Default 'Toyota Wins (it's 1st) FIA WEC race in Brazil!

Toyota's TS030 Hybrid LMP1 takes the checkered flag in first position at the 6hr of Sao Paulo at Interlagos!
More on the story at Toyota Hybrid Racing's official page here http://www.toyotahybridracing.com/vi...toyota-racing/

Here are the driver quotes after the race http://www.toyotahybridracing.com/qu...ter-first-win/

Some pictures of the car-

Toyota took pole position over the Audi R18's (hybrid and Ultra) and led most of the race. They at one point lapped the entire field, including the two Audi R18 LMP1's. Their margin of victory was over 1 minute from the 2nd place Audi R18 E-Tron hybrid.

In only their 3rd race might I add, against the might of Audi who've won LeMans for 10 out of the last 12 years.

LeMans would have been better if there was those accidents

Anyways congrats Toyota!

What is even more fascinating is that Toyota's gas hybrid won against Audi's diesel hybrid under regulations that clearly favour the diesels.
Currently, the restrictions of engine size are 3.7L for turbo diesels and 3.4L for N/A gas or 2.0L for FI-gas engines.
Toyota had to do one more pit stop that Audi due to worse fuel consumption and still won, but imagine they didn't have to if they were allowed to have 4.0L Atkinson cycle engine with power similar to the power of 3.4L but 15% better fuel efficiency.

Not sure how can you implement Atkinson cycle on a racing engine but with smart engineers behing their backs anything is possible.

Anyway awesome race! Didn't watch it whole only the start but you could tell if everything goes good Toyo would take it.

I think this goes to show that Toyota/Lexus is serious about incorporating hybrids into even their sportiest offerings and wins like these only goes to show that sporty hybrids are viable with no compromise to sportiness.

They use a supercapacitor for their hybrid system. This is an evolution of the system found on the Supra HV-R race car that won the 24hours of Tokachi. It stores 500kj (limited) of energy that can be released after certain braking zones on the tracks. That equals about 300hp for 2.5 seconds- on top of the ~550hp from the petrol engine. Toyota say their supercapacitor can store 8MJ of energy (more than 10,000hp total or about 300hp for a good 30 seconds) but the ACO/FIA stipulate a 500kj limit of energy release.

The mind boggles.....

it is good for the perception of hybrids - most people think they are too slow.

If you're interested, you can follow the races live on http://www.fiawec.com. Next round is Bahrain, that takes place on the weekend of the 27th and 28th of this month. Toyota feels their car will be even better suited to this track! May be looking at another Toyota win in about two weeks time.
