In comparison I took my dad for his birthday to a race day event and drove the 458 and Gallardo. Both are tingling. We also got an invite from a local Ferrari dealer and we drove the California - not everyones favorite, but that aural excitment is nothing short of breathtaking. In the GT-R I kept looking at the window switches pulled from the Altima. Not so special
Yes exactly, no warm and fuzzy feeling, always feels like is missing something, is a little cold.

When I was young, I thought power and acceleration is everything, so I kept going after it, owned a 500 hp GTR and a 350 hp WRX STi, both are fun to drive, but got boring quickly, so I tried other people's car.............500 hp STi, 550 EVO, 600 hp RX7, 650 hp Supra, 700 hp GTR, 800 hp GTR, 1000 hp Mustang, 1000 hp GTR......... they pulls harder and harder as the power goes up, but still there is something that is missing to complete the experience. It just goes from pulling hard to scary, it never had that WOW this is fun feeling.

Then I started driving Ferrari as the used ones are getting cheaper, 355, 360, 430, FF.................then recently a 458 with a loud exhaust, THAT IS IT, the total package. The sounds combine with enough hp makes it the total package, I was giggling with happiness and pleasure uncontrollably. I never got that feeling from a 1000 hp GTR, it was just "damn this thing pull so hard, it is scary, I better not crash it". In the 458........."this is so much fun!!"

Mind you I drive the 458 recently when I am really jaded with cars now. The 1000 hp GTR drive was 10 years ago when I was still exploring with cars.

It's funny hybrid haters now are jumping on the bandwagon . I'm sure it will be pretty sick and maybe theja should change the name since it has nothing in common with the superb first generation.

Also seems the head engineer is German and we know it will be built here and I guess it will be sold in Japan as a Honda?

I am not hating on the hybrid part, in fact I love electric propulsion, electric power is absolutely awesome........aka LaFerrari, 918, P1......LS600hL, P85+. I just hate the low cylinder count V6 part.

If this NSX have a 9k rpm V8 with 3 electric motors, I would definitely seriously consider owning one.

Uh, you don't know that. Honda has usually been the more driver focused company in their sports cars. Even their front drive cars have "emotional" inducing qualities. The NSX will be mid engined for one. Will be part time 4wd. Will have a hybrid powertrain etc. Its not "just like the gtr".

to be fair, i think it can take a very long time for a company to design and build something from completely ground up and that's fine. i rather they take time to do it right, like the lfa. now if honda spent 10 years and the nsx comes out but not much of a driving machine? that would be a huge let down
The LFA took that long b/c its considered one of the finest road cars ever built and a worlds first carbon fiber machine (machinery) was created for the car and all the other details surely you know of. The LFA is a super exotic, the new NSX is not.

Honestly the two should not even be compared, apples to oranges.

The LFA was always going to be a V-10 and as we know switched from aluminum to carbon fiber 5 years in development. The NSX was a AWD V-10 and now seems to use the same 3.5 liter V-6 in the RLX/MDX but with a hybrid AWD drivetrain.

The LFA is a pure sports car which Jeremy Clarkson claims is the best he ever drove and the Ferrari F12 only can match it overall. The NSX is a new age sports car with tons of electronics and AWD so it will be a different driving experience but surely it should be good.

What will be of interest is the LF-LC which will be a 500hp or so V-8 hybrid which might do battle somewhat with the V-6 hybrid AWD NSX.

And being annihilated by GT-R in performance category. People still compare GT-R to LFA, why not new NSX?

Looks like they borrowed the wheels from the Accord Plug-In. *sigh*

After numerous teases in the form of renderings and styling bucks, Acura has finally released some key technical details on the upcoming NSX revival, and they're big changes.

In the biggest shocker, Acura reconfigured the drivetrain from the original NSX's transverse layout to a longitudinal layout, like a Ferrari 458. Honda R&D executives tell us the switch was made about a year ago after it was decided the transverse arrangement wouldn't give the car the driving experience the company wanted.

