the super sports car.

Default Porsche 918 Spyder wrecked in China

Happened in Shanghai

A Porsche 918 Spyder sustained significant damages after being involved in a serious crash this week in China.

The accident took place on a narrow road in Shanghai and according to local media the Porsche 918 Spyder was being driven above the speed limit by a woman, a friend of the owner who was on the passenger seat. Reports are indicating she mixed up the brake pedal with the acceleration pedal which led to the supercar hitting a tree on the right side of the road.

Both the driver and passenger escaped the crash without any injuries and luckily there wasn't anyone on the sidewalk at the moment of the crash which occurred in the early hours of the morning.

We remind you Porsche is making only 918 units of their flagship model but one of them has already been taken off the streets after catching fire in Canada towards the end of September. As for this car, it appears to be in a rough shape but chances are it is still repairable but you can image the job won't come cheap.

Default Porsche 918 Spyder recalled again for chassis problems

205 cars affected

Porsche will recall 205 examples of the 918 Spyder hybrid supercar to replace defective chassis parts.

According to Bloomberg, the fault was discovered during in-house quality tests and no complains have been registered. The German manufacturer is taking the “precautionary measure” because it can’t guarantee the parts permanently, says our source.

We remind you that back in September Porsche recalled some of the US-spec models for rear axle control arms issues. 45 cars sold worldwide were also inspected and the problem was fixed.

Default Porsche 918 Spyder Wears Traditional Supercar Gold Chrome Outfit [w/Video]

Click here to view more photos

There's something about chrome-gold wraps that gets certain owners of exotic rides super excited. We thought the fad would eventually die down, but evidently, we were wrong.

Luxury-car spotter Patrick3331 nabbed Porsche 918 Spyder No.222 (out of an already sold-out production of exactly 918 units) parked outside a hotel somewhere in Saudi Arabia.

The carbon fiber bits you see on the car, including the roof, rear wings, door mirrors and frames of the windscreen are part of the optional Weissach Package that cuts weight by about 40 kg or 88 pounds and adds to the thrills.

So , what's your verdict on the chrome-gold wrap?

Default Watch a Porsche 918 Dancing its Troubles Away on a Frozen Lake

Watching a hypercar out in the snow is a rare treat; watching a hypercar dancing on the snow is in a whole different league of unthinkable potential sights.

A brave and obviously wealthy man took his Porsche 918 out to play in a frozen lake somewhere in Finland. The car was fitted with studded winter tyres because snow and the play commenced. You’ve probably seen some faster sideways action from the 918 but for the sheer fun, this video is up there with the best.

The 918 is the only four-wheel-drive entry in the hybrid hypercar trio which makes it somehow more suitable for that kind of winter driving. With 887ps on tap, this Hyper Porsche can keep happy anyone but we are glad to see someone really enjoying his new toy.

Check the video.

On this very special episode of Head 2 Head, we present a hypercar battle for the ages: The McLaren P1 versus the Porsche 918 Spyder. Both of these cars have carbon fiber tubs and body panels. Both have small displacement, high revving V-8s packed between their passenger compartments and rear axles. Both use twin-clutch transmissions, carbon ceramic brakes, and active aerodynamics. Both have roughly 900 hp. Both are plug-in hybrids. And today, with the help of pro racing driver Randy Pobst, we find out which one is fastest around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
918 wins.

Awesome infograph. I expected the AWD of the 918 to aid it even more around the track, but regardless these two cars are very similar in the end. You can't go wrong with either. The McLaren is prettier and more exotic (IMO), though the 918 is easily the better daily driver and an impressive EV mode.
