While the public mistakenly presumes that this federal agency is hard at work conducting complicated tests on every new model of truck, van, car, and SUV, in reality, just 18 of the EPA’s 17,000 employees work in the automobile-testing department in Ann Arbor, Michigan, examining 200 to 250 vehicles a year, or roughly 15 percent of new models. As to that other 85 percent, the EPA takes automakers at their word—without any testing—accepting submitted results as accurate.

That graph plainly shows the strong effect of higher speeds in reducing economy, even with efficient cars like these. All the more reason to cruise at moderate speeds and (reasonably) keep near the limits.

yeah, it also shows C-Max doing much worse than Prius v while it should get 7 MPG more.

Below is a screenshot for the actual mpg in the Prius over the past 12 months. I am not a hyper-miler and tend to have a heavy foot. If the Ford C-max was able to get these sort of numbers I'd be all over it as I like the look of the Ford better.
Until then Toyota still sets the mark.

100% agree. I have an 06 Prius and the difference between mpg at 55 mph vs 65 mph is significant especially with lower tq. I saw an article comparing the Jetta TDi vs the Prius and the TDi won the mpg test for highway, but the speed was set to 65 where the tq of the TDi I believe made all the difference. Obviously to achieve best mpg would be to drive 55 mph.
I had an 08 and 10 Prius and on my 27 mile (one way) route to work I could take streets where my average speed was 51mph, (speed limit was 45).....it would yield crazy MPG....60+ (even with 17s on the '10).

so you're driving 100 miles...one drivier is going 55 and the other 65...
Driver A: Time = 100 miles / 55 mph = 1.81 hours = 108 minutes
Driver B: Time = 100 miles / 65 mph = 1.54 hours = 92 minutes
so you save yourself a whopping 15 mins
......driving in general is a joke, anything over 2 hrs drive time I ALWAYS FLY [@ 600mph !!!!!] if your time is that valuable 600 mph will get your there much faster!!!!
....or you could settle for a mere 300mph...
