2013 Consumer Reports Car Brand Perception Survey
#16
Toyota/Honda at the top are expected b/c of their quality and reliability. Surprised Scion is the lowest. Doesn't Scion have the best reliability ratings the past few years?
Jaguar/Porsche that low also? A lot of haters I see lol.

might be the stupidest survey ever.
comparing 'nationwide random polled' perceptions of brands like dodge and porsche means anything?
but it might appeal to CR subscribers in their camrys, fords, and accords who look down on porsche or most 'domestics'.

Look at where Camrys and Accords are built.....and, increasing, designed. They themselves are "domestic" cars in many senses of the word.

While I share your sentiment on what can be considered a "domestic" vehicle, truth is a large chunk of the market doesn't. They believe foreign brand = profits all leave the country. Which, isn't entirely true, since as you point out, a lot of the engineering and manufacturing is done here.

Although the full ranking is unavailable unless someone with CR subscription can help post it, I've found an article with a list of the top 20:
http://autos.yahoo.com/news/2013-car...050500453.html
Brand Score
Toyota 133
Ford 118
Honda 114
Chevrolet 94
Mercedes-Benz 77
Volvo 77
Cadillac 66
BMW 66
Dodge 56
Tesla 55
Lexus 50
Subaru 50
Audi 47
GMC 45
Hyundai 43
Buick 42
Nissan 41
Smart 35
Lincoln 33
Chrysler 32
Note that Infiniti and Acura are in neither the top 20 nor the bottom 10, so they must be somehow behind Chrysler but ahead of Porsche, if that makes any sense, lol.

Modern Celicas, though, with the exception of the Celica All-Trac, which didn't last long on the American market, were all FWD. The BR-Z/FR-S, in contrast, was designed from the start to use Subaru's flat-four and RWD.

And? The Celica is a well-known, established name. The car would sell better just on the badge alone. The marketing department screwed this car.

Aside from ricer enthusiasts, nobody knows what an AE86 is and "AE86" is a chassis code for a...Corolla. 4 cylinder, affordable, Toyota coupe = Celica in the minds of the general public. Toyota could've revived one of their longest running names while also boosting the image and marketability of the car. They failed.

Oh yeah, and the Celica primarily had either the R series engines shared with the Pickups, or the S series engines shared with the Camry, including the screamer 3S-GTE in the All-trac. Only the excellent 7th Gen had the 1ZZ from the Corolla, but the GT-S had the screamer 2ZZ-GE that was also in the Elise. The Celica has a great reputation and was a very successful car at one point.
