Saw this upclose at the NYIAS. Pretty damn nice car. And for them to say starting just under $30k (which I took to mean $29,999 stripped, likely $35k with necessary options) it will be a huge success in its segment. And talk about cheap entry into the AMG club. Wow. Good going MB.

The CLA45 really caught my eyes. $48k MSRP with 355HP and 330 torque. 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. 4WD. estimated 34 MPG.
Pretty much meets all the criteria I am looking for in a car. Anyone else keeping an eye on the new CLA45?

34 MPG what? Is this some conversion from Euro numbers or something?

Can't believe thye put the gas cap on the left hand side on this one, all mercedes except a/b have their gas cap on the right hand side so basically all us bound benz have it on the same side until now.
Filling up at a gas station in my benz I've never had to guess which side it's suppose to be on and I am predicting a lot of cla owner might have to do a little going around to the other side at the station.

Keep in mind it is not full time AWD. For the most part, it is FWD. What I'm keeping an eye out is what MB is planning to do with the next gen C63, what engine they are planning to swap the 6.2L out for. I only wished they would keep using that thing until I can afford one. Unless of course they figure out how to put lions into V6s/other V8s into the next gen C63. That 6.2L engine is acoustically a monster!

Mercedes claims combined cycle fuel economy of 34.1 mpg on the European test cycle, which typically delivers higher numbers than the U.S. test.
From my understanding, MB made all 4Matic to be full AWD. Where did you read that it is mostly FWD?
I was actually considering the c63 for my next car. But I couldn't get pass the 13MPG. That is just terrible for a DD.

The A, B and CLA Classes use a Haldex-type system, which is a 100% front torque default, with some of the power being transferable to the rear if the front wheels start to slip. Haldex systems have undersized drivetrain components on the axle that normally gets zero drive - they are not designed for full time use.
Haldex systems are not generally thought of as being well suited for high performance applications, which makes the particular application in the case of the AMG version something of a curiosity to me.
I would not bother with the 4MATIC in the regular CLA 250 (or B Class for that matter), for the reasons above, plus the increased complexity, weight and fuel economy penalty."

Lead Lap
Indeed. Looks like AMG didn't mix that problem until mid-2010 with a revised bolt design.

12000mi a year at 13mpg is 923 gallons
12000mi a year at 20mpg is 600 gallons
that's 323 gallons difference, even at $5/gallon that's only $1600/yr ($30/week) difference to drive a beast vs. a boring car.