The original plan had been to essentially reorient the Acura RLX Sport Hybrid's drivetrain and add turbochargers. This would move the V-6 engine and transverse transmission with an integrated electric motor to the rear of the car and the 2 other electric motors to the front. Doing so would save money by using common parts. Apparently, the savings weren't worth it. Instead, Honda is throwing what must be an enormous amount of money at this car to make it the best it can be.

The new NSX drivetrain retains front-mounted electric motors driving the front wheels independently of 1 another, as well as a 3rd electric motor integrated in the all-new, Honda-developed transaxle. It's a dual-clutch unit, though Acura won't confirm the number of gears, saying only that it will have "more than 6." The RLX Sport Hybrid, for comparison, uses a new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, and Honda is developing a new 8-speed dual-clutch for cars such as the Accord, though neither is necessarily an indicator of what this all-new transmission will employ. Those same Honda R&D executives tell us the only external change necessary to accommodate the new drivetrain layout was the slight lengthening of the rear end to provide more room for crash structure to protect the drivetrain.

Providing power to this new transmission is an all-new V-6 engine about which we were told little. Engineers at the presentation would only say that it is a clean-sheet design and that it will displace "no more than 3.5 liters." We gleaned a few more details by taking a close look. For starters, this is a wide-angle V-6, not a 60-degree V like other Honda V-6s. It looks to be a 90-degree V-angle, but might be slightly narrower. It features direct injection and has no oil sump -- an engineer it will have a dry-sump oil system. To save weight, every bit of this new engine appears to be cast from the absolute minimum amount of metal needed to get the job done.

The new engine is fed by 2 turbochargers, 1 hanging off each bank. From the angle of the compressor outlets and the twin throttle bodies mounted on the tall plenum, it appears that the intercoolers will be mounted up high on top of the engine. And it appears that the scoops just behind the doors and below the quarter-windows are functional and will feed these 2 intercoolers, with hot air exiting through vents in the deck lid flanking the rear window.

The battery, of unknown size and composition, will sit transversely ahead of the engine and behind the seats. Power will be distributed through a module in the tunnel between the seats and sent to or received from the front and rear electric motors. According to video simulations shown by Acura, the NSX will be able to drive under full electric power in the city, but will be effectively front-wheel drive in that scenario, with only the front electric motors powered and the rear drivetrain shut down. Under harder driving, power will come from all 3 electric motors as well as the gasoline engine.

Acura has so far refused to announce power figures, part of a calculated strategy that speaks to the company's philosophy on this car. Rather than let the Internet shred the spec chart and make all sorts of numbers-only comparisons, Acura wants people to hear about how the car drives and feels first, then look at the numbers. As such, don't expect much in the way of hard numbers before the car's production debut. Still, we know this much: The new RLX Sport Hybrid claims 310 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque from its naturally aspirated V-6, and when combined with its 3 electric motors, the total drivetrain output is 377 horsepower and an unspecified amount of torque. The RLX uses 2 27-kW independent electric motors in the rear and a 35-kW electric motor embedded in the transmission. At the bare minimum, we're certain the NSX will make more total power from its new turbocharged engine and potentially upgraded electric motors. The Ferrari 458, for what it's worth, makes 557 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque.

The NSX's party trick, though, will be its ability to use regenerative braking with the electric motors to increase performance and handling. Using technology from the RLX Sport Hybrid, the NSX will use its electric motors to drag on certain wheels when cornering in a form of electronic torque vectoring. The independent front electric motors will be able to apply a small amount of regenerative braking to the inside wheel when cornering, slowing it down and changing the car's inertia while simultaneously accelerating the outside wheel to help steer it around the corner. Because the rear drivetrain uses only a single electric motor powering both rear wheels, it will only be able to apply regenerative braking and not the torque vectoring effect, though it's possible Acura could use the rear brakes or differential to achieve the same effect.

