Default Maria Sharapova & Mark Webber take Porsche 918 Spyder on joyride [video]

Lucky Webber

Tennis star Maria Sharapova and Porsche driver Mark Webber had a run in the Porsche 918 Spyder supercar in Stuttgart, Germany. Sharapova was in town for the Porsche Grand Prix tournament, which she won a day after the video was released.

The Russian tennis player, currently ninth in the WTA women’s ranking, admitted she had a great time in the 918 Spyder, although she didn’t drive it. The Porsche brand ambassador said the hybrid vehicle is a little out of her price range. Webber in turn told journalists the car's performance is phenomenal.

Meanwhile, while Sharapova was in Stuttgart, her boyfriend – Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria, also had some great moments at the tennis court. He defeated Lukas Rosol to win the Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest, Romania, for his third ATP title.

On this week's Ignition, Carlos Lago has a second go at Porsche's 918 hypercar. The goal: to run the 918 through the full gauntlet of MT's instrumented testing, including 0-60, quarter mile, braking, figure 8, and a blistering real-time hot lap around Big Willow race track with pro driver Randy Pobst. Carlos also gets a rare chance to experience the 918's ancestor, the Porsche 959. The 959 was a remarkable piece of automobile history that was decades ahead of its time with much of it's technology only appearing in common vehicles within the last ten years or so. The 918 attempts something very similar, featuring very advanced technology, including a naturally aspirated V8 that works with a seamlessly integrated electric motor to provide extra boost. Can Porsche's new hypercar achieve the same effect that its predecessor did? Only time will tell, but stay tuned for the record-breaking review.

Thanks Motor.

Lago has some enjoyable videos. 918 is my current supercar crush, I cannot get enough of this car. Brilliant chassis that keeps beating most of Ignition's previous records. Nice highlighting and tributing to the 959.

Default Porsche 918 Spyder with Racing Yellow paint spotted in Brazil [video]

Packs a 887 PS combined output

A Porsche 918 Spyder featuring a flashy Racing Yellow paint was filmed roaming the streets of Brazil.

Last week we saw Jay Kay's Kermit Green La Ferrari and now a Racing Yellow Porsche 918 Spyder was caught on camera in Brazil ready to support the local team for the 2014 World Cup. Porsche will produce only 918 units and probably most of them will wear the Liquid Metal Silver paint like the one Jay Leno drove earlier this year while those who will pay more for the optional Weissach package will probably order the Martini livery as well. Zlatan Ibravimovic selected a black hue for his 918 Spyder which comes with green brake calipers.

The yellow 918 Spyder was being driven in electric mode so at that time it was powered by two motors (156 PS & 129 PS) working together with 6.8 kWh lithium-ion battery to provide a range of 16 miles (26 km). When used as a hybrid, the supercar offers 887 PS (661 kW) and more than 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque, enough for a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) run in 2.8 seconds, 0-200 km/h (0-124 mph) in 7.9 seconds and 0-300 km/h (0-186 mph) in 23 seconds. Equally impressive is the average fuel consumption of just 3.3 liters / 100km (71.2 mpg US or 85.6 mpg UK) with corresponding CO2 emissions of 79 g/km.

The 918 Spyder is the ultimate Porsche, and the ultimate supercar - holding the road car lap record for the infamous Nordschleife of the Nürburgring. Here, Gordon Robertson cruises to the Festival of Speed start line on electric power only, then launches the record-setting car up Goodwood's famous hill.

The Porsche 911 Turbo is so fast it nearly detached our retinas. The Porsche 918 is the very pinnacle of Porsche performance. But which is faster in a straight line?

The performance is insane but it is being somewhat overshadowed by the McLaren and Ferrari hybrids in many cases. I think it is the best looking of the three. I wonder why Jay Leno did not buy a 918 after his test drive and just went with the McLaren, he seemed to be impressed with the 918 and loves both his F1 and Carrera GT. He certainly has the money for both.

I still want to see a shootout/comparison between all 3 cars from Top Gear, CAR, or a American magazine like Automobile, CD, RT.

I still think the McLaren is my favorite, but none of these three halo cars are anything short of revolutionary. The fact that we have three released at the same time is amazing

The 4.6L 'racebred' V8 with 608hp sounds incredible. And the fact the 918 Spyder can go up to 18 miles in range and reach speeds of 91mph in full Electric is just icing on the cake

In Car and Driver they tested the 918, it did 0-60 in 2.2 seconds, 0-100 in 4.9 seconds, and the quarter mile in 9.8 seconds. It makes it quicker then both the McLaren and Ferrari hybrids and even a Veyron though the Veyron does accelerate harder and faster at higher speeds and has a much higher top speed. Those numbers are insane and surprising considering that the power and performance of the other 2 hybrid supercars seemed to overshadow the less expensive Porsche 918.

Default On-board video with Porsche 918 Spyder doing 0-333 km/h sprint

Fastest car with global road homologation around the Nürburgring

Christian Gebhardt from Sport Auto had the opportunity to conduct a series of tests with the Porsche 918 Spyder.

Porsche's answer to the LaFerrari and P1 is a worthy adversary as the production-spec 918 Spyder is amazingly fast. Seen here is one example performing a series of accelerations with assistance from the launch control system which propels Stuttgart's latest flagship model to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 2.5 seconds.

When equipped with the optional Weissach package, the 0-124 mph (0-200 km/h) run will take just 7.2 seconds while the 0-186 mph (0-300 km/h) sprint is completed in 19.9 seconds before topping out at more than 214 mph (345 km/h). The Porsche 918 Spyder is equally impressive in electric mode since it runs the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) journey in 6.1 seconds with the Weissach kit en route to a maximum speed of 93 mph (150 km/h).

Until Ferrari and McLaren will post Nürburgring lap times, the Porsche 918 Spyder will remain the fastest car with global road homologation on the Nordschleife with a 6m 57s run. The Koenigsegg One:1 also has all the ingredients to take down Porsche's record.
