Scion xB death sentence uncertain, minor updates announced
The last time we discussed the Scion xB and xD, in April of this year, it was to announce a report that both models were being killed. The vice president of the brand had said, "We don't have plans for a direct xB or xD replacement," but no date was given for the termination. Turns out rumors of their deaths have been greatly exaggerated: as part of a Toyota press release that summarized feature and pricing changes for 2013, the Scion xB was included.
The 2013 hatchback (above) gets a new front bumper and lower fascia with LED lighting, and the rear end gets a black diffuser. Stingray Metallic and Elusive Blue Metallic exterior hues will disappear, Absolutely Red and Nautical Blue Metallic will take their places. Inside will be light bronze metallic and chrome accents, as well as new seat fabric and the availability of the BeSpoke Premium Audio. It increases in price by $500, the manual costing $16,800, the automatic $17,750.
The xD (inset) has been left off the list and the Scion website it still hawking the 2012 car. But 2013 xD pricing and new features were announced earlier this year, the MSRP rising by $125 to $16,500. New equipment and options includes smoked headlight covers, more airbags and a two-tone paint job.

Loved the first gen XB. Hate the new one, its too frumpy. It seems Scion gets a few models then neglects them and tries something else after it's too late. Shame they haven't established themselves better. They are supposed to be cars that people want to buy

It would be nice to see Toyota kill off the Scion brand entirely. The FR-S deserves better than to be branded as a Scion. The TC could slide in nicely next to the Corolla, the iQ is a DOA joke, the XA *** XD just deserves a quick death since there is so much other competition in the segment and the XB has lost all of the appeal and should only survive if they gut the powertrain and essentially turn it into a mini-ute prius. In the coming years there will be a real challenge defending the viability of a "brand" that legitimately only has 2 viable vehicles.

All Scions are sold as Toyota's in Japan... so I bet they will get new models, as Toyota has some 40 models on sale in Japan...

Scion Keeps xB Alive with Electric Quartz Release Series 10.0
Gone are the days when the Scion xB was setting trends with its box-shaped body in the small car segment. Now, with the second generation approaching its eighth year in the market, it looks like a relic from another time. Scion's answer to this problem is yet another Release Series edition that will debut at the New York motor show.
The Japanese firm will produce 1,500 examples of the new xB RS 10.0, all of which will be finished in a special pearl white paint with subtle green highlights dubbed 'Electric Quart', while the hub caps (yes, they still make those) are presented in a Tungsten Gray color.
The green accent theme continues inside on the custom colored seats and door inserts, while Scion tries to impress the digital-obsessed audience with some tacky LED projections of the Scion logo from the rear bumper to the ground, the "xB RS 10.0" on the driver's side carpet and the sequential number of the specific vehicle on the passenger side foot well.
Other highlights include piano black accents on the center console, steering wheel and vent rings, illuminated door sills and cup holders, a standard backup camera and a wireless conductive charging mat for cell phones.
The xB RS 10.0 goes on sale in the U.S. this summer with a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $20,420, excluding a processing and handling (DPH) fee of $755.

^I like the color of the new one, that 'Electric Quartz' color looks nice.
But I agree, they seem to make the same mistake Lexus did with the transition from the original SC to the SC430. The original xB was quirky and from what I'm aware got fairly decent mpg and had plenty of headroom. The new one grew, lost mpg, and doesn't have that boxy fun factor anymore.

Many other non-Scion dealerships have (technically) followed suit simply with their Internet/No-Haggle price-discounts, which, though not always publicized, are often available if you ask for them.

They just needed to address the first gen Xb's design flaws like the spontaneous windshield cracking, to perfect a tried design/powertrain combo. 1.5 lt engine produced enough power for the average driver and stelllar mpg . Too bad Toyota caved in to Pressures.

A simple way of keeping the cost down. Plus, for those who often scratch or damage wheels/tires by curbing them, plastic covers are a LOT cheaper to replace. In fact, if you are willing to settle for something other than the design of the original factory ones, you can get replacement ones maybe $10-12 apiece at some discount auto parts shops.

But xB has aged poorly... it would be better if they just used Japanese cars without trying to figure out whats best for USA and adjust them for local sales... like original xB.
