Toyota launches redesigned Crown flagship in Japan

Hoovey,
You got me all excited with the 555 HP twin turbo talk.
I hit wiki and found a factory limited production version with a 652 HP twin turbo, the Toyota Crown VIP Majesta
Here is a link

I wonder if this car has ever been reviewed?
I also wonder if the mill in the TMG LS is the same one used in this limited production Majesta?

I can't believe some of what I've read the last 24hrs... It's sad yet hilarious.
The Crown has been around decades and still sells around 3-5k units a month. True not as well S 2 decades ago but still a huge chunk. It's also a nameplate around for decades, you don't just drop that kind of heritage off. The Crown is like the eclass of Japan, used from executives to taxi fleets.
Now I do think the grill is ridiculous and just whack. Period. But I give credit for a pink roll out by the CEO himself, pretty damn risky!!
The same way Acuras did and that accord plug in

Still a somewhat strange grille, but it does give the new Crown presence.

Two rappers come to mind who love pink Cameron AKA Killa Cam & Nicki Minaj ( for my hip hop heads they know them) who be interested. LOL!
Anyway I like it the new Crown and the brass pair of the CEO to think outside the box and be progressive instead of playing it safe. Which a lot of people beat up Toyota about for years saying they are too condervitive, he is just spicing things up for the Crown to get the ineterest back from buyers looking at other brands, it just might pay off!

just as example why it is good to design different cars for different markets, even if they look a bit crazy to us :-)
Crown series orders after 1 month are 25,000. 16500 out of which are hybrid, and 14000 being wilder Athlete series :-). Expected monthly volume is/was 4000.
25k in a month is a lot for Crown, as they are pretty expensive... Brands like BMW/Lexus/MB sell overall 40k-60k for full year, all of models combined.
And this is without Crown Majesta and Crown taxi included. 4000 is nice goal too, it is not downplayed.
It is certainly combination of good looks (!) and new hybrid powertrain that will go into a lot of Lexus cars too.

Its a smaller market. I want to say Lexus is #1 in Japan now passing Audi.... or its #2.. a far cry from 2006.

Lexus (42,365 sold) did outsell BMW (34,195 sold), Mercedes (33,212 sold) and Audi (21,166 sold) in 2012 in Japan too though, despite competition from the Crown.

IS300h and GS300h and possibly RX300h might do wonders for Japanese (well ALL non-USA) sales.
As to other brands in Japan, it is BMW that is battling with Lexus, Mercedes being distant 3rd, and Audi being a half smaller than Mercedes. Hard to say BMW vs Lexus, they are about similar, in their PR BMW counts Mini together with BMW.

Its a win-win for Toyota.

Right.. basically all the GS-based Toyotas compete directly with Lexus.
Not sure if it's a win-win as far as building the Lexus brand in Japan goes though. IMHO the Crown really hinders the growth of Lexus in Japan but the Toyota management must be too afraid of the short-term sales drop to let go of the Crown series.