We're told Acura's benchmark in developing the new NSX is the vaunted Ferrari 458 Italia, with Acura hoping to provide a comparable or better driving experience for less money (911 prices, it says) and with more technology. The high-tech powertrain will be augmented by a surprisingly low curb weight that 1 engineer suggested was targeted at 2200 pounds, though he quickly stopped talking after that. We don't know much about the NSX's body and frame construction yet, but Honda confirmed it will be an aluminum monocoque. The Ferrari, by way of comparison, weighs a shade less than 3450 pounds.

Acura has also declined to offer details on the NSX's suspension, but we expect a fully independent design. Some kind of active damping system is also likely, possibly the variable rate dampers currently employed on the RLX and MDX.

Despite the massive changes to the design and engineering of the car, Honda officials insist that the NSX will be completed in 2015. We're told the 1st drivable prototype with the new drivetrain only hit the pavement a month ago, so engineers are likely working around the clock to keep the development on schedule. We've also learned that Honda Performance Development, which just recently began working on street applications in addition to racing, is working with the NSX team on a special high-performance model. If Honda's game plan so far is any indication, we'll likely see more information on the car released in small doses as the premiere nears.

Default Honda Confirms VTEC Twin-Turbo V6 for New 2015 Acura NSX

Click here to view more photos

While we were originally led to believe that, the next generation NSX would utilize a naturally aspirated V6 mated to the brand's latest three electric motor Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) system, it turns out the hybrid sports car's main source of power will be a turbocharged unit.

It only makes sense that the company's top offering and the halo car for both the Honda and Acura brands (depending on the region it will be marketed with one or the other nameplate) would use a turbocharged engine after Monday's announcement for the development of a new line of VTEC Turbo gasoline units for the automaker's mainstream global cars.

According to Edmunds, Honda showed a mockup of the new NSX powertrain during a media event before the Tokyo Motor Show, which included an unspecified V6 twin-turbo engine mounted in the center and linked to the SH-AWD system that uses a three-motor (one for each front wheel and a third one integrated into the engine acting as a motor generator) hybrid system.

Completing the powertrain setup is a new dual-clutch transmission. Autonews reported that Honda officials said they "have not yet decided how many gears it would have".

Taking into consideration the twin-turbo V6 and the electric motor, the new NSX should come with some serious grunt under the hood. How much, remains a mystery, but as pointed out by Edmunds, a 500 plus hp output sounds completely feasible…

The new NSX will be manufactured at Honda's Ohio plant with sales to begin in 2015.

Default 2016 Acura NSX Remaining True To Its Roots And Aiming For The Ferrari 458

The Acura NSX is widely regarded as one of the finest handling and fun-to-drive sports cars of the bygone era. Acura is the last brand that comes to mind when it comes to mid-engine, purpose-built sports cars, but that’s what it did back in the 90s, and it took the world by surprise.

Until then, Acura, and its parent Honda, were attributed to affordable, reliable and economical modes of transportation for the masses. Then, they rolled out the NSX with a mid-mounted, V-6 and close to 300 horsepower. Now, the car maker plans to launch a replacement for the legendary NSX and promises not to disappoint.

The production of the NSX ceased back in 2005, and it left a long legacy behind. Building on the legacy of legendary sports car is no easy feat. And that’s exactly what Honda and Acura engineers are faced with when it comes to the new NSX.

Little has come out in the public as far as the development of the 2016 NSX is concerned. That said, those at the helm of the project have their sights set firmly on some of the biggest names in the business. Ferrari , Porsche , Nissan and Audi already have cars that are competing with each other on the global scene, and Acura is shooting to offer all the qualities of a Ferrari 458 at a highly competitive price tag.

Ted Klaus, the person in charge of the development Acura NSX, was talking to Autocar recently, and he said “The NSX has never been about a set of figures on a piece of paper,” he said. “As with the original, the eventual power figure won’t grab headlines, for instance, but the qualities that you can’t write down, such as driver involvement and pleasure, are the ones that will matter."

"As engineers, we like numbers, but I’m acutely aware that if we build this car against a set of criteria that has been written down, we will lose our sense of focus.”
