As far as being late to the game, I think Lexus was considering two things:
1) Fear. Should we stoop below the RX-size class and offer "affordable luxury?" What would such a vehicle do to our reputation/name? Perhaps the HS's failure fed this fear.
2) Complacency. With RX sales so robust, we're not really starving for another SUV.
Between these two things, I can see the company dragging it's feet.

Lexus just loves to be late to the game. Finally considering coupes and verts. Small SUV. F cars. All this should have been out in the last few years where BMW, MBZ and Audi have a product onslaught and a niche for everything. Not to mention Lexus was the first to pioneer the 8-speed and what do you know, last to the party applying it to their models. I don't know if it's just a lethargic sense among the company or strictly apathy

If RX-F Sport was to be this:
1/ lower ride, Electronically Controlled Air Adjustable Suspension (sport, comfort Modes, or Automatic)
2/ Turbo, or Supercharged to 375 HP and 275 Torque
3/ More Sporty appearance (plus couple Unique color)
Now this will sell like a hot cake. I will immedietly Trade in my standard RX just for this.

NX was the leading name since Mazda uses CX and Lexus wasn't going to use it though it would have been ideal.... said this a long time ago

Not a chance. CT has been a major success.

I really think it goes back to what I said about complacency. Like Honda and Toyota have shown over the years, with success comes comfort. Then the competitors wise up, catch up, and suddenly you're forced into things you had put on the backburner.
