Mitsubishi mulling Mirage sedan for US
Mitsubishi is bringing the Mirage hatchback to the US this fall, carrying a price tag of $12,995, not including the $725 destination charge. Mitsunori Kitao, COO of Mitsubishi Motors Thailand Co., says that the Japanese automaker might consider releasing the sedan version of the Thailand-built compact - called the Attrage in Thailand and the Mirage G4 in the Phillipines - if the little hatchback takes off in the US market, Automotive News reports.
Weight is a key concern with importing the sedan. The non-US Mirage hatchback weighs just 1,900 pounds, but its naturally aspirated 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine makes just 79 horsepower and 78 pound-feet of torque, which can only manage a 0-62 miles-per-hour time of 11.2 seconds. The heavier sedan would take even longer.
Ryujiro Kobashi, Mitsubishi's corporate general manager in charge of North American marketing and global small-car projects, says, "US people might require more acceleration. So we are not sure if [the sedan] has marketability or not." If acceleration is a problem, Mitsubishi says it is exploring the use of a downsized turbocharged version of the engine.
The Mirage hatchback is promised to be the most fuel efficient gasoline-powered, non-hybrid car on the market if equipped with the CVT, with an EPA rating of 37 miles per gallon city, 44 mpg highway and 40 mpg combined. But Mitsubishi reportedly expects to sell only 600 Mirages per month in the US - that's just 7,200 cars per year. For comparison, in 2012, Nissan sold 113,327 Versas in the US, Automotive News reports.
Mitsubishi says dealers have responded relatively well to the Mirage, the first new US product since the i-MiEV. They reportedly have already placed 6,600 orders for the hatchback.

Consumer Reports Slams 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage
The Mitsubishi Mirage (known as the Space Star in Europe) is a car that doesn't do much justice to the Japanese brand’s tradition of performance models and competent off-roaders, but since it is on the market, the folks from Consumer Reports felt compelled to test it.
It has been a very long time since we last saw such a devastating review from CR: the Mirage is described by Tom Mutchler as the worst handling car the publication has driven in years and one that should have been on sale in the late 1980s rather than today.
He says the body leans and rolls even at slow speeds and that getting the Mirage up to highway speeds is a real challenge because of the feeble 74hp 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine.
The interior is slammed for looking drab, cheap and insubstantial. Believe it or not, Consumer Reports also found some qualities in the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage, but you’ll have to watch the video to see what those are.

Consumer Reports just tested a Mirage in its latest print-edition (I just read it this afternoon), and gave it only 29 points out of 100...the third-worst new car they have tested recently, behind the Smart-for-Two and the Scion iQ.

The Mitsubishi Mirage is currently only available as a hatchback, but all signs point towards a sedan version coming to the United States.
The Japanese automaker will show off the sedan version of the car at its U.S. headquarters for the annual Mitsubishi Owners Day this weekend, at least showing its interest in bringing the car here. Since the Mirage first launched, Mitsubishi has held the position that if there was enough interest from the U.S. market, the sedan model would come here.
“We are considering making it into a North American car but are still working on the timing of the launch,” Mitsubishi manager of product communications, Roger Yasukawa told AutoGuide.
The Mirage Sedan uses the same 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine mated to either a five-speed manual or a CVT found in the hatchback. Power numbers for the car are unknown, but it will likely be very close to the 74 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque available in the hatchback.

Did you read the CR report on the Mirage in their latest copy? I haven't seen CR pan a car that much since the Smart-for-Two and Scion iQ. Part of the problem is that I think the Smart and iQ (and possibly the Mirage as well) simply aren't suited for American driving conditions, despite the fact they they are marketed here.

Even in slow city traffic, IMO the Smart and iQ probably wouldn't provide much crash-protection in a collision with a larger vehicle (which most American-market vehicles are). These are examples of cars that, in American driving conditions, meet the letter of the safety-laws, but not necessarily the spirit. The Mirage is a little larger, and gives you a little more structure for protection, but I still wouldn't want to have any kind of real impact with it.

You know Mitsubishi is in a sad state when one of the biggest production car news coming from the LA Show is a confirmation that the Mirage sedan is heading to the States.
Don Swearingen, Mitsubishi Motors North America's executive vice president broke the…exciting news to Motor Trend on the sidelines of the show, but he didn’t provide a timeline, with the magazine speculating that it could hit dealers "within a year or two".
What we find to be one of the most hideous sedan transformations of a hatchback model, has already been presented in Asian markets as the Mitsubishi Attrage, and will also be sold as a Chrysler in Mexico and China.
Swearingen also mentioned that the upcoming facelift of the Outlander will be introduced at the New York Auto Show next April and that the smaller Outlander Sport will get an optional 2.4-liter four-pot, plus a more refined CVT and a quieter cabin for the "volume orientated" 2.0-liter model.
