Default 2016 Jaguar XE (priced from $35,895)

This mule is the first evidence Jaguar is working on a 3 Series fighter

Rumors of an entry-level, BMW 3 Series-fighting Jaguar sedan have been floating around for quite some time, but thanks to our intrepid spy photographers, we now have visible proof that such a model is, in fact, in the works.

Despite this tester's XF fittings, it's clear that what lies beneath is an entirely different beast. The doors have been shortened, roofline adjusted, rear deck lopped off and exhaust replaced, giving us a better idea of the new sedan's smaller dimensions and details. The new Jag, which may be dubbed "XS," is expected to ride on Jaguar's PLA (Premium Lightweight Architecture) platform, touting weight-saving materials that should do a lot to keep overall heft to a minimum. Both turbocharged four- and supercharged six-cylinder powertrains are expected to be on tap.

Codenamed X760, the new small sedan will reportedly hit the market in 2015.

WOW this looks very intriguing. I would definitely want this over a 3 series.

Not sure if 3 series fighter or Q50 fighter. Does the new 3series do any better than its Japanese counterparts? Well, we will have to wait until June to find out.

They should be smart enough this time to not making something like the X type. Judging from Jag's recent products, this one won't dissapoint.

Well, we do know one thing. Unlike the old X-Type, this new Jag won't (or probably won't) be a redone Ford Mondeo platform. But, even if by some slight chance, it is based on the new Mondeo, that won't be a bad thing. We're currently getting the new Mondeo here in the U.S.as the Fusion (the Euro-version has yet to be released), and that new Fusion is making quite a name for itself.

It's based on the same platform as the XJ and XF. So at least we'll know it'll be athletic. I just hope it matches the rear seat room of the current A4 and 3-series. The C-class will be getting larger to match that and will be coming out at the same time. Rear seat room is currently one of the ATS' biggest shortcomings.

Turbo 4 and Turbo 6 should probably find their way into the engine bay. Curious if the turbo 4 will be an EcoBoost mill from Ford, like the one used in the Land Rover Evoque. Cannot wait to see an R version of this bad boy. C63, M3/4, RS4, ISF, ATS-V, Jaguar **R. Segment's heating up!!

It will undoubtedly be the 4-cyl ecoboost from Ford. Hopefully they refine the engine enough to get rid of the large amount of lag compared to BMW's mill.

I need to see some interior shots of this bad boy. Although reliability freaks me out. A supercharged V6 has me giddy. Been itching for something different lately. We should probably see the XS in early 2014 as a 15 model (IMO)

Default Jaguar 3 Series fighter to be aluminum?

Jaguar 3 Series fighter to be aluminum?

Jaguar's upcoming BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class fighter that we've seen testing wearing a modified XF body is poised to use a lot of aluminum in its construction. Edmunds reports that the entry-level luxury sedan, long rumored to be called XS (or perhaps the Q-Type, according to Edmunds), will have an all-aluminum monocoque body structure, similar to the XJ, to save weight. Edmunds also reports that it will go on sale in 2014 as a 2015 model. Automotive News has a different story, and reports that a range of all-aluminum entry-level Jaguars, including the XS, a wagon and a crossover, will hit the market in 2015.

The XS will replace the long-dead X-Type, finally giving Jaguar a product in the highly competitive luxury compact sedan segment. As we've reported before, the new Jaguar is expected to be offered in the US initially with turbocharged four- and supercharged six-cylinder engines, although we have seen a diesel version testing.

In addition to the aluminum Jaguars, Jaguar Land Rover has reportedly stated that it plans to use aluminum monocoques for all upcoming Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles, and that it will invest 2.75 billion pounds ($4.22 billion) on new products and production facilities each year for the next four years.
